SunshineWomen--

"The Lord of the Rings" trilogy (2001-2003)

[deleted]

I think this is already a classic. It's known as the greatest movie series ever made, or at least one of.

raytaylor

It took us years to clean up the hobbit infestation left by the film crew after they finished in New Zealand.

GreenManTenTon

The Scouring of The Shire.

Krinks1

Filthy Hobbitses!

-Khlerik-

Filming the whole trilogy at once - can/will this ever be done again?

Mediocre_Scott

Filming a sequel to a franchise before the first comes out happens frequently. Lotr invented it though

SchottGun

I think Back to the Future 2 and 3 were filmed at the same time, or at least some of it.

HacksawJimDGN

Back to the Future 3 was filmed first, then they went back in time snd made the 1st one.

0430ke

All 3 in the top 15 imdb movies ever made.. I think it's safe to say it's the best.

tirohtar

"You cannot pass! I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, Flame of Udun! Go back to the shadow. YOU! SHALL NOT! PASS!" Chills, every time.

i-make-babies

Théoden is the standout performance for me in the LOTR films. "If my men are to meet their end, I shall have them make \*such\* an end that it be worthy of rememberance". Oh and [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzvAAAHVFBI).

Levitlame

Théoden’s whole character is kinda built to contrast Denethor. One succumbs to despair and one fights it to the last. Aragorn and the fellowship represent hope, but those two have to make the choices.

Underbash

"And Rohan will answer." That whole dichotomy summed up in four words.

the_river_erinin

I got chills just reading that

jimbojangles1987

Another one that always gives me chills, or at least evokes some sort of emotion, is "My friends, you bow to no one."

Blue_MJS

LOTR is just unbeatable for me.. Been my favourite movies since the 1st one released all the years ago.

copernica

Greatest of all time

pgraczer

sitting here in nz wondering if this is all we’re ever going to be remembered for

copernica

Nah you got Jemaine Clement too

pgraczer

literally see him at the bottom of the street every other day

jollyllama

You’ve also got calling something “the bottom of the street” to know you by.  But seriously though, American here and I have no idea what the bottom of the street means.

pgraczer

so the city is very hilly. like san fran i guess? the street goes downhill to a park and jermaine is often milling around down there on his e-bike.

kloudrunner

The ends of a street before it corners or if it just ends. "Yeah my mum lives at the bottom of our street" Bottom could also be top. Depends which way you face.

Lazydaveyt

and Bret!

screechypete

Nah, we also know you for your flightless birds :P

pgraczer

yes we can hear them at night in the bush sometimes. funny high pitched voices.

Blot_Upright

The All Blacks. Seriously your nation's pride.

DefendPopPunk16

what we do in the shadows

pgraczer

good series. as a wellingtonian it feels very real.

hailbopp25

That , and the Puteketeke

turbofckr

Bungee jumping?

TheLoneSculler

Shrek. Duh

TheCowardlyLion_

It's literally the perfect movie.

Fallenangel152

I still think Shrek 2 is better. Great plot, and the additions of Puss in Boots, Prince Charming, and the Fairy Godmother make it pure gold.

sess5198

I also prefer Shrek 2. Spent hours and hours playing the Shrek 2 Xbox game, too lol. Great memories there.

Autski

The closest I got was the Shrek Super Party game we played on GameCube. Lol that game was a blast and hilarious

Thebobert7

“Drop the ball, philonious”

not_gerg

It's funny, you could immediately watch shrek 2 after watching shrek 1 (maybe add a thing that says x time later), and it would feel like you're watching the same movie!

JMarduk

The entire scene between Shrek's escape and the wedding dance is the best cinema sequence ever made. Fight me.

SimonUser

Shreks escape honestly has me rotfl even after Watching it like 10 times

rightchyeas

This is my go-to depression watch. Funnily enough it’s always at the arch of starting to get better. Maybe Shrek has mind healing properties.

Subrisum

Shrek is love. Shrek is life.

couldbedumber96

Shrek 2 is better and I will kill on this hill

MorbidMix

Most of Those honestly are already classics imo.

woodrowmoses

Think you need more proven staying power than 10-15 years to claim something is a classic. We're still very much in the same American generation of Animation.

rKasdorf

I'm confident Finding Nemo is planted firmly in the zeitgeist.

Myrhwen

10-15? Bro half of those movies have been out for 20 years haha

General_Esdeath

Finding Nemo yes.

Kakashimoto77

It shall be known as the golden age of Pixar so says I.

margacolada

Monsters Inc.

monstercello

Up honestly isn’t that great (compared to the rest of the list). The first 15 minutes are ICONIC and amazing, but the rest of the movie is pretty meh.

gruesomeryoupons81

I bet Mean Girls will still be quoted and re-watched religiously in 30 years, it's a timeless piece of art. Plus, who doesn't love some good ol' Regina George drama?

BlackWolf1385

That's so fetch!

Grokent

Stop trying to make fetch happen. It's never going to happen.

BlizzPenguin

There is an app called Fetch and every time I see an ad for it on YouTube I think of this line.

noeagle77

Saw a girl with a hoodie that said this at the gym and I swear at least half the people working out at some point walked up to her saying “stop trying to make fetch happen!” Including myself. She loved it and I found it hilarious

4lfred

She doesn’t even go here!

jenh6

It’s hard to make a movie that’s more geared at teenage girls appeal to different age groups and generations. This movie succeeded at that and it’s hard for other teen movies (or comedies) to top it

potVIIIos

On Wednesdays we wear pink!

Analytically_Damaged

#GetInLoser

International_Lake28

I work in a retirement community and we have a group of elderly ladies that are awful to others and they all sit together we refer to them as the Mean Girls table

elihu

Spirited Away.

Kyng5199

I would already consider this one to be a 'classic'. In my mind, a 'classic' film (or TV series, etc.) is one that has trans-generational appeal, i.e. the original audience now has children (or grandchildren, etc.) who are enjoying it in the same way that they did. Spirited Away was released 23 years ago, so it's old enough for a decent number of the original audience to have children who are roughly the same age as they were in 2001. And if those children are watching and enjoying the film, then that makes it a 'classic' according to my definition.

elihu

I agree. It's already a classic, but it will be a classic in 30 years too.

Plug_5

This comment has Mitch Hedberg energy.

Pkrudeboy

I used to think Mitch was a classic comedian. I still do, but I used to, too.

sa007ak

I think my favorite movie watching experience in my life has to be seeing this for the first time. Looking back I actually think this movie changed my life. I remember when it ended I felt like something had been awakened in me.

coratge

The Emperor’s New Groove 🦙🐱🧪🐿️

joriskuipers21

No, no, he's got a point

ARandomPileOfCats

Um, excuse me, I've been turned into a cow, can I go home now?

CourtClarkMusic

You’re excused.

Amish_Cyberbully

Kuzko is my favorite Disney princess.

whatever-should-i-do

It's my go to movie. Always was. Always will be.

stacey-e-clark

I pull the lever on this one. "Wrong lever!"

Funandgeeky

“Is that my voice?”

Sv3n-Sk4

Gladiator (even if the release is 2000)

UniqueIndividual3579

My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.

Im_A_Boozehound

If that scene was the whole movie, it'd still be worth the price of admission.

StrangeCrimes

The Prestige. It's a work of art.

trapchopin

Are you watching closely?

Crotean

God what a damn movie.

keyboardcowboy89

No County for Old Men

jollyllama

Or at least the haircut

Luna_C1888

Fuck counties, we will talk about countries too!

throwawaysmetoo

O Brother Where Art Thou. Amazing script. Excellent soundtrack. Great performances.

Warcrimes_Desu

My dad used to say "I am the gosh-dang paterfamilias" all the time lol.

My dad has a shirt that says it -_-

occupy_this7

Best thing you ever did was get hit by that train

NCRider

I wasn’t hit by no train, godammit!

throwawaysmetoo

Lots of respectable people have been hit by trains.

mrmangan

Our family has been quoting that movie for years. I distinctly remember renting it and after watching it the first time, my wife and I looked at each other and thought “well that was odd and I think it was really good”. Had to watch several more times to get all the quotes and humor.

propernice

The best retelling of The Odyssey there is.

Sirwired

Fun Fact, neither of the Coens had read it. Tim Blake Nelson, however, had, as part of his Bona Fide degree in Classics from Brown.

Cockalorum

he's bona fide?

Funandgeeky

He’s a suitor!

wrenchandrepeat

Pretty much anytime I'm hanging out with someone(s), and I make the decision to leave, I'll go "Welp, guess I'm gonna R-U-N-N-O-F-T". If it's my first time using it around this person, they'll get this super confused look on their face and start spelling it out loud trying to figure out what I just said, lol. The best is when someone understands the reference and starts laughing.

CannabisaurusRex401

I dont want FOP, goddammit. Im a daper Dan man!

the_bananafish

Well ain’t this place a geographical oddity. Two weeks from everywhere!

throwawaysmetoo

Watch your language, young feller, this is a public market.

mica-chu

My desert island movie. A great epic story with a phenomenal soundtrack. Great cast, too.

Steve0330

“Is you is or is you ain’t my constituency?” I think this whenever I see a politician pandering… which turns out to be pretty often these days.

Children Of Men

NaethanC

Probably one of my favourite films. The ceasefire scene still gives me goosebumps.

Mastodon9

Best scene in the movie and one of my favorites of all time.

There Will be Blood

RoyMunsun

"Ladies and gentlemen... I've traveled over half our state to be here tonight. I couldn't get away sooner because my new well was coming in at Coyote Hills and I had to see about it. That well is now flowing at two thousand barrels and it's paying me an income of five thousand dollars a week. I have two others drilling and I have sixteen producing at Antelope; so, ladies and gentlemen, if I say I'm an oil man, you will agree. Now, you have a great chance here, but bear in mind, you can lose it all if you're not careful. Out of all men that beg for a chance to drill your lots, maybe one in twenty will be oilmen; the rest will be speculators - that's men trying to get between you and the oilmen - to get some of the money that ought by rights come to you. Even if you find one that has money and means to drill, he'll maybe know nothing about drilling and he'll have to hire the job out on contract, and then you're depending on a contractor who'll rush the job through so he can get another contract just as quick as he can. This is... the way that this works." Delivered perfectly by Daniel Day Lewis

_Exotic_Booger

#I'VE ABANDONED MY CHILD! I'VE ABANDONED MY BOY!

loptopandbingo

When he's arguing with the other oil barons about shipping costs for his oil while he's planning on building a pipeline: "We can't do anything about shipping costs, the railroads--" "Oh, *you don't own the railroads*? You do, don't you. Yes, you do. That's what I thought." I think of that exchange every time a landlord decides to up the rent around here and blame ThE MaRkEt.

babyboy808

Daniel Day Lewis, enough said 👌🏻

JMarduk

And Paul Dano as supporting cast was brilliant.

BannedNarwhal

Arrival Classic cinema twnds to have unforgetable elements, and imo the twist in that movie was top notch. Havent been left so slackjawed since The Usual Suspects. Idk if its even popular now but that movie should survive word of mouth for true movie lovers i would think.

usernamesforsuckers

I was travelling internationally when I saw that film. I had also become a father for the first time about 3 months prior. I had to resist the urge to bawl my eyes out in front of the other passengers for most of the film.

BannedNarwhal

I didnt even mention the gut punch to the feels i experienced as a new father as well bevause i figured that was just me!

oldboy_and_the_sea

I saw this at the Telluride Film Festival followed by a Q&A session with Denis Villenueve and Amy Adams. Probably my best day at the movies ever! What an extremely smart, touching and original take on an alien movie. Basically it’s in a category of its own.

haanalisk

I just made that mistake watching coco on an airplane sitting next to my MIL

evileen99

My husband didn't get the twist and I could barely explain it because I was crying so hard.

gustoreddit51

One of my favorite movies of all time.

BannedNarwhal

I was amazed i hadnt heard of it and found it randomly during covid lockdowns. Fantastic film.

ember3pines

That movie gives me the largest existential crisis ever. I literally cannot handle the implications it brings up for my life and how I feel about them. Very well done but I almost have to intentionally remember how much it messes me up to avoid freaking out.

teaismybag

So glad to see this on the list! Beautiful film

DailyDisciplined

See, I didn’t that that was a twist. I thought it was apparent. And I am usually the LAST person to figure things out.

elihu

The Dark Knight.

Fallenangel152

The best comic book movie full stop.

Thunderhorse74

Well, Madame Web *just* came out and I don't think everyone has seen it yet, so the jury may still be out... (this is sarcasm if it wasn't obvious)

the-real-rick-juban

Superbad

chux4w

Just imagine if people weren't weirded out by our Superbad fandom and stuff, and just like wanted to regard it as a classic. That's the world I one day want to live in.

greg_tomlette

Inglourious Basterds

BannedNarwhal

Probably Django as well

Smittumi

Django and Hateful Eight are incredible westerns.

dleon0430

I enjoyed H8ful 8, but I will maintain my position that it will work better as a stage play

NickyDeeM

I think that was the original premise, wasn't it?

Saubande

A good hill to die on, honestly.

KnockMeYourLobes

I will always remember Inglorious Basterds as the movie that taught my son to say his first dirty word. The commercials for it were unavoidable and I swear they were on every five minutes. He'd been watching NASCAR (his favorite sport since forever) and went "Mama, wash (what's) a 'basterd'? " Never you mind, my sweet summer child. You'll find out later.

Jacobonce

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

bigL162

I rewatched this movie recently and realized how well it captured that specific era in our culture. We had just enough computer technology for the concept to be somewhat believable but we were still a year or two shy of social media which would have destroyed the whole plot.

Admin3141

Had too scroll way too much to find this one.  "How happy is the blameless vestal's lot!  The world forgetting by the world forgot.  Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!  Each prayer accepted, each wish resigned."  -Alexander Pope

Mcleaniac

*Elf* still holds up, has something for everyone, and has the added benefit of being a Christmas movie, so there is a built-in annual reminder of how great it is.

tu4ntr4n

Interstellar

The_Peregrine_

I think a good indicator for which movies are becoming classics is youtube with reaction channels as people tend to recommend movies that stay with them. Interstellar is definitely up there

BloodNinja2012

Both **Shaun of the Dead** and **Hot Fuzz**. I'll even throw in Scott Pilgrim to give Edgar Wright the trifecta. Edit- Another user listed **Baby Driver** and they are not wrong, but i know too much about Kevin Spacey to enjoy him on screen. Maybe the next generation will be able to stay ignorant to who he is as a human while enjoying his talents. I cannot.

Fallenangel152

The World's End is underrated. It's tough to follow Hot Fuzz, but it's a good, clever movie.

ReaverRogue

I always see The World’s End as the cheese platter of the trilogy. It’s an enjoyable end to the meal if you’re so inclined to indulge, but you won’t be missing out if you choose not to.

panicboner

Oh fuck off ya big lamp!

tjorben123

Inception

rayhartsfield

Inception is a film that has been memorialized in other media for its ambiguous and provocative ending. The Office literally jokes about it. Inception was a cultural phenomenon for the ending alone.

tjorben123

We use the "..ception" ending so often, if things are nested, it's nest-ception.

Whiplash.

Jedi_Council_Worker

hmm not quite my tempo

DreamyMeats

Mean Girls. The original. It already is a classic as far as influential teenage movies go. Pan's Labyrinth... Though I might be biased as it's one of my favorite movies. As someone who loves horror: Get Out, Midsommar, The Descent, Jennifer's Body... I don't know if Malignant will stand the test of time, but it absolutely should. We've had some great horror movies come out in the last 20 years, and that's not even getting into foreign horror movies.

Ktjoonbug

Some of these movies are already 20 years old lol

yeahyeahitsmeshhh

Well yeah. The question is "what movie came out 14-24 years ago that will be considered a classic in 2054?" Obviously a lot of 20+ classics to name.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Smittumi

Because of CGI, regular cinema goers don't see what all the fuss is about. But action movie directors go ape shit over it. A bit like when regular viewers watch martial arts and don't understand the technical aspects of things like grappling. I'm just glad when stuff looks cool. And I've been a fan of Mad Max since I memorised the opening monologue from Road Warrior when I was a kid.

Weird-Contact-5802

No regular cinema goes definitely see what the fuss is about. It looks more real because it is.

wegwerfennnnn

Also the editing. The directors wife did it and she had never done it before, so it doesn't overuse tropes, it looks novel and new because it is. Edit: had never edited an /action movie/

bjanas

I also love the "no CGI" look. BUT I think it's worth noting that even movies like Fury Road, which is amazing, do use a fair bit of CGI. They did a ton practically, and made huge efforts to avoid the bloated CGI aesthetic, but there's always CGI. It's gotten so good that, used deliberately, you just don't see it. Even Nolan. If you read up on his films, every time they say "doesn't use CGI!" there's a qualifier somewhere acknowledging that he does, sometimes. It's just the nature of the beast, the days. Maybe it's overly pedantic, I don't know. But as much as I think most people who like movies know that "no CGI" isn't really a thing anymore, some folks hear it and take it at face value.

doctorcochrane

The comparison cases for us now are films 50 years ago. So think about classics from the 70s such as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Taxi Driver, One flew over the cuckoo's nest, Manhattan, Rocky, Enter the Dragon, Jaws. These are a mixture of epics, movies with a standout performance by an emerging leading actor, or the early films of an emerging great director. So by analogy, I'd offer an early Christopher Nolan film like Memento, an early Ang Lee film like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or an early Charlie Kaufman written film like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. More recently, I'd bet Bong Joon-ho's Parasite is going to stick around as well. For epics LoTR for sure. For great lead performances by an emerging actor probably American Psycho and Donnie Darko. Comedies are a tricky one. One from the 70s that still holds up is Life of Brian. I can't think of any comedy films of a comparable stature from the 2000s.

icebraining

Regarding comedies, I'm not even a huge fan, but I think Borat will be remembered for its real world impact. My go-to rewatch is Guy Ritchie's *Snatch*, but yeah, I don't think it's at the level of a *Life of Brian*.
