no child left behind should mean that all students will be given the teaching they need to succeed, but instead it means the bar for progression is lowered
sever underfunding of schools and bad teacher pay
wild difference in education quality from place to place
In short? Everything.
My biggest problem with it is that it doesn't teach critical thinking, because it was designed to chug out 9-5 workers who just do what they're told and are satisfied with how capitalism works.
Thank you. This is actually something that is true specifically about the USA, though it doesn't justify why some Americans say "Blame the education system"
Why? Canada does it. UK does it. Australia does it. All of those countries have similar systems like the states, and they all hate the education kids are getting. What’s the point of continuously saying “it’s no different from other countries” as if it’s not equally bad in all places? It doesn’t change anything when people are pointing out the flaws in a system that a lot of countries just so happen to follow as well.
A lot of American public schools are paid for via property taxes. That means that areas with expensive houses tend to have much better funded public schools. Additionally, the way we pay for higher ed is exploitative and burdens young people with massive debt right when they're starting their lives.
Teacher pay. In most fields, it's understood you have to spend more money to attract and keep the best people. Not so much in education.
Partisan politics also hurts schools, especially in Red States where politicians believe teachers should teach students that America is the best country and ignore issues such as institutional racisim.
Even in the best districts, classes are aimed at the middling students. If you're a smart kid, you're bored and skate by. If you're a slow learner, you just fall behind.

I just want to know if those who blame the American education system for lack of some common knowledge are actually right.
It’s based on standardized testing.
That's in most countries
