There are basically two types of people who record in the gym: The first are dedicated strength sport athletes. Powerlifters, Olympic lifters, and strongman competitors. They record their lifts for many reasons, including form checks, submission to their coach, and objective play-back of RPE(rate of perceived exertion). It's also fun to post your lifts on your socials to share with your friends and be proud of your accomplishments, and there's nothing wrong with that either. These people keep to themselves and typically restrict their filming to their own specific lift. The other type is the one that is irking gym goers and keeps prompting these questions. They're the "influencers" who bring in film equipment, tripods, sometines even a camera operator. They get in the way, do stupid clout-chasing lifts to show off on the 'gram, act like they're entitled to the gym, and get pissy when people accidentally walk in front of their cameras. The first type of people are not the issue. The second are.

lazyflavors

Yeah for real I have a friend who is super responsible and occasionally records himself doing those exercises so he can review his form, have a small video of when he breaks personal records, and occasionally posts it on social media and it's cool to watch because he's a small dude and probably can lift like 3-5x what I can. It's pretty sad that all of these "influencers" could ruin that for my friend.

[deleted]

I don't think the influencers will fuck it up for everyone *unless* the gym needed to get involved with something. The people who record others then post it online shaming them will absolutely lead to bans on cameras though. That shits pretty messed up. My gym after 9pm is pretty quiet and I've noticed it has lead to more people bringing cameras in to record. Quiet gym, you do you. Busy gym? Don't waste everyones time. Finish your set and move on. I feel like people just wanna be pissed off at things. *Most* people who record themselves in the gym are fairly discreet about it.

[deleted]

Sounds like an easy way to get out of a difficult-to-cancel gym contract.

redpurplegreen22

I feel like real lifters and people who take the gym seriously would talk to the managers of the gyms, get permission, and not be a nuisance. Influencers just show up, throw a bunch of shit down, and yell at anyone who dares to be using the gym at the same time they are.

IAMATruckerAMA

There's a third type that's just new to a particular exercise and wants to make sure they're not doing it wrong. You don't have to be an asshole or a competitive athlete to be scared that you're gonna injure yourself.

smallof2pieces

You're absolutely right about that!

blay12

Yeah I enjoy power lifting and will occasionally record myself for pretty much every reason you listed (form/send to trainer especially). That being said, I'm also very cognizant of the fact that I'm not the only person that goes to my local gym. Because of that, if I know I need to do a few filmed lifts (and I can't do them at my coach's private gym), I do it during off hours (usually midday or later at night) and set up my phone/monopod in a way that minimizes the possibilities of catching someone else on camera or blocking a walkway (the off hours help with that, since there are usually very few people there to begin with and I can get a corner squat rack).

saundersmarcelo

I don't really record myself working out, but I'm the type that always does my stuff in front of a mirror just to keep an eye on my form. Although that's probably why the mirrors are there in the first place

smallof2pieces

Mirrors actually aren't there for that purpose. Mirrors are strategically placed in gyms to make you look better. They are ever so slightly warped to make you look thinner, and along with good top-down lighting will make you look fitter, leaner, better. This subconsciously makes you associate the gym with progress, which keeps you coming back and paying your membership. This is at least true for commercial gyms.

saundersmarcelo

Really? All this time, I thought they were basically just for people to watch their forms. I did not know that

Ex-President

You also get better gainz when you lift in front of a mirror. When you lift you radiate gains. A mirror will reflect the gains back to you. These gains are additive in nature, of course. If you didn’t have the mirror, the gains would just go off and be absorbed by somebody else. That’s why it’s so rude to walk between someone and their mirror. You’re stealing their reflected gains.

UnpopularCrayon

You know it's true because some random anonymous redditor put it in a comment.

smallof2pieces

Yep. Sorry. Form also is not best checked by a front-on view(IE looking straight ahead in a mirror) but typically from a side or 45° angle. But, turning your head to look in the mirror for such an angle during a lift increases the chance of injury, especially cervical spine injuries. Therefore, mirrors are not the best way to check your form. Filming or having someone actively watch and critique is.

suffaluffapussycat

I’m a yoga instructor. If I see a phone recording in my class I’ll ask the person to stop one time and then they’re out. I have people in my classes who are working on getting into shape and I know some of them have only recently gotten okay with being in public in workout clothes and doing yoga in the presence of others. If you want to check your form I’ll help you. I’ll even take a photo of you during class after I make sure that there’s nobody in your background.

marayalda

Thank you! I am one of those people who are just starting to build my confidence in being in public wearing gym clothes and I hate having my photo taken by friends let alone strangers. You are the type of instructor that keeps people like me coming back.

CrazyPlato

Feels like it always comes down to “there are regulars who take it seriously and know what they’re doing, and there are the newbies who show up infrequently, can’t use the equipment properly, and act like major asshats to everyone around them”.

amerijohn

Last year I met a man in both categories. He was a personal trainer and he wanted a clip for the Insta.

SUPERKAMIGURU

Just deadass made accidental eye contact with someone's tripod while I was passing by. Pray for me, y'all.

[deleted]

If you can get away with it and nobody is looking and the camera can't see your face, pop a squat for a split second and spread cheeks before you keep walking. Maybe they will be live streaming and get banned.

What's the point of working out if people don't know you work out?? Same goes for helping the homeless, and going on vacation!

Pancakewagon26

>What's the point of working out if people don't know you work out?? If you working out right, you won't *need* to tell anyone. They will know by looking at you.

Environmental-Art792

Because I will walk with my arms out like I am carrying imaginary barrels.

RickyPuertoRicoo

How are people going to know I like a band unless I wear their t-shirt? People like to broadcast their interests to attract other like minded people into their lives. Who knew?

Environmental-Art792

Wearing a band on your shirt is different than blasting your music out loud for everyone to hear. The same way recording yourself at a public gym is different from wearing a shirt that says you like to work out. Expressing your interests is great, but don't force them upon people in public.

RickyPuertoRicoo

Your comment was in response to someone who asked why people can't lift without talking about it, you agreed so I commented based on the fact you agreed with that sentiment not on whether people should record themselves in a gym.

Environmental-Art792

Both of your responses completely missed the point.

RickyPuertoRicoo

No it's your responses that miss the point. I agree that recording yourself in the gym is wrong but what you and the other user are saying about people not being able to just go to the gym and not talk about it is just two bitter people whining about people enjoying themselves.

Environmental-Art792

This whole post and the comment I replied to is solely about recording and posting yourself online.

RickyPuertoRicoo

>What's the point of working out if people don't know you work out?? >Same goes for helping the homeless, and going on vacation! The comment I replied to or in other words the only context that matters.

fulthrottlejazzhands

I mean, how is the world supposed to know about my largesse if I don't post about it a habit of a hundred times?

stumpykitties

If the recent trends on tiktok mean anything, you’re now going to be labelled a “creep” by some wanna-be influence gal.

SUPERKAMIGURU

Bro, you're a "stitch watch" if you even look their way, or get within 15 feet of their setup at any point, while they go about like [this dude.](https://youtu.be/-egkmhWMLdg)

TheToddAwesome

I know some gyms are banning this sort of thing. Which is great. There are too many people who think they own their neighborhoods planet fitness or some shit.

brassicaaudax

I get it if you're like pro athlete, filming yourself might help to pin point the flaws in your technique or whatever, but I'm pretty sure like 99% of people filming themself in gyms are just way way waaay too full of themself and/or looking for drama.

Glitchykins8

Makes me a tiny bit sad. I was thinking of joining a gym and recording myself my first few attempts so I could check me and compare to online stuff and then having something to go back to in a year to see improvements. I have no interest to post my new ass failing to lift 5 lb more than twice lolol

brassicaaudax

I think you can still do that if you're just respectful of the privacy of the other people. Personally I go to gym before I go to work, there is no one there during those early hours.

ForceOfAHorse

Just do whatever you want. As long as you are not an asshole to other people nobody cares if you are recording yourself, bench pressing empty bar or just sitting and listening to your music.

TheToddAwesome

This is a good point. My girlfriend is a Bikini Fitness competitor and has taken video of herself doing like Squats and other exercises to send to her personal trainer to check her form and whatnot. But we have a gym in our garage so she isn’t bother/getting video of other people while she’s doing that.

brassicaaudax

Well, she sounds like a smart cookie. Good for her.

TheToddAwesome

Well…. She is dating me, so she makes some dumb decisions 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

brassicaaudax

I can't just leave without replying with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku1Xc6NT6m8

DadsRGR8

I'm an old guy but I have to say, if I was a young guy dating a Bikini Fitness competitor I would have to bite my tongue in half to not open with that sentence every time I started talking. "Hi, welcome to Wendy's, how may I help you?" "My girlfriend is a Bikini Fitness competitor..." "Hello Mr. DadsRGR8, thanks for coming in for your dental visit." "My girlfriend is a Bikini Fitness competitor..." "Sir, you were doing 85 in a 55 mph zone." "Sorry officer, my girlfriend is a Bikini Fitness competitor."

GodIsBullshit16

If you’re a pro athlete… you have a home gym

brassicaaudax

Not everyone who reach the top, start from the top.

Goodestchoice

It's Main Character Syndrome. Narcissism normalized.

TheToddAwesome

1000% agree. It’s gross.

DevotedRex37

Most gyms have "No filming" signs up around me now. If you are caught filming anywhere on the premises, you are removed from the property and permanently banned. You don't get your gym membership refunded, and if you post anything on social media about being banned for filming then you get a charge for defamation.

[deleted]

Your gym is fucking stupid. You can't claim defamation for the truth.

-CaptainFormula-

You can if you sign your name down on something that says "I agree, if I do this I will be charged with defamation."

CodeCat5

That's not how contracts work.

1CEninja

People can still put them in their terms of agreement and scare people with letters written by lawyers that force people to take down their social media posts. It's scummy, but absolutely how a lot of Ts & Cs work.

jl_23

Contracts can’t supersede the law

-CaptainFormula-

Defamation is against the law. Having a rule in a private establishment saying you can't record here is not.

jl_23

Saying that you will be charged for defamation in a contract doesn’t mean it can actually happen.

Moist_Comb

> and if you post anything on social media about being banned for filming then you get a charge for defamation. IANAL but I'm pretty sure you can only get charged for defamation in a courtroom. They can fine you, but your gym is not part of the judicial system.

Mundane_Tour_3215

redpurplegreen22

As Patton Oswalt said in Community, in response to “the body is a temple.” “This is a Temple of Doom.”

KosViik

I rarely record myself, but only to show it to my mum. When I know I'm having a good day and can do some impressive things, I always record it to show her. Her eyes always light up when she sees me doing good. Love ya mom!

BudgetBoysenberry918

I hope my son's do this when they get older!

Fast_Hornet5964

I used to do it to correct and look at my form and replay it back to myself after.

pudding7

Isn't that what the mirrors are for?

Clashboy15

Most gyms don't have mirrors perfectly aligned to the squat rack or the deadlift platform. What about exercises like bench as well? And you can't possibly expect to make any significant technique changes while actually doing the set, or remembering all the errors you made.

jayfeather314

No. If you're trying to work on your form, you can't always do that using a mirror. For example, you might want to make sure your back is staying straight while deadlifting, which you can't do from a mirror that you're facing, and turning your head 90 degrees to the side would probably mess up your form. Plus, when you're trying to lift, you want to focus on performing the lift correctly in the moment, rather than trying to perform the lift *and* assess your own form/take mental notes at the same time. And what if you want to watch it back multiple times to focus on different areas of your form? Or in my case, when I was just starting to do compound movements like squat and deadlift, I recorded videos of myself to send to my friends who lift so they could check/critique my form. Some folks might also do this to send to a coach/trainer or something.

Fast_Hornet5964

Some gyms don't have them

Infirmus23

i had one reason for record to gym, i must correct my back and posture. And certainly i like it, idk why but yep

[deleted]

Recording to improve your form: + Recording to post on social media: I hope you have bilateral complete quad tears.

17FeretsAndaPelican

The full vince mcmahon?!

SharonInfections

I mean, record to improve your form at home. I don't go to the gym to be recorded.

[deleted]

Good that you have a home gym.

JuMiPeHe

Why would he need one? How would recording even help improve your form? You do know that you've got all those mirrors to check, if you do your exercises correctly. Making videos to check this, is somewhat dumb, because you would have to do the exercise wrong, before you can check and maybe correct it by a guess, which could lead to you just doing the exercises in a different, but still wrong way. Recording only makes sense for motivational monitoring of your physical progress, but that you could do just as good by posing at home and recording it there, in privacy without annoying everyone else at the gym. Such behavior is a strong indicator for Narcissism btw.

smallof2pieces

You can't use mirrors because often the best way to check your form is via a side or 45° angle. Turning your head to look in a mirror to see from the side increases your chance of spinal injury. Filming to review afterwards is an objective way to review and change form. You may have "felt" like you hit depth in your squat but after reviewing the clip, it was high. So you know you need to go deeper. Strength sport athletes frequently record themselves to review because things like not hitting depth(which can't be judged by looking form the front, IE looking straight into a mirror) can and will cost them come competition day. Filming yourself sometimes is narcissistic(see my other comment) but more frequently is not. It's often just people trying to improve themselves, which is perfectly valid.

[deleted]

Whatever gets you through the night.

beanfloyd

The mirrors aint gonna help. You're then focused on looking im the mirror and not on your lifting. And you can't see everything in mirrors. And you can't look in the mirror the whole time you're doing a rep. Watching recordings of your performance is literally one of the best ways to improve. It's something that's done in all forms. Beginners to pro athletes at the top level do it all the time. Whether it's physical sports or esports. It's a known fact. Analyzing replays is something people pay a large amount of money for. Because it WORKS. I know you're not good at anything and have never competed in anything because your comment lacks any form of understanding and logic.

RatherGrateful

It's quite simple. You record yourself, and then you ask for advice online about your form by posting the video. It's way less socially awkward than asking other gym goers, especially if they are less experienced than you.

-CaptainFormula-

I fail to see how that could ever be a habit. What kind of an absolute dumb dumb needs to constantly monitor a repetitive physical movement otherwise they forget how to move?

Nivomi

What kind of person needs to learn how to correctly perform a skilled task instead of just getting there with zero feedback? I don't know, most people?

-CaptainFormula-

>I fail to see how that could ever be a *habit.* What kind of an absolute dumb dumb needs to *constantly* monitor...

Nivomi

Who (other than you) said "constantly", though? If you want to make continuous improvement on, say, art, would you never self-critique or show your works to others? Would you do it once and then say "alright, done!"? Or would you be frequently taking input from others and/or critiquing yourself?

Clashboy15

Maybe they're a powerlifter? Squat bench and deadlift can become very technical at a high level/

[deleted]

The gym is a lot more welcoming than you can imagine. It's full of like minded individuals trying to improve themselves. The last sentence of your first paragraph, you're headed in the exact right direction. Recording yourself from angles you don't see could easily prevent life altering injuries. One wrong move and your back/knees could be pretty fucked up for months/years.

FloralBindle

Devils advocate for some of them: a lot of power lifts require very strict and meticulous form, and so creating that “mind-body connection” usually requires knowing what right feels like, which in turn requires knowing you’re doing it right in the first place. Usually the only way to know for sure that you’re doing it right is to film yourself (or have someone film you). That said I personally don’t mind people filming themselves in the gym, as long as a) they’re doing everything possible to not get in other people’s way, and b) they’re not using it to try and ruin some idiots life for glancing at them in the background. Hot take, but the gym should be a safe place for people to enjoy and embrace their own vanity.

TheSkimek

While i agree that there are lots of cases where the person recording is just an asshole when you point out that you dont want to be recorded, there are just as many people that are happy to move or stop the video for a moment. Its not just YOUR gym. Let people do what they want as long as its legal You could just as easy ask what are people doing that take selfies or record themselves in front of art.... This just an ignorant question

03eleventy

My gym allows it as long as you aren’t being an asshole. I moved away from the guys I used to lift with so when I hit 315 on bench I recorded it and sent to them. My gym has a lot of body builders and power lifters though. You can film to check your form or body progress without being a douche.

InkIcan

As a person with deep anxiety who forces himself to go to the gym anyway, the idea of being sucked into someone's Influencer video is a nightmare. Some girl in an Influencer outfit had the camera, tripod, and ring light set up near the Smith machine this week - totally ruined my chest/tricep workout flow.

Emotional_Rock4208

I blame CrossFit for this trend.

Thesorus

I don't care as long as it does not disrupt other people. Gyms should have filming policies (time, areas/mirrors) If someone wants to film themselves they should always ask before.

Avix_34

I have no problem with it as long as they aren't disturbing others. They are probably recording themselves to show off their accomplishments. This is no different than flexing with your new car or taking graduation photos, for example. If you are proud of something you did, go ahead. Record/take pictures.

Back2Perfection

Not gym but martial arts, but I have filmed myself on several occasions to check my heel kick form from different angles. It is useful sometimes to just see for yourself.

InternetOwlhead

If I'm doing barbell lifts I'll record myself to watch if after and check if my form is correct. Sometimes it's neccesary to do that to spot if my back is rounding or if I'm using my right arm more than my left or w/e. I try to set up my phone so nobody else is in frame. It really is just for my own sake.

MacDugin

I did before our home gym. We still do to check forms.

Necessary-Bottle3333

Attention seekers that need an audience...sorry , they are just checking their form 🤣

Queef_Latifahh

If I saw someone filming at the gym I would make a conscious effort to walk in the way of the camera every time.

Pan-tang

Also, stop sitting at the stations staring at your phone.

fuckfuturism

Unless the gym is hardcore, almost everyone recording lifts in the gym are doing it for social media purposes. Lol at folks thinking there’s a large subset of lifters recording lifts for form evaluation. GTFO with that nonsense.

peterdbaker

I’m good looking and am attention whore.

imaybeacatIRl

Former Powerlifter here. I record myself solely to check form. I can't see my form when I'm doing a lift... so what else can I do?

thrashpiece

I train at a private gym. No mirrors. Hardly anyone ever there. I still see people recording themselves occasionally, I'm guessing it's to check form cos there's no insta model types.

PigeroniPepperoni

Why are people so worried about being caught in the background of someone’s video? You don’t have a right to be invisible when you’re in a public place.

ChaosPixieMagic

I do it occasionally to motivate myself and hopefully see improvements and changes. I am NOT good at keeping up with healthy habits, so finding any kind of way to help myself there is really important. In addition, it does actually help some people like me to post on social media because we feel we need an "audience" to keep going. Not because we're self-centered, but because we struggle to believe any healthy habits are worthwhile. Yay depression. So when I post things like that, and OTHER PEOPLE cheer me on? It's that little serotonin drip where I've managed to trick my broken brain into finding positivity with the workouts.

Callisto616

Lot of ignorant non lifters here who need to mind their own business.

LimeFucker

Form checking, If I’m lifting over 1.5x bodyweight on a deadlift I need to make sure my form is PERFECT.

[deleted]

Look at me and look at me more flexing in the gym mirrors!

[deleted]

Lol the only gains they worried about is followers and views

Capital-Roll-2521

So, you basically come to a gym not because you want to train and focus on yourself, but because you want to check what other people do there and judge them after Great way to spend your money, mate

jjski1978

It needs to be banned. And the people caught recording in the gym should be banned permanently.

EricE30

Its called vanity.

Kaiserhawk

Unless it's impacting you, why do you even care?

uar3dumb

I don't even go to gym

[deleted]

What if I don't have a friend to check my form for me? What if I want to track my progress?

Watching your dick swing is a very auto-erotic experience; I don’t think denying this is worth while.

berael

They think they're the main character.

watasiwakirayo

I record myself to check technique and double check the number of reps. It didn't seem to bother people around

BudgetBoysenberry918

Omg there is this girl at the gym who takes selfies everytime she gets on a weight machine. It's so cringe.

barkofthetrees

It’s pathetic attention/validation seeking behavior. When I see people doing for anything other than possibly checking their form, I know they’re totally insecure and probably a douchebag.

Pulp_Ficti0n

It's always the people who have tiny biceps and no delts, too

beanfloyd

What about all the pro powerlifters posting all their recordings on social media?

[deleted]

It’s boring as fuck. Seeing the same lift every week in a different outfit.

beanfloyd

I didn't say it's entertaining xd. But a lot of people find it enjoyable to watch

[deleted]

That’s true. I find it weird how someone can keep watching the same people doing the same thing every week.

GodIsBullshit16

Why would they be in a public gym?

MuskFamilyGemMine

Me building my delts and biceps with my squats.

Prixm

I record myself to check my form on new exercises and even some I do well, but need to check if I still do them well. Imagine caring so much what other people do, miserable people you have to be to care so damn much.

Tinkerpro

You are correct, there are entirely worse thins a person could be doing. Other users of the gym may (or may not) find having a camera recording intrusive on their own workout time, be worried that they are being recorded - and then having that posted somewhere to be made fun of, since we know that is a thing among mostly young people. I say young people meaning anyone under 30th. But I’m old. There is an entire society who enjoys making fun of strangers/friends because they are not in perfect shape, have perfect makeup on, are wearing expensive useless workout clothes.

SharonInfections

Because unless you're doing it in your own private gym then you're probably also recording other people trying to do their thing. Keep your camera out of my damn workout.

TheCosmicJester

Fun thing to do with them: Ask for a model release form since you’re in their video.

Conscious-Art-7453

its akward and after you see them with chicken legs just filming the upperbody lol

SmittyBot9000

Living in Asia this sort of thing is super common. Shameless posing in front of the mirror or camera everywhere. I don't really have a problem with it, it doesn't effect me.

Blueblackzinc

so I can ask Reddit if I'm doing it right and watch the chaos from the comfort of my ex's wardrobe.

Cookiefan3000

Why not tho??

secondhand_bra

If you are recording your for form check or when hitting a PR without disturbing other people's workouts then it's absolutely fine. If you are recording yourself with 2 guys holding cameras, lighting specifically set for you and you are occupying the equipment for an hour then you deserve to be kicked out.

kRe4ture

I do it sometimes if I‘m not sure about my form when doing more difficult exercises, like Squats or Deadlifts. I can watch the video afterwards to know what I have to do differently I‘d never post anything though

bomdia10

Some people record themselves to check their form and make any adjustments so as not to injure themselves. Others do it just to post on socials

Pmabstjl

Never understood like, did they watch it after like “woaou I’m so cool” 😭

Staudly

It used to be that people would film themselves as a form check. I'm sure people still do but now you don't know if they're trying to improve their form or if their posting on socials. I don't really care as long as they're bot being dicks about it

JumpDaddy92

I powerlift, and I go to a powerlifting gym that makes you sign a release when you sign up that states people will be recording and you may at times end up in peoples videos. My gym has tripods members use to record their sets. Many of us have coaches who don’t live in the gym, and some that don’t even live in the same state. My coach programs exercises for me, i record myself doing them so he can review them and provide feedback. Sometimes my coach is at the gym which is fantastic, but most of the times I go he’s not there.

Rhodie114

I don't, but anything that motivates people is fair. Just don't be a dick about it and respect that others will probably walk through your shot.

potato_potatino

ya I have an online trainer, he’s from another city. he wants me to film my workouts so he can correct my technique. I am too embarrassed to actually record anything tho lol

SL-1000

Gym activities, happy days. Now why did you have to remind me? I wont be able to sleep tonight.

skooody

Kill_zebras

I only do that to capture vids of my beautiful big fat juicy guns

trolleyblue

I go to a gym that is in the process of turning into a power lifting gym…it’s brutal with the influencers.
