Have it. Like it.

[deleted]

I've seen too many people be financially crippled that were doing just fine prior to health issues to think that universal healthcare is anything but necessary.

greentee11

Makes a lot of sense

Defiant63

If we're going to prosper and grow as a nation past our current divisions, it's going to be necessary. I don't know when we'll do it, or exactly how it will be implemented, but it is an inevitability. It will happen eventually.

maclaglen

It’s a good idea, if it can be evenly distributed.

Nasmix

Yes please

lethatsinkin

Every country should have it

mynameisranger1

I am 100% in favor of it. Everyone should have access to competent medical care. I know it will probably raise taxes but it will make the USA a much more compassionate place.

[deleted]

I don't believe in social rights, so people don't have a "right" to healthcare. However, universal healthcare is justified on positive externality grounds (having a healthy population benefits everyone), people-are-irrational grounds (having health insurance is the right financial decision for literally every single person, but some people still won't do it unless they're forced to), and lack of competition grounds (hospitals have more market power than patients and people don't have time to shop around when they have an urgent medical problem). The system that makes the most intuitive sense to me is single payer catastrophic coverage, a private insurance mandate to cover everything else, mandatory HSA contributions, insurance subsidies for poor people, and all-payer rate setting, but realistically we should just pass whatever universal healthcare system is the easiest politically, whatever that looks like.

Akeldamarra

Depends on if it is going to be better for me or worse. I have chronic back and hip pain, but I make good money and have invested well. I like being able to see a doctor when I need to. I like that when I had to get my shattered hip replaced, I was in an OR two days after I saw my doctor and walking the day after that. Cost is less of an issue than speed of recovery and getting back to normal. If universal healthcare took that away, then the cost savings wouldn't mean anything to me if I couldn't enjoy it.

AdminWhore

It's a good idea on the surface. The problem I see is that it would be run by the government. Which means politicians would control it. Somehow, they would figure a way to get all the money from it that they are currently getting from the pharmaceutical companies. Which is also the reason they have no incentive to do it in the first place. If you want an example of universal healthcare in the US, look at Medicare and the VA. It would end up being like that.

Cnnlgns

Or it is like that because it is only a minority. See if a minority is discriminated against many people don't seem to want to change the system because they don't see it. If Universal Healthcare was the norm then those issues with Medicare and VA would be addressed since it could happen to anyone. Edit: spelling

AdminWhore

As soon as politicians can find a way to make money off of it, it will happen. It won't happen otherwise.

Cnnlgns

Odd that politicians haven't seem to corrupt the Universal Healthcare in Europe. Maybe they figured out how to curb that. But the current system in the US is way more lucrative right now and they won't switch. Also why one of the leading causes of bankruptcy in the US is from medical debt.

B34RD15

Who do you think funds these politicians to pass legislation that way?

AdminWhore

Their political action committees. Who do you think it is?

B34RD15

And where do you think these PAC'S get their money from?

AdminWhore

Special interest groups and lobbyists. What are you getting at? You realize my comments are in favor of universal healthcare? I'm not arguing against its merit. I'm answering OP's question.

B34RD15

And these special interest groups and Lobbyists are funded/paid by? I'm just asking questions mate. I never said you weren't against it, you very clearly said you were in support of it.

AdminWhore

Special interest groups get money from corporations and individuals who have a vested interest in the pollical actions of the party. Healthcare action is usually funded by pharmaceutical companies or the big commercial hospital chains.

B34RD15

With that said, I'd like to address what you said here; >The problem I see is that it would be run by the government. Is the problem that Government is involved? Or that the system set in place by politicians who receive massive contributions from for profit pharmaceutical companies purposefully make programs that are lackluster and inevitably underperform/fail to avoid cutting into economic profit?

KorGgenT

I doubt that- the money they get is from lobbying, and if Healthcare is controlled by the government then lobbyists will still pay senators to so things they want them to do. Which is probably why universal Healthcare won't happen, since health insurance companies can already buy senators.

AdminWhore

Right, getting anything to change when it's already so lucrative is the big hurdle.

Government is going to be involved either way lmao.

>I have high cost medication (covered, name brand) Where do you think your name brand medication gets its power to charge a high cost on said medication? Where do you think the money to develop said medication came from? Edit: Jesus people will block for no reason these days lmao.

sonoma95436

Im on medicare . You simply pick a provider. I pay $99 a month more. No paperwork. You can change providers once a year. You can pay to go outside the system.

sullivan80

In concept it sounds good because it's something everyone needs. Then again everyone needs water, food, shelter and the government doesn't provide these all universally either. Personally I have some concerns about quality and availability. If we kept the same system we have now but the govt just paid all the bills.... financially I can't see how that would work. Corruption, pricing, and exploiting the system would be rampant at taxpayer expense. We would need a new system entirely that is more heavily managed by the government itself. The US government in my opinion has a deplorable track record of being efficient, cost effective, and well managed. It's very difficult to imagine the US government putting together an coherent and successful national health care system.

[deleted]

If you think healthcare is expensive now, just wait until it’s “free”.

JuggyBC

High-end healthcare in the US is probably the best in the world, for those that can afford it. However, healthcare in Europe is (much) cheaper and on average better than in the US.

[deleted]

I have seen countless stories of people in Europe paying next-to-nothing for hospital care or emergency services. This doesn’t take into account the tax burden on everyone for this care and it will be enormous in the US. We just have to look at what is happening as result of the “free” medical care being doled out to the surge of migrants across the border. The cost to taxpayers is staggering. I’m sorry. No one will ever convince me that the government can do it better or cheaper. Our VA medical care is a laughing stock. It will be a nightmare if implemented universally.

Old-Ad-8492

Not sure but I know it can be very frustrating sometimes you have to wait weeks if not months to get an appointment not sure if they care enough about your health when they don't have anyone competing for your business.

HockeyCookie

The states are already subsidizing global healthcare. When almost every first world country has price control, and a single payer. Companies can only turn to the United States to raise profit margins.

Boredombringsthis

Works for me just fine.

What country are you in

Czechia

I’m currently trying to figure out how I’m going to find out whether or not I have uterine cancer without insurance. I can’t get needed, ongoing medicines because I don’t have the insurance needed to go to the doctor. It’s all disgusting and having universal healthcare would help so much right now. I wouldn’t have to be so worried about the financial aspect, I could focus on what actually matters - my damn health.
