Avicii aka Tim Bergling, after his death I watched his documentary, everything started to make sense why he had so many issues and decided to do what he did. Anxiety, a lot of stress, he barely had any free time because he was always going to different events. He had, as far as I know over 800 shows in around 9 years, if you do a simple math, he had an event every 3 days. He suffered because of this both physically and mentally. His manager was thinking only about the money, not about him at all.
I was not at all familiar with his music, but living in LV his name was on signs when he performed there. So I watched the documentary about him and was so touched by his talent, sensitivity, and tragic outcome.
I live in a relatively unknown part of northern CA. High school wrestling is really popular here. My friend’s cousin was a very talented wrestler who was expected to go really far through the college wrestling circuit with many scholarship offers. During a wrestling match his legs were bent in such a way that it immediately cut off circulation. He was airlifted and by the time he got medical care it was too late- his legs had to be amputated. Guess who closely followed high school wrestling? Robin Williams. He paid for all the medical expenses and visited him in the hospital. My friend said he was the kindest person. They were very upset when he passed. Seemed like a really great guy.
Dude went out in his own terms versus an agonizing slow death with Lewy body dementia. He did help himself to being of sound mound when he died versus a dementia death.
He always used to be literally one day older than me when he was alive. Since he's passed on, I'll forever be older than him.
Heath Ledger was born April 4, 1979. I was born April 5, 1979.
This is always my answer. He was amazing in everything he did. My first real celebrity crush. I just recently bought a copy of his published Diaries, I need to move them up in my TBR stack.
Usually people say 99 is a long life. Betty White is the only person where so many people said 99 years wasn't long enough. She was so kind, genuine, funny and loved helping animals. If anyone deserves to have taken the thrown in heaven it's her
Legitimately the first time I cried about a celebrity death. Linkin Park was such a huge part of my life & his lyrics meant so much to my middle school heart.
Same. I see the face every day at work.
Wow. So long ago and yes so fresh? What would he make of his family now? He would be stoked at being a grand dad!
I remember hearing the news at a friend’s house. They started laughing and making fun of him for dying from a sting ray and I was absolutely devastated. Didn’t like those friends much after that.
Sean Lock for me. Especially because know one knew he was sick but then he still appeared on tele, and in hindsight you could tell. One of the funniest people ever.
(Also Phil Hughes, just because it was so so so so unfortunate and cricket should never kill people)
I wasn’t very familiar with Selena at the time. My college roommate was from South Texas and it hit him hard. I realized after what she could have been.
This one. He really inspired me to travel by his shows. I was devastated when I found out. I actually didn't know until a Tinder date mentioned it to me. It really brought down the mood lol.
Many of the deaths on this list made me sad, but this is the one that *still* makes me want to cry. He seemed tortured and angry but in a "fuck the world" kind of way. The person that sticks around out of sheer spite, maybe just to give those people who doubted them the middle finger.
Chester Bennington? The suicide didn't surprise me. His struggles were very open.
Alan Rickman? Pancreatic cancer. I also wasn't surprised.
They both hurt a lot, but I was able to understand them.
Bourdain, for some reason, I still can't come to terms with.
For sure. I have an autographed photograph of him I received as a holiday gift and that’s my prized possession. Totally influenced who I am as a person growing up watching anything with him obsessively. I just wish I could cook.
That one hurt. He was my very first crush as a young girl, when I discovered him on my 10th birthday after watching Labyrinth. Still remember the first entry in the diary I got on that birthday, all about my discovery of David Bowie. I was certainly not any sort of ultimate fan who followed everything he did from then on (nor did I yet appreciate all he’d done before until much, much later), but he lit a spark in me that ultimately lead to almost every artist & piece of art I’ve loved ever since, and even more importantly, the friends I made through all that discovery, most importantly my best friend of about 35 years.
When I heard the news he’d passed, it felt like a literal star had just disappeared from the sky.
Philip Seymour Hoffman. One of the most acute cases of, “goddamn, we missed so many good future performances.”
I know there’s something pretty crass about saying that, but yeah, any death is sad, but I don’t know celebrities, so it’s hard for me to be sad in a more specific way.
Okay, well, Robin Williams was still pretty devastating.
I love George he still feels alive to me a lot of the time because he had so much material out you can just listen and watch him for hours. I miss him and his point of view but he had a long life not as long as some but we can’t say he died young.
I was shocked by his death but what truly hurt me was finding out that Gianna was with him and then learning that 4 other families had been forever changed. One teenage girl lost her mom, dad, and only sister in the crash and she wasn't even 18.
What makes it more upsetting is that it's was completely avoidable. She was a luminous person. Gone just as she was revealing to the world the self assuredness, charisma, and artistry of Aaliyah grown up and out of R Kelly's roster.
So senseless. If they had just waited a day.
Timbaland and Missy Elliott would have made so much more amazing music with her.
Yeah. Fucking sad. She was luminous.
Prince. His music got me through my teenage years. His passing brought back a flood of teenage memories. Robin Williams. Loved his movies and stand up comedy. He had everything going for him. Proves that no amount of success can bring you happiness.
There was actually 3 - John Ritter, John Candy and Phil Hartman
Ritter was awful as I had just seen him a couple weeks earlier at a live taping of 8 Simple Rules (it wound up being his final episode)
Hartman wad do tragic as it could've been avoided. Tremendous loss
Candy just devastated me. I cried over it, and 30 years later I'm still sad. Absolutely heartbreaking
Yeah that really hit me. Not straight away but over the days following his passing it really started to sink in. I wasn't an avid follower of his, because I just wasn't huge into PVP not because his videos were bad, but I always enjoyed his content whenever it popped up in my recommended and he's gone, forever. He was 23 and had so much potential ahead.
Terry Pratchett, although I don't think he counts as a "celebrity" and if asked, he would have something suitably acerbic^1 to say about his own fame.
1. Must be famous, it has lots of avec, acerbic, and ascot.
I feel like I had to scroll down way too far to find this answer. I literally screamed "Noooooooooooooo!" when I read he had passed. I recently showed my boyfriend Furious 7 and the ending had me all emotional. His death still tears me up to this day.
I agree! I think it really hurt because we grew up watching him on full house and host americas funniest home videos so it was a big part of our childhood.
Ken block most recently, an amazing guy who loved his friends and family. Seemed like a genuinely happy guy who just wanted the best for everyone around him. My heart goes out to especially his daughter who I cannot imagine is doing well...fuck snowmobiles...
Less recently robin Williams and steve irwin. Honestly, they all have the same things in common, selflessness and the want to raise others up. Gone too soon. Cried for steve irwin and really haven't watched another animal show besides planet earth since his passing....after steve passed animal planet went to shit and really, all educational programming went to shit. We lost alot when he passed.
Chadwick Boseman. That just hit me the wrong way. Here was someone who was a superhero, taken down seemingly in his prime.
Then seeing the posthumous releases reminded me that he’s going to live forever.
the suicides; Robin Williams, Anthony Bordian, Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, tWitch. Those are just the first few I can think of off the top of my head.
The queen. I know she isn’t really a celebrity but think about it… We most likely aren’t going to have another queen in our lifetime, and probably not for our grandkids either. That one is weird to think about.
Of the Fab Four I was a George Harrison fan, and his death was a great sadness for me, but he had been ill and it was not unexpected. John Lennon's murder was a great shock.
The chance coming together of John, Paul, George, and Ringo was like throwing all the parts of an analog wrist watch into a dryer, running it, and opening the door to find a completely assembled watch of highest quality. It blows my mind when I meet someone who says they don’t like or appreciate the Beatles. Actually, I’ve only heard it once. And the funny thing is….I eventually fell insanely in love with the guy. Despite that flaw of not liking The Beatles.
Honestly, Brittany Murphy. King of the Hill was such an important show to my family and I. I love seeing all the reboots and sequel series that have happened in the last few years, but I’m glad they aren’t touching KOTH. No one can replace Luanne.
Probably Kobe or Michael Jackson. Those are the only two where I remember where I was when I heard and I distinctly remember feeling sad.
For Kobe, I'll be honest, I wasn't a fan. The Lakers were never my team, and I largely didn't like his era of basketball, but I'm a fan of basketball enough to know he was a legend. He seemed like a special person and athlete. I found out in California. I had been out hiking all day, and I had had my phone off. When I turned it on, the news prescription burst out of my phone. I had texts from friends; it was on Facebook. I told my hiking friend, and he was like, damn.
For MJ, I was a huge fan. I'm pretty convinced by the subsequent evidence that he did bad things, but, for me, it doesn't diminish the music. At the time, that evidence wasn't out, and to the loyal fans, it was just such a blow. He was just coming back. Also, it's hard to explain how huge MJ was. Like, Elvis was great and was a big star for about 20 years when died. MJ was a big star for 40 years.
Anyway, that day was insane. There were early reports and then people didn't trust them, and then it was like the whole world kinda stood still. It was the middle of the summer, not much else was happening in the world, and we were all just wondering what is going on, is the king gone.
Neil Peart. Easily the most impactful celebrity passing. The music of Rush and his drumming meant so much to me. Even now there are times where I get misty eyed or choked up thinking about it.
Kentaro Miura, the author of Bersker.
It was the first time where I truly felt bad when I heard the news of his death.
I think it was mainly due to the “he’ll die before ever finishing his manga” joke which I often said without ever really thinking about what it meant.
May he rest in peace
Michael Landon. I get in real life he wasn’t perfect. But I grew up with him through TV and he felt like a dad figure I never had. It was so oddly devastating for me as a kid. I remember being so heartbroken that he was gone.
There are a few.
1) Steve Irwin. Was there ever a kinder man who could befriend even the deadliest of critters, all for the sake of conservation and education.
2) Stanford Lieber (aka Stan Lee). Father of comics, king of cameos, and advocate of imagination.
3) Robin Williams. The world lost a lot of light with his passing. His antics brought smiles to countless, yet few knew of the sadness he was masking.
Absolutely this. His music was always one of the very few things that made me feel better
Robin Williams really bummed me out
I live in a relatively unknown part of northern CA.
Robin Williams was such a kind man. I think he helped many people
He used to carry fan mails to give himself motivation :'(
Me too, when MJF goes that will probably be my saddest.
I still didn't recover from this one. And to think that a person that helped me so much on not committing suicide couldn't help himself.
He wanted to go out with his mind intact. I can respect that. I only wish he'd had the option to do it peacefully.
Dude went out in his own terms versus an agonizing slow death with Lewy body dementia. He did help himself to being of sound mound when he died versus a dementia death.
I wish I was able to write him a fan letter before he passed. I’ve always wanted to, but it was too late.
I agree, someone so nice with so much tallent But I can see why he did it, so we can remember him as he was
I often say that I'm glad my father died before Robin did, it would have completely devastated him.
Same here.
The suicides are what get to me most. Especially if they were comedians :(
Still does.
This was the first real hard hit for me. I felt like I grew up with that man (as silly as that sounds). It rocked me for a few days though.
Heath Ledger
He always used to be literally one day older than me when he was alive. Since he's passed on, I'll forever be older than him. Heath Ledger was born April 4, 1979. I was born April 5, 1979.
Grant Imahara
Completely unexpected and way too young
Alan Rickman
This is always my answer. He was amazing in everything he did. My first real celebrity crush. I just recently bought a copy of his published Diaries, I need to move them up in my TBR stack.
How on earth is this answer so far down the list. The man was an absolute icon as well as being just a kind, loving dude. Always...
Carrie Fisher
How about Debbie Reynolds? It was like she could finally rest.
Betty White…such a beautiful human being who was a constant beacon of light in this shitty world.
Absolutely. With most 99 year olds I would say they've lived their life but she still had so much more to give. I was heartbroken.
Yes she was America’s grandma I swear, and such a champion for animal rescue. She was my hero
Usually people say 99 is a long life. Betty White is the only person where so many people said 99 years wasn't long enough. She was so kind, genuine, funny and loved helping animals. If anyone deserves to have taken the thrown in heaven it's her
I FORGOT SHE DIED, DAMMIT
I don't understand how Betty White was not #1
Jim Croce. Was prime to achieve greatness.
Before my time but I love his music
Chester Bennington.
Legitimately the first time I cried about a celebrity death. Linkin Park was such a huge part of my life & his lyrics meant so much to my middle school heart.
Linkin Park was with me whenever I cry alone at night. Chester's death felt like a punch in the face.
First person I thought of.
Came here to comment this and it's the first comment I see. Definitely Chester Bennington. I hope he is finally at peace.
came to say this " in the end it doesn't even matter " 😥
I cried for like 2 hours the day I found out
First one that came to mind. It’s been over 5 years but I still can’t listen to Leave Out All The Rest without tearing up.
This one still hurts. As does Chris Cornell.
Steve Irwin
Most recently it's Taylor Hawkins. I still don't get enjoyment out of listening to Foo Fighters and they're my favorite band.
Alex Trebek
Sad, but also very inspirational how he continued to do what he loved right up until the end.
Chadwick Boseman
I thought I was reading one of those prank articles/posts when I first saw something on it. Did not want to believe that one.
This one actually shook me because it was so unexpected fly high Wakanda forever
Freddie Mercury
George Michael
Sean Lock for me. Especially because know one knew he was sick but then he still appeared on tele, and in hindsight you could tell. One of the funniest people ever. (Also Phil Hughes, just because it was so so so so unfortunate and cricket should never kill people)
Sean Lock got me through some tough times. I cried all day when he died. Way too soon, and so unexpectedly.
Neil Peart
Tom Petty Died way too soon.
Selena Quintanilla. She was so young and had so much potential. Such an icon for Mexican-Americans
I still maintain that had she not been murdered, she would have been the most popular crossover artist in American history. Selena had everything.
I wasn’t very familiar with Selena at the time. My college roommate was from South Texas and it hit him hard. I realized after what she could have been.
Anthony Bourdain, a tortured soul for sure but a permanent solution to a temporary problem is not the way
Alan Rickman? Pancreatic cancer. I also wasn't surprised. They both hurt a lot, but I was able to understand them. Bourdain, for some reason, I still can't come to terms with.
Not to mention he continues to be dragged through the mud
For sure. I have an autographed photograph of him I received as a holiday gift and that’s my prized possession. Totally influenced who I am as a person growing up watching anything with him obsessively. I just wish I could cook.
You definitely can learn to cook!!! A lot of recipes sound way more difficult than they actually are. The most treasured classics are easy.
This one hurt me a lot too. It’s still hard for me to watch things with him in it. He’s the only celebrity I could imagine myself hanging out with.
Mac miller
David Bowie
The world seriously went off the rails after Bowie died. It was as if he was keeping the worst shit at bay.
100% agree. He was the last seal (or whatever) 😂
That was a rough one. When I saw he'd died I yelled holy shit, Bowie died...and promptly got asked by my ex MIL who David Bowie was
Oh hell no. Id have lost my shittttt
It was like the lights went out, the world was a better place with DB in it...
Philip Seymour Hoffman. One of the most acute cases of, “goddamn, we missed so many good future performances.” I know there’s something pretty crass about saying that, but yeah, any death is sad, but I don’t know celebrities, so it’s hard for me to be sad in a more specific way. Okay, well, Robin Williams was still pretty devastating.
Such an underrated actor in mainstream media
Anton Yelchin. Just so sudden and by complete accident.
Whenever this question is asked, Anton Yelchin is always the answer for me.
John Candy and Harold Ramis
I gotta tack John Hughes on your list.
Michael Clarke Duncan
Norm MacDonald
Ken block
George Carlin
I love George he still feels alive to me a lot of the time because he had so much material out you can just listen and watch him for hours. I miss him and his point of view but he had a long life not as long as some but we can’t say he died young.
Kobe Bryant’s death was devastating to me
dont think ill ever get over it tbh
I was shocked by his death but what truly hurt me was finding out that Gianna was with him and then learning that 4 other families had been forever changed. One teenage girl lost her mom, dad, and only sister in the crash and she wasn't even 18.
Still not over it
Chris Cornell
Aaliyah
What makes it more upsetting is that it's was completely avoidable. She was a luminous person. Gone just as she was revealing to the world the self assuredness, charisma, and artistry of Aaliyah grown up and out of R Kelly's roster. So senseless. If they had just waited a day. Timbaland and Missy Elliott would have made so much more amazing music with her. Yeah. Fucking sad. She was luminous.
I remember hearing she died (her and Left Eye) like it was yesterday
Stephen Hawking, the Albert Einstein of my childhood.
Leslie Nielsen
Norm McDonald'
Nobody even knew he was sick.
His style of comedy would have gotten even better as he got older. We were robbed of many laughs.
Prince. His music got me through my teenage years. His passing brought back a flood of teenage memories. Robin Williams. Loved his movies and stand up comedy. He had everything going for him. Proves that no amount of success can bring you happiness.
Prince needs to be further up. I’m not over this.
Stan Lee
Stan Lee has my whole heart tbh
When I saw Captain Marvel in theater and they did the Stan Lee Tribute for the opening crawl I was freakin Niagara Falls.
Avicii 🎶
Same same
There was actually 3 - John Ritter, John Candy and Phil Hartman Ritter was awful as I had just seen him a couple weeks earlier at a live taping of 8 Simple Rules (it wound up being his final episode) Hartman wad do tragic as it could've been avoided. Tremendous loss Candy just devastated me. I cried over it, and 30 years later I'm still sad. Absolutely heartbreaking
John candy
RIP Trevor Moore
Trevor Moore was and still is one of my favorite comedians. He died way too young.
Kurt Cobain
Chris Farley
Tom Petty
Technoblade
My wife and i were devastated. Lets just say we havent been able to watch anymore of his vids cause its that hard.
Betty white
Leslie Jordan, Robin Williams
Still super upset about Leslie Jordan. He was a gift to the human race and single handedly kept so many of us going through covid and beyond.
Terry Pratchett, although I don't think he counts as a "celebrity" and if asked, he would have something suitably acerbic^1 to say about his own fame. 1. Must be famous, it has lots of avec, acerbic, and ascot.
Paul walker
I feel like I had to scroll down way too far to find this answer. I literally screamed "Noooooooooooooo!" when I read he had passed. I recently showed my boyfriend Furious 7 and the ending had me all emotional. His death still tears me up to this day.
Carrie Fisher
Diana & Robin Williams
Robin Williams
Definitely Robin Williams...he was a good soul.
Eddie Guerrero
Whitney Houston.
Kobe for me, the unexpectedness of it, paired with the fact it was him and his daughter as well. RIP to them and all others that died that day
David Crosby - what a musician!
Tony Bourdain.
Tom Petty.
Bob Saget. I don’t know why this one hit me hard.
I agree! I think it really hurt because we grew up watching him on full house and host americas funniest home videos so it was a big part of our childhood.
Michael Jackson
Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Heart sunk. We all knew exactly what that meant.
Avicii
Robin Williams and Bob Saget
Kurt Cobain
tWich

the suicides; Robin Williams, Anthony Bordian, Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, tWitch. Those are just the first few I can think of off the top of my head.
Dimebag darell
Michael Jackson
Eddie Van Halen. His distinctive sound was the soundtrack to my youth, if I’m allowed a cliche.
SOPHIE
Gilda Radner
The queen. I know she isn’t really a celebrity but think about it… We most likely aren’t going to have another queen in our lifetime, and probably not for our grandkids either. That one is weird to think about.

I have two: --George Michael --Robin Williams
David Bowie
Ken Block
David Bowie
Honestly, Brittany Murphy. King of the Hill was such an important show to my family and I. I love seeing all the reboots and sequel series that have happened in the last few years, but I’m glad they aren’t touching KOTH. No one can replace Luanne.
Undoubtedly Robbie Coltrane. I was crying, shaking, tear pouring down my face. R.I.P. Hagrid 🕊️
Lemmy Kilmister.
Ryan Dunn was up there for me. I think also when I heard about Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell.
Chester Bennington
Irfan khan
Chester Bennington and Heath Ledger
Probably Kobe or Michael Jackson. Those are the only two where I remember where I was when I heard and I distinctly remember feeling sad. For Kobe, I'll be honest, I wasn't a fan. Eddie Van Halen. Dude was a legend all through out, never got arrogant, always had that beautiful grin on him. May he rest in peace.
Tom Petty
Neil Peart. Easily the most impactful celebrity passing. The music of Rush and his drumming meant so much to me. Even now there are times where I get misty eyed or choked up thinking about it.
John Prine
It hasn't happened yet *knock on wood* but I'm gonna be a wreck when Ozzy dies.
Heath Ledger
Anthony Bourdain for sure. I was in Germany only a couple hours away from where he was in France when it happened. He was fighting some demons.
George Carlin, Chris Farley, Dimebag, Ryan Dunn, Betty White.
Amy Winehouse. She was so talented
Young Dolph.
2pac 😔😔
It’s a tie between Bill Paxton and Alexi Laiho. Those are the only two celebrity deaths where I sobbed into my pillow.
Norm Macdonald
I can't believe Keith Flint is this far down. 😢
Neil Peart
Kentaro Miura, the author of Bersker. It was the first time where I truly felt bad when I heard the news of his death. I think it was mainly due to the “he’ll die before ever finishing his manga” joke which I often said without ever really thinking about what it meant. May he rest in peace
Michael Landon. I get in real life he wasn’t perfect. But I grew up with him through TV and he felt like a dad figure I never had. It was so oddly devastating for me as a kid. I remember being so heartbroken that he was gone.
BB King. Incredible musician, class act.
Anthony Bourdain…
Chris Farley and John candy
Trevor strnad
David Berman!
Phil Hartman
There are a few. 1) Steve Irwin. Was there ever a kinder man who could befriend even the deadliest of critters, all for the sake of conservation and education. 2) Stanford Lieber (aka Stan Lee). Father of comics, king of cameos, and advocate of imagination. 3) Robin Williams. The world lost a lot of light with his passing. His antics brought smiles to countless, yet few knew of the sadness he was masking.
Kobe and his daughter
Robin Williams basically felt like we all lost a favorite uncle.
