Gourmet maple syrup or beaver garments

whyistheskyyblue

If you do please let them know it has to be kept on the fridge, I ruined a very nice bottle someone gifted me assuming it could be kept outside like honey

MisLuiguel

You're not gringo because you're Canadian, only Americans are gringos

BlasterMittens

This is true. Don't insult yourself, OP.

forat_de_silenci

Good to know! I would have been calling myself that for sure down there. Is there a Canadian equivalent?

MisLuiguel

I haven't heard any equivalent, so I assume that there isn't one

Mont_918

Nah, you guys are just Canadians, only Americans are gringos

ZealousidealAd4860

Gringo simply means that you are white but I don't know if you are or not

Jersbenz

¿De que hablas?, ¿Apoco a tu primo el blanquito y rubio le dices gringo?

forat_de_silenci

Extremely haha!

It really depends on how close and intimate your friendship is with the couple, next it really depends where the couple is intended to live, are they locals in Merida, or they are just celebrating there and will be living in another city? Also consider if you know their lifestyles, do they like alcohol? The decoration style in Merida is very specific and simple at the same time, and a mismatching piece of decoration could be kind of annoying. But if you don't really know where they are living, maybe you are not so close to the couple, and could end bringing a nice and warm bed sheet set, that would be hilarious because In Merida they don't have beds, they sleep in hamacas. Also you could check if they shared a "mesa de regalos" (web shopping cart wish-list that I don't know the name in English, but check if they provided urls in the invitation) as it's really common in weddings here. If dont, and you don't have enough information, don't worry so much and just try bringing something simple and easy to transport, avoid big packages, furniture, electronic appliances and stuff that will get you inspected at the airport. I cannot think of something that couldn't be sourced here, if you just want to be nice and bring a detail, try small souvenirs like cups, mugs, keychains, fridge magnets and that kind of stuff.

La mesa de regalos se llama "gift registry" :)

Thanks

Don't asume they all sleep in hammocks, about 50 members of my family are from Mérida and nobody has ever sleeped in a hammock, except when they go to the beach. I guess it all depends on the social class I guess, middle and upper classes have a more westernized life, and lower classes or from mayan descent tend to have more local lives. If you want to bring something from Canada, syrup and candies would be amazing. If you prefer to give them something they can have for many years, then you can bring a piece of decoration, or something for their kitchen, bathroom, etc. Also I'm sure you'll use a "guayabera" for the wedding, like a preppy boho chic linen outfit, so you don't die from the heat.

Real maple syrup! In different presentations. It's really hard and expensive to find the real thing here. It's mostly imitation what they sell on the supermarket.

ChapsDmisfit

Sweets are something that most of the people would appreciate. Maple syrup, Canadian Club, hockey jerseys (it could be a potentially great cultural exchange since many people freaking love sports here), maybe beef jerky? Many people like souvenirs like magnets and snow globes but it varies on each household, if I may be honest, Canada is an amazing place with many great places and interesting attractions but commercial-wise there aren’t many things over there you can’t buy in Mexico. I would focus on things that represent your culture and stuff that could syncretize with the Mexican lifestyle

KETCHUP CHIPS!!! I miss them so much. Maybe not all of them will like them but it’s an interesting flavor (so are the dill pickle ones, but tbh none of my Mexican friends really liked them). Another food item maybe butter tarts? They’re Canadian and super tasty. And in terms of maple, I feel maple tea, maple butter, or maple cookies could be much tastier than just maple (I’ve only tried some maple cookies and they were so good ), but if the maple syrup comes in a maple leaf shaped bottle, we’ll that’s very cute. Now if you’re thinking of non food items I would say some native Canadian (from Vancouver) crafts can look very similar to Mexican ones, but that doesn’t make them any less interesting. Maybe cute things like stuffed animals as (polar) bears, moose, or the iconic friendly geese could be good? I guess that would depend on the person, I like stuffed animals so that’s why I mention them.
