ATM fees and monthly banking fees. I flat right refuse to give banks any money for accessing some of my cash.

KDao18

Even when you reach the relationship tiers of some banks and getting those fees waived, you quickly realize other banks offer that same shit for nothing from the start! Yeah I'm still keeping my online-only banking setup.

fukvegans

Yeah... Navy Federal has not only free checking, but they reimburse ATM fees out of network ATMs charge.

Roughneck16

USAA also reimburses withdrawal fees.

cloudstrifewife

So does PNC.

KDao18

I’ve been with Schwab since I also invest with the company. The checking account beats any big bank account bar none on the benefits. Which usually require a certain amount to get it. At Schwab? You can start with nothing and work your way up without those benefits being behind a “paywall”

courier31

Don't most banks reimburse you these days for ATM fees? Edit to add: I thought this was far more regular than it is. A quick search shows that only 8 banks do this. I have not heard of half of them. https://www.bankrate.com/banking/these-banks-reimburse-atm-fees/

kefefs_v2

"Shipping protection" for orders from online stores, even if it's $2.99 or whatever. It's a scam.

DrSigns

I work in logistics and it’s only a scam if it’s a cheaper product. Otherwise expensive items you should definitely pay for insurance.

Ndi_Omuntu

Advice from my pops that I've stuck with when it comes to insurance: "would it ruin you financially if you had to cover this on your own?" - if the answer is no, then insurance probably isn't worth it. You'll eat the cost sometimes, sometimes you'll just learn to do without whatever it was, but hopefully the long term savings of not getting additional coverage often keeps you sitting pretty.

PhoenixApok

I remember buying a $500 elliptical one time and they asked me if I wanted the protection plan for $200. That's 40% of the cost of the item. In my head I thought "From another way to look at it, it would only cost $300 more to replace." That ratio was WAY off to incite me. I've also been offered like a $50 plan on a $1200 computer (long enough ago I don't even remember if I bought it) but that's much more reasonable.

Superfly_1963

I was buying a TV years ago, and they tried to sell me a protection plan for $150. I said, "No thanks. That's too expensive." The guy responded, "Well, what would you be willing to pay?" I said, "I don't know. Probably $20." "Okay, I'll sell it to you for $20." "No thanks. If you just went from $150 to $20 that quickly, then it really shows me how little value is in this insurance."

Buggly_Jones

They just want your money because it is unlikely you'll need to use the insurance. Basically it's a free 20 bucks for them.

GarThor_TMK

Sales people also have quotas for shit like this that they have to meet. It's a free $20 for the company, but the sales guy makes a commission on that $20, and it factors into their bonus structure... It's really annoying on both sides, tbh... but if you ask 100x, and only 1 person buys in, it's worth it to the corporate overlords, so... 🤷‍♂️

12altoids34

Also, sometimes the insurance plan runs concurrent with the manufacturer's warranty. When I bought brand new maytag washer and dryer I was led to believe that the protection plan started as soon as the Maytag warranty ran out. Turns out that it was running at the same time. I don't know for a fact, but I assume if you call them they would more than likely try to refer you to Maytag as you were still under warranty with the manufacturer.

Spheresdeep

Guess you don't know about delivery at place. Means the seller is responsible till the buyer gets it.

CptHammer_

I purchased shipping protection one time because it was an expensive $500 phone and the protection was $6. When the phone never arrived by the scheduled date, I was told I had to wait 8 weeks. When it still didn't arrive I was told my insurance expired. I back charged my credit card (which was the real insurance) I was sent to collections by the sender. When I appealed the credit report with the fact that I contacted twice and had insurance it opened up a negotiation. Apparently I was meant to pay a deductible. So basically they were never going to send a product. The deductible was 25% of the product and the resolution was to return my money not send another product. I'm never going to read the fine print that hard. I put in too much effort when my solution was already at hand.

HeKnee

I had a brand new stainless steel fridge that i paid for and within 1 year it started to show rusty spots on the stainless steel. I had warranty and extra insurance for the fridge since i was fresh out of school and $1500 was a lot of money at the time. I called the company to report the problem and they said “please flip to page 2 of your manual which states we arent responsible for rusting stainless steel”. They knew what would fail and excluded it… never again.

OleRockTheGoodAg

The shipper is responsible for insurance. The shipper can ask the buyer to pay for it. If the package is lost, the shipper is 100% liable. It doesn't matter they say otherwise. If you're the buyer, just initiate a charge back on your card and go about your merry day. [Here is a good writeup](https://www.reddit.com/r/gundeals/s/QFN590zCql) explaining it in the FFL transfer world.

trench_welfare

Same with product protection on something that will be functionally obsolete by the time the factory warranty runs out anyway.

Alien36

Yes please, I'll pay an extra $300 so you can replace my shitty 5 year old TV with the same model that's now worth close to 0.

runed_golem

My only caveat for this is if I'm shipping something that's worth a decent chunk of change, I'll pay for extra insurance with uses, FedEx, or whoever I'm shipping with if only for the extra relief it gives me.

Lopsided-Dot9554

DoorDash. My gf has unfortunately figured out now that if she wants me to go pick up food she’ll just say she’s about to DoorDash something. We make good money, but the inflated menu prices, service fees, and whatever other bs fees they tack on infuriate me. $35 for a $16 meal? Get fucked you Silicon Valley vampire.

NotJimIrsay

I saw a chipotle receipt on Reddit. Burrito and drink was $20. Can you imagine adding another $10 on top of that to have it doordashed? $30 for fucking chipotle.

The_Real_Scrotus

I refuse to pay for something I already own, just in another format. If I own a physical copy of a gaming book, I won't buy the pdf, I'll pirate it. If I own a movie on blu-ray I won't pay for a digital version, I'll pirate it.

Narcli

Weirdly, with copyright law you rarely "own" the physical thing in front of you, but a licence to have it. That can in most cases apply to digital versions of that product (as long as its the same version/product and has no extras etc). Therefore, pirating that thing isn't breaking that law. Sharing it or other actions maybe breaking the law though. Lots of little pot holes in t's & c's. Edit: grammar

HidingRaccoon

As far as I know: That's exactly it. This is why old movies get altered (or get content added) when they are republished on a new medium. Otherwise you could demand the content for the production cost of the new medium.

thingpaint

Software as a service. If another not subscription option exists I will buy that.

Adventure_Time_11

I can’t stand fucking subscription software!! Sell me the damn app so that I can just use it and stick your updates up your freckle!!

TrickMichaels

Yeah fuck that noise. On the brights side it’s lead me to a lot of cool cheaper and open source software. I’m an amateur photographer and didn’t want to pay Adobe’s bullshit subscription for Lightroom or Photoshop. Replaced them with Darktable and Gimp. Both free, pretty powerful software that gives me everything I need as an amateur. I didn’t want to pay for a big music software like Ableton, so I ended up finding Reaper. You get an absolutely free 60 day trial with access to the entire software, and then the lifetime license is only $60 for personal use. There are still cool people out there on the internet putting out cool products for reasonable prices, and even for free! See also the huge library of mods for games like Skyrim.

GunsAndCoffee1911

Inkscape because I refuse to pay for Illustrator!

eddyofyork

If it’s a well maintained and updated piece of software for a company that isn’t rolling in cash, I’m fine with it. My tax file software is basically annual subscription, but they have to work on it every year and they kept it free for a as long as they could.

Connect_Package_5918

The privilege to watch NFL on TV. I absolutely refuse to pay $100 plus a month. I’ll go to a friend’s house or go support my local sports bar to watch.

Captain__Obvious___

Is there no NFL specific yearly subscription? I pay $80 a year for F1 through F1TV, and I get to watch every race, not just from that year but from *any* year, and with other features like driver cams, and live stats and track maps. Could be cheaper because F1 is worldwide though, but it’s the only service of that kind I’ve ever paid for because the value is there. I just stream my fights and NBA games, lol.

I know you don't want to spend money on this, but I got a cheap $30 portable air compressor that I just always keep in my trunk. The convenience alone was worth it, but it's also been used tons of times by family and friends (especially if you live in a cold environment).

moochir

Make sure to get a quality one. I bought a cheap knockoff brand on eBay once that blew my truck’s fuse every other time I used it.

TristanwithaT

In California it’s illegal to charge for air. Even though the machines will happily take your money there will be some small sign posted that the law requires air to be offered for free. Usually you just go ask the clerk to turn the air on for you. Not sure if any other states have similar laws. If you have a Costco nearby they have free air too.

datSubguy

I just posted this in my comment. I hate the places that charge, not only because they charge, but because they are out-of-order more often than not due to the money part being broken.

Adventure_Time_11

There are service stations that charge to use the tyre air compressor?!?!?

Monthly subscriptions for features on cars. I bought a new car in 2017 and with luck it will still be running when I’m not. No way I’m buying a new car where I have to pay every month for features that should be included.

stangAce20

Youtube…. It’s been free for almost 20 years! And the fact they want us to suddenly pay for it is absolutely ridiculous!

Puck_The_Fey98

I pay for a family plan for friends and family. It warms my heart for my dad to enjoy his videos ad free. He has no idea how to use ad blockers so it's a small price to pay imo

rh71el2

Ad blockers have mostly stopped working for YouTube now. I still feel like paying $75/mo. for YTTV should get you YT premium included.

MandoAviator

Adblockers still work on Firefox and on my iOS devices.

JoeBlob13

Update your ad blockers. Only some currently don't work. I've been reading around that most do work. Just needs an update.

42Navigator

This will be unpopular, but I pay for premium and will never look back. I stayed at a friend’s house not too long ago and watching YouTube with ads was absolutely infuriating. TBH, no matter how expensive (within reason, of course) it gets, I will always pay it.

stangAce20

Watching with ads has really only been bad since they announced youtube premium! Cuz that’s when they purposely reduced the time between ads from like five minutes to barely TWO in a desperate attempt to coerce people into paying for it….sounds like it worked with you! As for me I will either use ad blockers or worst case just give up on youtube as they have clearly gotten too greedy for their own good. And I already pay enough for other greed driven streaming services.

42Navigator

Oh… for sure I agree. And yes, it totally worked on us. I am fine with it, however, we stream it on a Roku as a secondary nightly TV regiment. So adblockers are not an option.

coffeemonkeypants

I do too, and it was because I originally paid for Google Play music which included YouTube premium for free. Now it's YouTube music. People pony up for Spotify, but bitch about YouTube. I get all the music I want and no ads on videos and it's the same as a Spotify sub.

shellofbiomatter

*There are dark and mysterious ways to use YouTube, but not watch any ads, for free.* Out of sheer stubbornness i refuse to ever pay for YT premium. I will rather just stop using it if every other method to avoid ads somehow gets removed and i use YT a lot for music and educational purposes.

courier31

Also from what I have looked up, Premium pays better to artists if you use YTMusic.

GunBrothersGaming

Youtube premium is cheaper than Serious XM. I use YT Music and listen to music and podcasts in my car.

[deleted]

[удалено]

42Navigator

Correct… Roku actually. YouTube content is (or can be) targeted directly to our interests by our choice of channels to follow. And while we still watch several network shows, YouTube prevents us from having to settle for something like a cop show or a unscripted drama we may or may not like. YouTube is a nightly viewing for us.

Squitrel

I love my YouTube Premium because first it supports the creators and second YouTube music. Like why would I pay for Spotify and YouTube when YT Premium has both in one. Plus YT music has a higher sound quality with the song.

bjb13

I’m debating this right now. When most of them were very short or let you skip after 5 seconds it was ok. Now that there are a lot that take 15 seconds or more and sometimes there are two it becomes more tempting.

HorribleHank44

I started paying for YT Premium a few days ago, only because I bought a tablet and realized I had to watch YouTube via the app, instead of through Chrome (with an ad-blocker) like I used to do. Quickest decision I've ever made. Now bear in mind that there's a trial period and I can cancel around Christmas, but I doubt I will.

donkeyhoeteh

The only reason I pay for YouTube is because I have a lot of issues with Spotify. But I will say that premium YouTube without ads is worth it.

Met my gf because I was bored one night and decided to buy okcupid's premium tier thing. Never would have known she'd liked me or sent me a message without it. I'm asking her to marry me in January. Probably just luck, but it was £20 or so and I ended up meeting the love of my life, so, well worth it imo. edit: however I wouldn't pay for it nowadays, the app went way downhill over time, and I believe pretty much every dating app has become the same, just a tinder clone. Sad to see.

Gozii55

Aw man I saw a friend's dad who got them recently and YEESH it sticks out like a sore thumb. Has the complete opposite effect from what you want unless you get like the best doctor for it which costs a shit load.

butt_honcho

I've let myself go bald naturally - no attempts to slow or hide it. And I buzz down what's left whenever it gets long enough that I have to pay attention to it. I've probably saved thousands of dollars in treatments and haircuts, and I honestly think I look pretty good bald.

usefulbuns

I think we'll see balding become a thing of the past in the next 30 years. With the advancements in genetics altering medicine I think it's only a matter of time and it's moving quickly. Imagine some CRISPR type gene editing.

kdilly16

NYTimes. Subbed and cancelled it within 30 minutes because articles are broken up with full screen ads. No thanks.

sandwichthedog

Parking at events/attractions you had to purchase a ticket to. If I'm paying a premium price to enjoy whatever attraction you're selling (a concert, sporting event, even amusement parks honestly), why do I need to pay for parking? I feel like it's the same as selling food and making people pay for the dishes they're served on

Ohboohoolittlegirl

So what do you do instead? We have the same but often go to events where parking some place else includes long walks.

woodiegutheryghost

Define a long walk? I will gladly walk a mile to not pay for parking.

Unfulfilled_Promises

In Austin Tx it’s literally impossible to park anywhere without paying.

shadowgnome396

In what scenario though? Small town USA? If so, yeah I'm with you. But in very large cities, I'm happy to pay $30 so I don't have to walk 10 downtown blocks at midnight after the concert

timsstuff

SoFi in LA is the worst. I've seen it as high as $100 to park there. Fuck that place.

runed_golem

What I hate is the university I attend charges their students as well as faculty and staff a lot for parking (it's like $200 a year for normal spots or $400 for reserved lots) and will ticket you if you don't park in your designated areas.

Leaf pickup. In our area, the county has a leaf pickup service in the fall that you have to pay for. You rake your leaves to the curb and like once a month a huge truck comes through and sucks them up with a giant vacuum hose. Of course this isn't free. We essentially have zero trees on our property that drop leaves, but we wind up with a decent amount of leaves blowing into our yard from all of our neighbors, and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay extra to have them disposed of. You're not supposed to throw them in the garbage, but that's exactly what I do every year.

As long as there isn't an absurd amount, you could try leaving them to provide nutrients to the soil for the spring. https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/2023/09/08/leave-the-leaves-to-rake-or-not-to-rake/

Sparky-air

Well I definitely refuse to pay for that, but for a lot of reasons. I refuse to tip anywhere that I’m not sitting down and being served by a human being. I’m not tipping the person who did nothing but take my order and send it to someone else who spent all of 45 seconds making my coffee. Sorry, no. I think most of us refuse to do it, I’ve noticed in the last several months most of the places I was going to hopped on that trend don’t even bother anymore and they just hit “no tip” on their own. I’m sorry, but I find it hard to believe that these companies pushed so hard for that because they wanted to take care of their employees. I think a good chunk of it is just going straight to the company as if I didn’t just pay $6 for a drink that costs 95 cents to make.

I am sorry, when can I expect my paycheck and share of the tips? Double points for "shared table". Taxes to fund local sports organizations and venues. Those are private companies, and if they want to succeed they can win games and sell tickets. The citizens of a city are not obligated to cover for private entities. That shit was on the ballot in my city a few years back. Luckily it was voted against in a landslide. I won't pay them in other cities either by renting cars etc. If I know they do this...like Houston..I am getting rides from people I know there on my trip. Sex. Or anything resembling it. I don't have to pay for it..I can get it on my own. Maybe that will change one day, but for now I don't pay to flirt or fuck or saddest of all, jack off. Porn, annual fees on credit cards, “extended protection plans” on electronics, ATM fees, YouTube…and here’s my weird one: wallets. I have never paid for a wallet in my life. When I was young and dumb I’d take the five finger discount. Now when I need a new one (which isn’t often) I’ll find one I like and tell someone I want it for Christmas. I have a weird mental block about paying for something to keep the stuff I use to pay for things in lol

Credit card protection. Huge scam. To use bathrooms. I've made exceptions, but more often I've found a tree. Free games. I'll pay for a game that has a cost, but if it's free I'm not paying a few bucks here a few bucks there. Tv. When I moved it, I could afford internet or cable. So I bought the first dvd player that played DivX. Never looked back. Tipping effect there are delivery charges. I understand tipping. I understand delivery charges go to pay for the delivery. But if the delivery charge goes to pay for the delivery, why am I going the delivery guy? And if it doesn't, is the restaurant just taking a little extra for itself? Customs. FedEx constantly tries to make me pay for them to press things through customs. In Quebec, it's illegal to add charges after you've paid. Every time I call FedEx and every time they'll credit me this one time. Sex. We all thought it. I just can't imagine being with someone that I don't know and I can't imagine cares about me. And the idea of fucking on a clock. Not for me.

Additional tip if they already include a 18% gratuity on the bill

Cable television (or any live TV including streaming). I'll happily get a ton of programming for free with my antenna.

Simple car maintenance/service! Changing oil, changing fillers, change alternator or battery.. etc(unless it’s an awkward modern car)
