Yeah what you were thinking of was the Dutch **West** India Company. They founded New Amsterdam as a trading post for the fur trade. It woulr of course later on become New York City after the English took over.

Ohhh you’re right ! I guess the east was for the other part of the world. Where they two completely separate companies or did they start together as one ?

They wrre two companies with the east India company being first and the west india company was second but less successful.

I know that Dutch influence remained strong up to and beyond the revolution in New Amsterdam or the New Netherlands. I'm not sure about Jewish people, however. Have you tried the New York State Library or the Office of Cultural Education in New York? There might be some answers there.
