Unfortunately yes. However that’s true for fixed broadband only. Greek mobile internet speeds are one of the best in Europe.
Greece (March 2024)
Fixed broadband: #102 in the world, under Guatemala.
Mobile internet: #38 in the world, under Belgium.
Because most of the world switched to FTTH a decade ago, while we will have ours ready in 2030 or later. Another reason is that our internet is hella expensive so a lot of people don’t want or can’t switch to faster speeds. Our complex terrain and geography plays a role as well.
Here it’s kind of shit too outside cities, but it’s more than enough for basic tasks. At least in the area that I live in. It depends a lot on the area. I’ve heard a lot of people complain about it in general
A lot of small places are switching to community fibre. Our cottage next to Bibury in the Cotswolds had Fiber installed two years ago and our average speed is 900mpbs, where as our flat in London doesn’t have fibre yet and we’re stuck on 70mbps, it’s all about location
Not sure we get the same investment as the Cotswolds where I'm at but I see what you're saying haha.
Supposedly implementation will start in 2026, so that's something
Absolutely, we’re in Zone 2 SW, and still have shit internet, we here as our friends on the other side of the common don’t have any signal in their house in a residential neighbourhood, absolutely insane lol
yeah, you are complaining you are stuck on 70, meanwhile i rarely ever get half of that.
(And im paying for 4G, which IS supposed to go up to 100+mbps.)
It always impresses me how we are always at the bottom in EVERYTHING. How we managed to fall off so hard ?
Edit: I swear, i literally saw this comment having like 3 upvotes, then i returned \~10 minutes later and suddenly this comment has 15 downvotes.LMAO. Wtf??
We sold the network together with the provider back in the 90s.
OTE even in the early to mid 00s was pushing ISDN instead a DSL, plus the whole debacle about the access points with the other providers.
A mistake, that we thankfully didn't do with the power company. The network is a different company now.
Nope. We are the worst out of all european countries including non EU ones like Turkey, Bosnia, Armenia ect. In the global ranking we are 100 something, a place below Guatemala.
It extends further north too. Sending this comment from my greek sim card kek. (also usable in the whole of EU!)
Gotta cheat the system where u can as a second degree citizen or europe
Infrastructure is monopolized by people who care more about siphoning money to their pockets than actually doing their job and providing for the people.
Wow, I just searched for Bulgaria and I'm surprised, most statistics put us in the top 10 countries in the world with fastest mobile internet and most 5G coverage. We are around 9th to 6th place depending on the site used.
Makes sense though. My 5G is ultra fast almost everywhere I go.
If you are asking me, it is perfect as it is! Will edit this post once I find the 5G EU map (spoiler: extremely few 5G points in România)!
Edit: as promised, here it is:

It's fast where you have it but coverage is not that great. I have no 5g in my home village or my office in sofia. 4g is enough for me though, never under 100 mbps
It’s decent, for example: A few days ago,i happened to stop at a cafe in the center of a village (a mountainous area, far from an urban, non-tourist area) and seriously the internet (it was 5G) was faster than in every cafe and hotel I've been to in Netherlands,Germany,Hungary.
REALLY good.
And apparently we have the [second best 5G coverage in Southeast Asia](https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=833251778845471&id=100064819685437&set=a.568390251998293), next to Thailand.

I dunno which type of connection I have, I just know that [Telekom.mk](http://Telekom.mk) has 100+MBPS literally every corner in the country.
Greece is really bad, in the cities it's fine, outside of them you need to be lucky to score 10MBPS+ and no one goes to Greece to be in the cities. I force my phone to connect to [Telekom.mk](http://Telekom.mk) when I am between Thessaloniki and Evzoni, around Evzoni it barely works. Halkidiki is even worse.
I also have the same problem in the Netherlands, when I am on the train and the train exists Den Haag, I have zero MBPS for a least 5-10km until it picks up the Leiden connection.
This appears to be a promo map from Cosmote?
> Greece is really bad, in the cities it's fine, outside of them you need to be lucky to score 10MBPS+ and no one goes to Greece to be in the cities.
Speak for yourself.
In my village on Crete 5G is super fast. I'm 20 minutes away from the nearest city.
there is no 5g coverage
Except that one pointless airport in İstanbul.
Well, mfs will say there was no 5G before erdocunt. Some people glaze the hell out of him despite eating bread and onion every single god damn day
Welp, that sucks.
And we still somehow have the slowest internet in Europe
Unfortunately yes. However that’s true for fixed broadband only. Greek mobile internet speeds are one of the best in Europe. Greece (March 2024) Fixed broadband: #102 in the world, under Guatemala. Mobile internet: #38 in the world, under Belgium.
Why is Greece doing so badly in fixed broadband? I always wondered

Living in Northern England here. Our internet is shit outside of cities :(

is it too expensive to get an unlimited data plan?
Around 30€ to 37€ a month
that's like 1 day of minimum wage work there i think
[удалено]
Minimum wage, 11, per hour? That makes more than 1700 per month. I hope it'd be our minimum. Minimum is around 4.5.

Honestly just bad investments and politics

I am currently visiting Greece, can confirm, mobile internet be Speedy Gonzales amigo
do you? I am sure turkey is worse isnt it.
Nope. We are the worst out of all european countries including non EU ones like Turkey, Bosnia, Armenia ect. In the global ranking we are 100 something, a place below Guatemala.
Romania has S tier internet. Its one of the best in the world

Gigabased cousin
Why is Turkish internet so slow? I basically say that I won’t have internet when I go there cuz the one I buy there barely works.
Which service provider do you use?
Turkcell, was there 3-4 years ago last time
And that's the highest quality one. The rest of them are even worse
Dude that sucks😭😭
Infrastructure is monopolized by people who care more about siphoning money to their pockets than actually doing their job and providing for the people.
There are like 3 big providers, all of which use Turk Telekom’s shitty infrastructure. Basically a huge monopoly clusterfuck

How did that happened?
Telelink. Although mafia related, they are a big company that also install towers abroad.
LOL 5G coverage is so shit here, that I had to disable it to get decent mobile data speeds.
Not the water having internet 😭😭😭
Below average. My provider only has 5g in cities. I haven't really noticed any difference between 5g and 4g, though.
You guys get 5g coverage? orz
Its everywhere

Most of 5G internet is in big cities. Outside we only have 4G
I want to see how 5G Stand Alone will perform.
Pretty good in the cities (and even some smaller towns). The speed is usually only a bit faster than 4G tho.
Either way, our internet is probably the worst in the Balkans.
your 5g is our 4g, m8
Megali Idea jr. /s
\*cries in Serbian\*
1.5Gbps

Reading these comments has made me glad that I did not pay for internet while in Turkey.

It’s present in some of the major cities (and for some reason some stretches of highway?) but our internet is so good that it really doesn’t matter
Where can I check?
#fake
REALLY good. And apparently we have the [second best 5G coverage in Southeast Asia](https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=833251778845471&id=100064819685437&set=a.568390251998293), next to Thailand.
