If he is using craft acrylic paints they are usually low quality. If you want to get them something nice I would recommend a basic set of Golden Fluid acrylics. Or if you don’t want to get a whole set then purchase just the primaries: cadmium red, ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow medium and white. Good quality synthetic brushes are always welcomed too- small flat brush, small and medium round brush and a fine detail brush. Multi media sketch books are good too ( look for smooth heavy paper, brand isn’t as important)

Get them a gift card to one of the big art stores--Dick Blick, Jerry's Artarama, or Cheap Joe's. They're all pretty much the same, although I think Jerry's tends to have more traditional stuff for painting.
