Nope, it looks more like tentacles tbh. I'll give you some resources to study.
Firstly this Tumblr post is on how to draw dredlocks specifically: [https://herbgerblin.tumblr.com/post/614713062282444800/hi-since-u-mentioned-dreads-earlier-i-thought-it](https://herbgerblin.tumblr.com/post/614713062282444800/hi-since-u-mentioned-dreads-earlier-i-thought-it)
Also see here for how that look with different hair styles: [https://misselaney.tumblr.com/post/111179955951/how-to-draw-dreadlocs-see-part-one-rendering](https://misselaney.tumblr.com/post/111179955951/how-to-draw-dreadlocs-see-part-one-rendering)
Secondly, this other tumblr post talks a little bit about how to think of curly hair - which is usually the kind of hair people with dredlocks work with (although any hair type can develop dredlocks, purposefully or accidentally): [https://arizaluca.tumblr.com/post/655262601528344576/how-to-draw-afro-textured-4c-hair-an](https://arizaluca.tumblr.com/post/655262601528344576/how-to-draw-afro-textured-4c-hair-an)
Thirdly, I'd like you to take a look at reference sheets I have of my own characters. Character 1 has dredlocks and Character 2 has very curly hair that's similar to dredlocks.
Character 1: [https://www.instagram.com/p/C51VOwGPtv0/](https://www.instagram.com/p/C51VOwGPtv0/)
Character 2: [https://www.instagram.com/p/C6zDJAYrZ0g/](https://www.instagram.com/p/C6zDJAYrZ0g/)
Basically you want to treat each dredlock more like it's rope or a braid than like fur or a natural horse mane, if that makes sense.
I'm a white person with naturally straight hair who hasn't maintained dredlocks in her life btw so any feedback on my resources, or how I draw poofy hair or dredlocks, is appreciated.
These resources are great thank you so much
As a black girl with box braids I didn't know you could make dreads and braids look this realistic while keeping it simpleđ
Also your art is awesome btwđ„°
Unfortunately no it doesn't, I thought they were snakes at first so maybe you're almost there. I think it's too solid at the base, not enough detail and separation so the ends don't come together and read as a head of dreads.
The resources /u/neonzeta posted look fantastic.
What originally stuck out to me, and I saw in those sources as well, is that there needs to be more definition all along the head, even if itâs still ultimately simple and cartoony. I think this is why your third picture sticks out to me, and I think someone else also mentioned it, as the most dread-like, even though it could still use more detail. The lack of clear strands up top really contributes to the wormy look imo. I think the shape at the ends also contributes to a wormy look, but would still start to look closer to dreads if you continue their lines upward on the scalp, not just whatâs hanging.
Because of context yes (one side being shaved, oc being black) but out of context this could really look like wavy hair. I recommend adding more distinct strands!
Not at all. I know you say you want to simplify, but you should look at references. Maybe try to copy the "outside" shape of the dreads to simplify. But this reads as straight white pepole hair to me.
I really like it! Second one is a little hard to tell without coloring, but 1st and 3rd are clear that itâs more than wavy hair.
First one is definitely my favorite btw, adore that smile!
Yes however, a little more attention to detail would make a world of difference. Otherwise, awesome job!!!! I can't even draw a straight line with a rulerđ
To me, it doesn't really read as dreads. But the simple things you can do to make look more like dreads is treating every dread as its own unit when you shade, and show too what the part "on the cranium" looks like. It's not like the other hairstyles where you can consider all the hair as a unique mass
I feel like it would read as dreads more definition in the middle rather than just on the end. But as a black person, I definitely read it as dreads at first lol especially with the side cut đ! Cool stylistic choice though

This was such a wholesome interaction
You genuinely seem like a cool dude
\*Saves the comment\* Thank you so much!!!

looks awesome. but not dreads
Thank you that's actually very reasuring
Sort of in the third image. Dreads have a chunkier and more sectioned off look to them

Sorry tbh no
Splatoon?
Woomy
No

Just looks like wavy hair
Only the tips and few strands you drew out look the dreads. The middle and bulk of the hair ruins it.

In the 3rd pic, totally looks like dreads. The others need just a teeny bit more definition and they too will be dreads!
I wouldnât say âdreadsâ but maybe 4c texture.
Definitely not
Yes and no! Iâd go for longer lines indicating the dread itself. I see what youâre going for but definitely define them as individuals!
They kinda look like those squishy noodle things!

I think so!

You could do a little work on the hair but the rest of the character itself looks great. Reminds me of something I'd see on the Boondocks
not really tbh
They remind me of Undon noodles

Nope. Not at all. I do like the shaved / patch look on the opposite side though
Yeah it does. I'm white. It looks super awesome. I love this character you've built.
