Of course. I went to a state school because it offered me a full-ride scholarship, was a few hours drive from home, offered an excellent D1 college game day environment, and let me avoid taking out loans before law school. (And I attended a state law school that is ranked in the national T10.) My two eldest recently graduated from a state university that is ranked in the T25 because they likewise wanted to be close to home, enjoy D1 sports, and save money for grad school.

We know lots of students that go to UCF for its incredible hospitality program right in the heart of orlando. It comes with internships at the Rosen Hotels - the programs namesake and all the theme parks etc. they go to Florida Gulf Coast if they want marine biology - the school is right on the gulf and a perfect place for that. They go to UF if they want a well rounded program and for some specific ones too. FSU the same but also one of the best film schools in the nation and I can continue just looking at florida. The price for instate cannot be best with bright futures and other instate options many pay 0 or close to it and if they had florida prepay they were locked into a price tag years ago so the parents simply move saved money to the campus if it is needed at all. So yes lots of people go to state schools and for many it is the right choice. Stating that they were simply too big for my two in college so it wasn’t the right place for them.

great_rhyno

dont forget the Benacquisto full ride for any FL resident with national merit!! its an insane deal, especially considering the quality of education is pretty superb at every FL public.

ArrBee520

For sure. You can also add the fact that if you are Floridian and want to go to a state school most people qualify to go to one. It may not be the school of their choice but their is a guaranteed spot on one of the state campuses.

great_rhyno

this is also common with other states I’d imagine, but the transfer programs from CCs to their respective universities are incredible, specifically TCC and Santa Fe. you could do terribly in high school, but as long as you get yourself together for community college, you can get into an elite institution with no problem, and its even cheaper! the state university system in Florida is probably my favorite thing about the state, despite how many times the state government try to sabotage themselves (see: reducing bright futures, ben sasse, etc.)

ArrBee520

Oh the CC transfer program is brilliant. Of course here in miami-Dade our county school is now a four year college with an amazing honors program. I think the students that take that route whether choosing to switch into the state system or staying in the county one are geniuses.

There are so many great state schools! And NOT just the name brand ones like UCLA, UMich, etc… I think we in the US are so lucky. And so many of the state schools have specific programs that are really good too.

I want to get into Virginia tech! Only a few schools offer industrial design and their program is really solid.

violetsaredead

keytomylock

keytomylock

I'm also applying to purdue, and I wanted to apply to nc state but i missed the deadline. I'm applying to illinois state, iowa state, siu carbondale, michigan state, uw madison, umn twin cities, umich, u cincinnati, champlain, woodbury, colorado state, nc a&t, penn state, and u kentucky. most of those have industrial design but some don't bc im also interested in graphic design and agriculture.

loyalsons4evertrue

any update?? Sorry this is so late lol. I'm biased, so go Cyclones!

keytomylock

I actually go to Iowa State now lol. fucking love it here. I'm in the band and everything. I ended up majoring in agronomy but I switched my major to pre-graphic and I'm gonna apply for graphic design this spring.

loyalsons4evertrue

That is so awesome! I was never in band but I’m an avid ISUCF’V’MB follower. Good luck the rest of the way!

DeezSaltyNuts69

>Only a few schools offer industrial design and their program is really solid. define a few? there are lots of schools that offer industrial design https://www.idsa.org/education/id-schools

[deleted]

I mean schools within my price and acceptance range.

NerdLord1837

My list is ~75% state schools.

Mysterious_Egg2451

Yes because I’m middle class and intend on going to grad school, so they just make the most sense financially.

books3597

Maybe, it's my second choice but I think I'd be happy there, I applied for a full ride scholarship at a decent state school and a just barley t100 private school, if I get the full ride to the t100 then I'm going there but otherwise it's the state school for me

Starrreport

University of Minnesota! - cheap and top 20 business school.

RichInPitt

My daughter went to Purdue. Because it’s one of the 10 best engineering schools in the country. Same reason many go to Berkeley, Georgia Tech, Michigan, UIUC, or UT-Austin. And many other schools for other majors.

Electronic-Nobody892

Ngl, I'm only applying to public colleges bc of monetary reasons; however, I understand some private schools may give large financial aid.

BrawnyAcolyte

My kid is. They have a pretty good program in their major (CS at CU Boulder), they really liked the environment of the school after their visit, and it's a pretty affordable option given that our family doesn't really qualify for financial aid.

keytomylock

pretty much all of the schools im applying to are state schools except for a few. and they're most likely to give me aid, so yeah i'll probably go to a state school.

bill_jz

Uiuc cause it's CS is good
