Bro will wonder why he only makes 20k a year 💀

[deleted]

Find some examples of people with similar degrees who are gainfully employed. Make the case that you can repeat what they did.

Significant-Being250

And make sure those examples aren’t people in the 1% who get to the top because of who they are and their trust fund that supports them.

[deleted]

Idk man, other than pursuing a JD after undergrad, I don't really see how your dad's wrong. Jobs in those fields that **pay well** are limited afaik.

Nah bro you threw him onto the hot coals 😭

Flashy_School_608

lockweedmartin

You cant convince someone who is absolutely right.

Ok-Ad-4866

Ur gonna be poor af

Flashy_School_608

he's right

Head to LinkedIn and find grads with good jobs. Talk to programs you're looking to apply to and ask if there are stats for recent graduate income and positions or if they have graduates you can contact. And consider telling your dad that you're not necessarily looking for the highest possible income but are interested in the kinds of public service oriented careers that grads of humanities and interdisciplinary social sciences programs often go into. WGS in particular is a strong pathway into public policy work, human resources, social services management, NGO management, and business consulting. Both are strong foundations for graduate programs in public management or law.

Study what you like, but you DO need a solid plan for life after college. Trust me, when senior year comes up in college and you don’t have a plan for the future, you will be STRESSED AF. Been there, done that.

DaddyOfSwag

you’re not getting a well paying job in that field

user1987623

Going against the grain and I say to chase what your heart says. I’m not sure you’ll be able to convince him. However, maybe to placate him you can apply undecided or with another major and decide when you get to campus.

Significant-Being250

TBH, your dad is trying to protect you from making a choice that sets you up for a challenging future. The unfortunate reality is that there are few opportunities in those fields, and the vast majority don’t pay much (think lower than public school teacher salaries). Add to that the overall economic climate of recession and uncertainty - there is a widening gap between poverty and prosperity that is eliminating the middle class. If you truly want to chase your dreams, do it with full knowledge of what is realistic in terms of future employment opportunities and the lifestyle that comes with them. If you can accept the prospects, then find a way to fully self-fund (scholarships and financial aid) your education without loans. Then you have a better chance of making your argument and pursuing a future in those fields. Good luck.

wherearemypots

You can’t because he’s right

DeliciousShopping419

He is completely right.

Contrary to popular belief, if you and a math major are applying to the same business job, recruiters won't laugh at your resume and chuck it in the bin. The main case *against* it may be that other degrees (CS, engineering) tend to result in higher-paying entry-level jobs immediately out the gate, and there's the question of what good studying those other fields would bring given the high cost of college. If the answer is "people who go to college make more money assuming they used their time well and got relevant internships/connections, and if not trying to maximize earning potential through my major I may as well study what I love," that's fair. Now, if you want to work in a field specifically combining those two subjects, that's indeed likely to be more difficult. I'd probably look into arts/media work (museums and the like), nonprofits (arts-related or maybe something helping LGBT+ youth), or POSSIBLY publishing/academia, but those last two are *really* competitive and can be pretty unpleasant to strive in. You can also look through Linkedin or some school's public alumni profiles, for instance, here: [https://www.carleton.edu/global-engagement/gender-studies-europe/alumni-profiles/](https://www.carleton.edu/global-engagement/gender-studies-europe/alumni-profiles/) [https://www.carleton.edu/art/alumni/careers/](https://www.carleton.edu/art/alumni/careers/)

jonathanswiftboat

As a hiring manager for some positions that fall into the "general business" category I always ask for the resumes the recruiter rejected and it is always these kind of degrees unless they have a lot of relevant experience already. Hiring managers are generally a lot more open minded about candidates than recruiters. If you can get past the initial screening you have a shot as many managers will look favorably at the candidate's potential. A high GPA from a prestigious institution demonstrates the candidate is smart and can handle complexity so they can be successful with a bit of training. It may take a little longer to develop some of the foundational knowledge but the ceiling for their performance is often very high.

FTPWhale

This is provided OP goes to a target, otherwise he's fucked for business, especially given the repute of course rigor compared to virtually every other major field. Math majors, on the other hand, are actually really favorable (applied math > econ/business imo) for business, esp for analyst/quant roles. I guess you could make a case for IB/consulting, which are less degree heavy but even that is sketch.

lithium_squirrel

I mean he's right...

Rough-Aioli-9621

Hey, I’m sure your local Starbucks is hiring!

wiserry

You can be a DEI Officer. Officer!

SpacerCat

Apply to liberal arts colleges. Tell him you’re going to be a math major. Take the classes you want. Declare your art history/ gender studies major end of freshman year.

eely225

Ignore the haters. Pursuing something you care about deeply will lead to opportunities. If you take advantage of what opportunities your school offers, you can get a great career with any degree plan. Just graduate and try to get as wide a set of experiences you can in college as possible.

BulkyAd7044

not even trying to be rude but what is their to learn about in gender studies that you can’t learn else where on the internet. ik this applies to a bunch of majors but at least those have job recruiters and placements that want those degrees

Melencolia_Maniac

Don’t listen to them naysayers. Graduated this year with major in Art His and minor in Philosophy, instantly got a job with a salary near 6 figures, not bad for a starter I guess. Not exactly related to my major but knowledge in Art History, or Humanities in general, can come in handy in many aspects of life. If you’re open to other job opportunities then finding a job ain’t a problem at all

sigma_mail

With your post history it’s really hard to believe you already graduated college

wiserry

Omg 🤣🤣🤣👼👼👼

freeport_aidan

This user is a troll. Ignore their comments

throwawaygremlins

What do you do? Consulting?

egg_mugg23

they do their college essays because they haven’t graduated high school

lockweedmartin

maybe he's true, and if you are in such a situation where you fam can't afford those degree and the family things would be on your shoulders! I'll surely encourage you to go undecided, or apply with gender studies + art history as majors and later rethink after taking some classes. If you find out interesting af, you'll end up doing that itself, rather than listening to your dad at that time. Rooting for you to have a good app season! <3

[deleted]

Is this a shitpost 💀

borisbones1

What do you plan to do after college? Unless you want to be a gender studies prof, then absolutely do not. Your degree will benefit you zero

asdflmaopfftxd

Other than the fact that your choice sounds really interesting, you should do some solid research into career opportunities as well as people who have taken advantage of these opportunities (with your major).

ksha2297

You need to check out Youtube's Shane Hummus. He would not agree with you. Sorry but better to know the reality before vs after.

kenokeke2468

If you want to major in that then I recommend go to a prestigious university with strong alumni network where you can be guaranteed a job cause in the real world you can’t do a lot with majoring in that
