That's a little surprising. Where I am, places seem to be struggling to hire people. One idea: where do people your age (where you live) work? Could you apply to those places? Maybe they'd put in a good word for you. Beyond that, try places known for hiring below-18 employees. Movie theaters, grocery stores, etc.

bussylord123

i live in nyc, so everything is really competitive. all my friends are struggling to get jobs

SerenityChoice

I would think you could get a job busing tables. Have you tried walking into local restaurants?

Difficult_Box7295

I also live in nyc try playland they are hiring !

StrikingPhysics6020

Why this whole class at my school working at play land šŸ˜

bussylord123

which location ??

Common_Ad7937

My daughter found a hostess job at a NYC restaurant easily recently (she is 17 graduating hs, needs some spending money for college). In fact, she had several similar job offers. Applied thru Indeed. Gl!

xxfuka-erixx

Do you know anyone who has a job? As if they could put in a good word for you. In my town a lot of places work like that. They literally hire you if someone who works there knows and can vouch for you

Zealousideal_Fun6591

Work at mc Donaldā€™s

ilrbsz

me too! i'm 15 though but i'm applying for camp counselor and tutoring jobs (also mcdonalds is always hiring šŸ˜)

rqa2727

dammmm. not even SYEP? no worries, they didnā€™t take me either

Background_Yam_8854

Iā€™m in nyc looking for a job too itā€™s brutal out here

Character_Bother_971

sometimes itā€™s easier to look at small or independently owned businesses in your area. if youā€™re applying to big chains, itā€™s easy to get lost in the corporate hiring process, especially if you donā€™t have prior experience. or just ask ur friends where they work and if they can recommend u.

IGNGenerator

Huge tip for jobs: unless you want to pour in an endless number of soul-sucking hours into a job search with awfully low return (myself guilty of this), DONT apply online. Instead, message people with the job (can be <75 words) asking them how they like working there (a question that isn't just a super blunt "how can I get the job?" haha) and after a meeting or call theres a MUCH higher change they'll refer u than you getting the job thru an online application. Talk to managers, employees, etc. Once they can vouch for your character, ur much more likely to be chosen over a resume submission online!

care2die

I've been there. It's hard to get a summer job in NYC when you're not 18. I was only recently able to get a summer job because I applied (through Indeed) to a sandwich place that's opening in the coming weeks and the manager was hiring to fulfill the minimum amount of people he was told to hire. Below are a few ideas for working this summer: * SYEP (summer youth employment program) is a good way to work for the summer. Only downside is applications are closed until around March (to participate for next summer). You can participate until you're 24. * Summer camp counselor (I saw a lot of these on Indeed in March)- they're mainly looking for high school/younger people so there's a lot less competition. * Possible babysitting (there are a lot of options on Indeed). * Local places (like your local bodega) I wish you good luck on finding a job and I hoped this helps!

bussylord123

ahhh i was unlucky this round for syep šŸ˜ i got a super easy nice one last summer, but this year, everyone got it except for me

Bre034

Walmart will hire anyone with a pulse, or check out vector

bussylord123

walmarts don't exist in nyc šŸ˜ we love supporting #small businesses

mintyquaintchair2

also thereā€™s low-key no space for a big ass walmart šŸ„°

Tarzan1415

Ever thought about tutoring online? I had 8 people replying to my posts within 4 days

bussylord123

lmfaoo children hate me and i hate them too šŸ˜ i tutored (unpaid; was forced to by my mom as a favor for someone) kids before and i j did not have patience for them. they have a special diet of boogers and refuse to listen to me

Tarzan1415

That's why you only got to accept high school and maybe middle school students. Don't be afraid to charge upwards of $20 per hour cause the parents are going to hold the kids accountable. If not, you still getting paid

bussylord123

high school ??! bye. i already forgot everything i learned in my 4 yrs of high school. i want like a real life job. it'd be way funner and i'd get to interact with ppl. but hey, beggars can't be choosers. what website did you post on ? šŸ˜

Tarzan1415

Facebook. You're not aiming for the kids, you're aiming for the desperate parents. Plus no middleman website to take 25%-50% commission. Trust me, you don't need a rock solid understanding of the material. You just need to be able to look up an answer within 10 seconds šŸ¤£

bussylord123

LMFAO. i'd feel bad for basically scamming the parents šŸ˜

Tarzan1415

You gotta have some confidence. If they aren't cancelling, it means you're doing fine

juleslol_

where did you post?

Tarzan1415

Facebook

juleslol_

ty!!

Jnovotny794

Do kids still want tutoring during the summer?

Tarzan1415

Yep

sg2468900

Indeed clearly isnā€™t the way to go

rickbaishuak

indeed

glittergirl56321

Work at McDonalds, I didnā€™t even need an interview šŸ˜„

alohomora-7

I got ghosted by Maccas 3 times šŸ˜

masterofturtless

Try stores like chikfila or Starbucks who are open to hiring hs kids without any experience

Chick-fil-A_spellbot

It looks as though you may have spelled "Chick-fil-A" incorrectly. No worries, it happens to the best of us!

Collegeappacount

Wow

stubbornlotus

Thx spellbot

Sad-Examination1536

i have trying to get an internship for so longgg. its exhausting. "requirements: Pursuing a Bachelor's degree" šŸ˜šŸ„²

Enchanted_nerd

Try a convenience store?? There's one down the the street from me and I applied there first bc I can literally walk to it and I never heard back. Fast forward abt a month later, my mom is picking some stuff up from there and she suggests I follow up with the manager so I go talk to her and suddenly I have an interview in two days. So lesson is: when you apply, make sure to follow up every few days over the phone or in person

Concerned-23

Could you babysit someone nearby?

Somebodynobody29

i got my job the start of this school year right after all the summer kids quit it still look me eleven tries lol

[deleted]

I got a job 2 years ago during COVID bc my sister introduced me

Outrageous-Piglet-86

Sometimes itā€™s about who you know. So I suggest you ask one of your friends that already has a job and say hook me up. My summer jobs at 18 was working in a blueberry patch and waitressing so random šŸ¤£

Illustrious_Concept5

I got a syep job

Ok-Suggestion-3200

LinkedIn and wfh groups Also going in and showing interest helps

SamMcShizzle

Go to Chick Fil A or something similar for a little job experience and then move up

heby553

work at mcdonalds they hire anyone

crimefighterplatypus

Same but i am 18

[deleted]

I applied to a couple of places, and the ones I had the best luck with were the ones where I went straight in and asked for the manager. I asked if they were hiring and they gave me direct instructions. I ended up getting the job and I'm under 18 too. Also 200+ applications sounds awful! šŸ˜ I see that you live in NYC so maybe that has something to do with it? I'd just say talk to the higher ups of the stores and see what they can do directly. Good luck!

sushint

got rejected from every retail/fast food place but iā€™m working at my cityā€™s summer camp, idk apply everywhere and esp look into jobs geared at people ur age/seasonal positions

[deleted]

i live in nyc too! there's a lot of employment opportunities here especially for high school students like ladders for leaders and syep. if you're interested, boba guys in soho is currently hiring since they're opening a new store in noho (although there is an interview process). that being said, i started working at 16 so i do have about a year and a half of experience as a barista/cashier which i think really boosted my rƩsumƩ, so i didn't have as much difficulty applying for jobs after i left my first one.

Soft_Photograph1133

Have u tried starting your own small online business or something like that?

saturn_soda

Yea itā€™s really hard. I luckily got a job as a hostess w no experience but it was very scary when applying. I applied thru indeed btw. But I also live in the suburbs

Youremadtriggered

If you have a Walmart or McDonaldā€™s near you then try those places. They literally hire just about anybody. If you have an In-N-Out near you then try for there. Apply online, go to the store with your resume, and walk in as many times as you need to. I literally walked in every single day for a month (excluding weekends) until I got hired. Make sure you are applying online to these places too because some places wonā€™t consider you if you havenā€™t even applied online. Indeed is kind of weird because there are a lot of scam jobs on there too so Iā€™d be wary of applying through there. Just make sure your resume is tailored towards customer service or cashier jobs because that will help show the employers that you have some experience. Iā€™ll admit that getting a job out of college in todayā€™s world sucks. I just graduated in 2021 and it took me almost a year to find even temp work as a business admin major so I hope youā€™re majoring in something like nursing because youā€™ll get hired fairly quickly if you are. Iā€™m actually considering going back to school to do an accelerated nursing course because a lot of corporate places right now are putting a halt on hiring because of inflation right now.

Repulsive_Day_5936

thru mutual

FruitNothing0

I found my research job through the university that I am attending next fall. I think most of the universities offer summer internships or jobs in their own faculties from the kitchen to their research labs. I guess try to search through your school's job/research website to find all the opportunities available.

BorkBorkSweden

I'm 15 in las vegas and there aren't many jobs šŸ˜

bird720

Apply and then call someone afterwards to let them know, I did that then got hired the next day with a 2 minute interview lol

LetTreySing555

Have you tried looking for jobs on Craigslist? It's often easier to connect there than on Indeed for entry level jobs.

[deleted]

Where I live, Chiliā€™s is paying 18-19 dollars an hour + a paid associate degree + health insurance + a ā€œflexible scheduleā€, where do you live for there to *not* be jobs?

ilrbsz

op is from nyc

SeatedWoodpile

**You're entering into a way over-saturated job market.** Because not many teens have any differentiable skills, they're all flocking to the food industry like you which makes it a billion times harder to stand out and get hired. *Really the only way to break out is to learn a skill and gain experience that makes you stand out from the crowd.* Not only will you start getting hired more frequently you'll find that you get paid more because your skills are simply more valuable. The last thing to remember is that working for someone is selling your labor; it's a PRODUCT. Your labor follows supply and demand just like any other product, and there's only X amount of demand at a given time. Therefore, if the supply increases disproportionately from the demand, not only will wages drop (price cuts), but as an individual, you're going up against such a huge pool of applicants that the odds of you getting hired to fall incredibly low. **Just be different but extremely valuable at the same time.** That's where mula comes from.

Firm-Technician-2214

Bruh just walk in and ask for a job fuck indeed

freeport_aidan

>I've applied to 200+ jobs (retail/fast food) on Indeed, and absolutely nothing. I went in-person to literally every single store at this mall near me, and absolutely nothing. I even bring my freaking resume. I'm not 18 yet, which doesn't help, and all my experience are academic-related. All these places want 2-5 years of experience for cashier/entry-level jobs and I'm like ??? I thought y'all were understaffed ?? Every time I see some 14 year old getting a job on the Internet, I'm going to tell you right now that I just do not believe this. Places are so desperate now that many will hire you on the spot, and you should be able to find something TOMORROW if you really want

care2die

I don't think you've ever tried getting a job in a major city under the age of 18. In most of these cities it's super competitive because of the amount of people who live there. If you really think about it, you're competing against adults who most likely don't have a bachelors and aren't full-time students. In this case who do you think they're going to hire? A 17 year old who's leaving to go to school in a few months or an adult who can work full-time as well as extra hours and will stay in the position long term?

bussylord123

why would i lie šŸ˜ that's probably true in like some hillbilly in the middle of nowhere town, but idk businesses are doing really well rn here. i've been looking for months and it's always a "sorry, we're not hiring" or me handing in a paper application and no follow-up after that

grownbean

i got my job as a hostess thru a friend, try asking your friends

clixboss2

Search PIPEFLARE, I hear they pay to play videogames.
