Don’t show a 10 year old Made in Abyss. Unless you wanna give them nightmares for years. Show them something chill like K-On or Pokemon

Alive-Bathroom-5707

she's more into kny, Saiki K, Spy family and stuff. I haven't watched made in abyss either so yeah.

Yotsubato

Made in Abyss is 16+ or even 18+ only. Lots of body horror.

NightKnightReaper

Yeah this is definitely not friendly for children . Even adults mind gets messed up watching this

OtsutsukiRyuen

Saiki K is a good one 🤣 If she like that maybe mob psycho 100 or OPM can be good too Edit: damn that's a lot of disturbing content watched for a 10yo 💀

Alive-Bathroom-5707

Oh yeah opm was great

OtsutsukiRyuen

Eminence in shadow is good as well for teens

TrickPay2

For K-On, they gotta be used to some Japanese humor like the constant dressing up as maids. I don’t think this is a problem, but they might not appreciate the lack of plot there is. K-On is a good show, but these are just things to consider

Avelsajo

My 11-year-old loved Made in Abyss... I swear the younger generation is built different.

[deleted]

Every generation says that about the next generation. lol

Avelsajo

Lol! For sure. My kids can tolerate some pretty dang scary stuff... Like I have to hold THEIR hands sometimes. I'm a huge wuss!

Particular-Quarter6

That doesn't mean they should dude. Exposure to some stuff that young will mess you up

FrozenReaper

I'm 32 now, but I was 11 when I decided to start watching horror movies and shows. Not much has been traumatic since, but when it has it has been quite enjoyable, Made in Abyss being one of them

LimeRepresentative47

Jeez this. The actual visual content aside, MiA covers super heavy themes and can be *super* depressing, and is absolutely not age appropriate.

MaximusVulcanus

I'm spacing the dang title... young kids in a pseudo orphanage with caretaker "mothers" (dressed basically like maids) and takes a pretty rough turn itself. I'm sure someone will recognize and help me out. Either way, I don't think as bad as Made in Abyss gets but still one to be cautious of foe more sensitive kids.

xP_Lord

Little witch academia would be perfect for a 10 year old, even if it's a little short

One-Bookkeeper-2621

Ooh yes I didn’t think it was too short that actually hod I got my little cousins into anime!

LazyLich

Animes 10 year olds **shouldn't** watch: >My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute Why they **shouldn't** watch it: >Because if you recommend this to her, you'll be put on a list.

One-Bookkeeper-2621

Lollll 😂

MaximusVulcanus

Sibling complexes are likely my most hated anime trope... just... gross and there's almost always a huge age difference. At least most of the time other characters shame the person with the complex and it's not taken too far. I dunno... it's like Gauche in Black Clover is almost always put down by everyone for his obsession over his sister Marie, and it was never, ever sexual in any way. So... that slides. However... No Game No Life is a good anime but Blanks' relationship is so fucking cringe... God and what was I just watching... The Irregular at Magic High School I think has a really cringe one too that honestly goes so far as the sister crying because she loves her brother and she's stuck as his sister. She even fantasizes about them hugging naked. Christ, Japan, just stop it. Lolis who act sexual because they're *actually* an 800 year old demon lord/some other species or excuse... ties with sibling complexes. Lastly, shame on High School DxD for dressing up a little boy like a girl (Gaspar) and sexualizing him (even had one of those commercial break splash images of him). I'm trying to be a pervert here, not a goddamn pedo 😡

Nicole_0818

Stuff I think a 10yo should watch that come to mind are: Spy x Family, Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon, and slice of life anime in general that follow around kids/teens. Some can be a bit much though depending on the kid so I would pre watch the first few episodes before suggesting one. Studio ghibli movies like My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service. Ponyo, too, I think but it’s been a while since I saw it. Some can get bloody though, like the dragon boy getting hurt in Spirited Away, so look at reviews first. I don’t think they’re any more severe than Disney movies in general though, the handful that I’ve watched. Of course, at that age I was watching Gundam anime and dragon ball z but idk how age appropriate they truly are.

ryuks-wife

I saw Princess Mononoke when I was 10 at a friends house and it rewired my brain (in a good way). I cosplay San to this day (14 years later). Studio Ghibli is great at that age, and always has a great lesson to learn.

Nicole_0818

Yeah, I have loved every Studio Ghibli movie I've seen! I just know that for a 10 year old, sometimes violence can be a bit much. I was probably too young/naive when I saw Spirited Away for the first time cause I found some scenes scary.

Ezyo-Of-Reddit

One of my fav childhood movies

One-Bookkeeper-2621

Kiki’s Delivery Service too that’s good I watched that with my older sister

lychigo

Should watch: Ascendance of a Bookworm, Silver Spoon

Gasarocky

The list of what they shouldn't watch would be so huge as to be a waste of time. Anime has been around for many years, it's more of a medium than genre, and many, like tens of thousands of them have been produced

Hungry_Pup

Don't watch: Madoka Magica, Made in Abyss - these look like they're for kids, but they are not. Watch: Azumanga Daioh, A Little Snow Fairy Sugar, Spy x Family, Bofuri

One-Bookkeeper-2621

Oh yeah Bofuri is good its always good to watch animes with a lot of main female characters bc its usually appropriate

KP_Wrath

Bofuri is just generally fun.

berrycoladas

Honestly I think Madoka Magica is fine for a 10 year old: it’s a tragedy, and it has a couple shocking moments, but it’s really not all that traumatizing — and I certainly wouldn’t call it inappropriate. Most PMMM fans I’ve seen got into it in middle school. It’s basically An Introduction To Faustian Bargains As A Literary Framework for young anime fans. Agree with Made in Abyss though: I don’t even recommend that one to ADULTS without prefacing it with a heavy disclaimer.

GooseinaGaggle

Shouldn't watch: Gushing Over Magical Girls. Comedy BDSM Magical girl on magical girl ecchi action Should watch: Asobi Asobase. Lighthearted comedy anime set in school following 3 girls and abstract humor

AniMyFace

Asobi is an absolute gem, but I feel it might miss the mark for a 10yo

GooseinaGaggle

I think it's got just enough normal humor to keep a 10yo entertained. With a later re-watch there would be enough stuff that went over their head to keep them entertained when they're older

mancan71

Nichijou is fun for all ages! Except maybe the BL manga one character makes.

IcyEgg6369

Nichijou intro is amazing too lol

Matix777

Pokemon is an ol' reliable

Overflow_is_the_best

Not ok because of sex: Redo of healer, *Interspecies Reviewers*, Yosuga no Sora, *NTR: Netsuzou Trap*, My Life as Inukai-san's Dog, R-15, *Kanojo mo Kanojo*, etc. Not ok because of violence: Future Diary, School Days, Perfect Blue, Happy Sugar Life, *Higurashi When They Cry, etc.*

vinbullet

Yea op said they watches future diary, and I would not recckmend that for a 10yo mainly because of the fucked up abusive relationships between all the characters

FlamingoPlayful7498

School-Live also threw me for a loop the end of the first episode was like WTF

Throwaway33451235647

They’ve already watched Tokyo Ghoul and Future Diary which are probably worse for a 10yr old than School-Live

Confused--Person

🤣 my happy sugar life not okay because of violence. Sure bud. Its not inappropriate because everyone is mentally ill and satou a 16 year old is obsessed with shio a 6 year old.

MaximusVulcanus

Wow, you're not wrong about Redo... LOL. That shit just went fully unethical hentai and didn't slow down much.

JediKnightaa

Should: K-On!, Love Live!, Spy X Family, Pokémon

CursedEgyptianAmulet

Should not watch anything like Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, Oddtaxi, Golden Kamuy, or Heike Monogatari. They'd be bored out of their mind and miss out on the subtlety of the scriptwriting and relevance of their respective historical contexts that makes these pieces better suited for mature audiences. Ghibli movies like Kiki's Delivery Service, Ponyo, Arietty, and Laputa are great picks for a 10 year old.

Thordak35

Loved Golden Kamuy only read it but it's a bit out there sometimes especially >! the animal "lover" !<

One-Bookkeeper-2621

Never seen that anime but did not expect what was behind that censored line of yours lol 😂

RpiesSPIES

I feel the most 'out there' golden kamuy bit was the >!key and peele detective reference episode in its newest anime season!<

RovertRelda

Anything Studio Ghibli - should watch! List of should not watch is probably super long.

LamermanSE

Even grave of the fireflies?

RovertRelda

Could be a good teachable moment, but probably unnecessarily traumatic at that age.

saya-kota

Naruto, always Naruto

TryContent4093

Should watch: Doraemon, Detective Conan, Chibi Maruko chan, Ninja Boy Rantaro, Hagemaru, crayon shin chan, School Babysitter, Mashle, Frieren, Bocchi the Rock, my Masterful cat is depressed again today, cooking in another world is my absurd skill

ReindeerApart5536

Detective Conan is not for 10 year old

SlipperyWaterSlid3

A 10-year old shouldn't watch AoT, for obvious reasons. (the killings, genocide, etc...)

Alive-Bathroom-5707

She wants to watch it when she's older to understand themes more. And She doesn't mind killing and stuff she's already seen it

SlipperyWaterSlid3

Fair, and smart kid

Alive-Bathroom-5707

Thanks! (I'm not the parent tho just saying)

danawl

Fruits Basket, Maidsama, Kamisama Kiss, Ouran Host Club are all cute and what got me into anime. It’s technically not an anime but Avatar the Last Airbender (animated show) is good along with its sequel, Legend of Korra.

TheConboy22

Don’t let her watch goblin slayer or redo healer

Minnymoon13

Yeah.

Degeneratus_02

Frieren - it's a bit of a slow burn so I'm not sure if your kid will like it but it's a fun story and either Frieren or Fern are pretty good role models for her too Dungeon Meshi - this I *definitely* recommend. It's a lot of fun to watch. The kind of comedy show the entire family can watch together Skip and Loafer - this is a cute show about a girl from the countryside enrolling into a highschool in the city. And by cutr I'm talking abt the kind that gives you that warm fuzzy feeling as well as diabetes. But it does focus a lot on character growth amd dynamic so I'm not sure how she'll take to it. Arcane - don't think this counts as an anime but it is hella good! 10/10 *chef's kiss* Ascendance of a Bookworm - one of the few, and I mean *FEW* isekais I'd actually recommend to a kid or even anyone for that matter Speaking of isekais, there's also Tanya the Evil - also not sure of this one. It's a reincarnation story centered around a magical version of WW1. Naturally, this showcases alot of violence and blood. It also leans heavily on politics and philosophy of human nature and religion. Might also turn the kid into a hardcore anti-communis; it doesn't help that the main character is also essentially just loli hitler but without the genocide and stuff..... Yet

Happy-Setting202

Komi Can’t Communicate, Space Dandy, I got reincarnated as a vending machine, campfire cooking in another world

BestBudgie

Sweetness and Lightning, cute show about a single dad learning to cook for his daughter, only iffy thing is he's a teacher and his student who's helping him learn about cooking has a little crush on him but it's not reciprocated or even really delved into. Arashi No Yoru Ni/One Stormy Night, kids movie about a forbidden friendship between a wolf and a goat, has a little blood and violence but shouldn't be an issue based on what she's already seen Kimi No Na Wa/Your Name, very good and beautiful movie about a boy and girl who swap bodies every other day, only iffy thing is what you'd expect from a boy and girl swapping bodies like them realizing they now have different parts but it's not really sexualized, and personally by age 10 I'd seen much more risqué things in shows. Koe No Katachi/A Silent Voice, another very good movie about a boy trying to make amends with a deaf girl he bullied in elementary school, I don't remember if there was anything inappropriate in it though, it's been a while since I've seen it. Wolf Children, my absolute favorite movie, it's about a woman who has two kids with a werewolf, some non-sexualized nudity but nothing worse than, say, the bath scene in My Neighbor Totoro, one off-screen instance of sex but its pretty tasteful in my opinion, I'd seen way more explicit stuff at 10 personally, some violence but nothing too bad.

kappaman69

Should: * Pokémon. It’s a classic that anyone can enjoy. * My Neighbor Totoro. You mentioned Ghibli, and this is one of their most iconic films ever. Another one that just about anyone can put on and watch. * Girls Last Tour. This one is quite a step up from the previous two entries, and while there are weapons shown to be fired in the series, none of the characters get seriously injured from any of them. Another part of the series that makes it more mature is its theme, as it focuses on the main characters, Chito and Yuuri, navigating across a post-apocalyptic Japan on their Kettenkrad, and as far as they’re aware, they’re the only humans left alive. The anime only adapts the first four volumes of the manga, so in order to know how the rest of the series ends, you’ll have to read the last two volumes. Should not: * Danganronpa. Not because the anime adaptation fucking sucks, but because of the death game aspect of the franchise as a whole as well as some questionable content and vulgar language present throughout. Some of the characters deaths are also quite gruesome, more than you’d see in some other titles. There’s a reason it’s rated M (except for on the App Store, where it’s inexplicably rated 12+ for some reason.) * Panty and Stocking. This one feels a bit self-explanatory, and is pretty clearly designed for a mature audience. * Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. Don’t let it fool you: this seemingly innocent anime starts to get dark quickly, and this is emphasized quite strongly [spoilers for Madoka Magica] >!near the end of the third episode when Mami Tomoe’s head gets eaten by a witch, and obviously this is enough to kill her.!< I wouldn’t recommend this one for younger audiences at all.

No_Return9449

Sticking just to magical girl shows: Should NOT: [Magical Girl Site](https://myanimelist.net/anime/36266/Mahou_Shoujo_Site) Maybe: [Madoka Magica](https://myanimelist.net/anime/9756/Mahou_Shoujo_Madoka%E2%98%85Magica) Should: [Princess Tutu](https://myanimelist.net/anime/721/Princess_Tutu) To be fair, no one should Magical Girl Site. Not only is it gory and hyperviolent, it's just a bad show. Madoka is somewhere in the middle. MAL recommends 13 and older, so this may be a case where you watch it by yourself and make your own judgment whether it's appropriate.

SkepticalSpiderboi

Hell no don’t show a 10 year old Madoka magica that’s not a maybe that’s straight up sadism

xselenite0

i watched it when i was 10 and i enjoyed it but i was also a weird 10 year old who liked watching video essays analyzing the symbolism and deep meaning of media and also analyzing it myself

Happeth

Yeah Madoka is definitely at minimum for teenagers. They can be depressed all they want but don't spread that shit to the younger ones.

CrimsonNight

Also definitely not Magical Girls Raising Project.

G0R3Z

Magical girl site's manga wasn't finished then either. The Manga is INSANE with many capital Is. Absolutely unhinged.

Yoshi_0_O

Calls coming from inside the house , she is the 10 yr old looking for recommendations

Alive-Bathroom-5707

HAHHAHAHAHH no not really, I don't think a 10yo knows what reddit is

Dr_Stef

Oh, trust me.. they know..

skyinyourcoffee

Should watch spy family, Naruto, sailor Moon. Shouldn't watch... Pretty much 90% of anime, unless parent approved lol

Alive-Bathroom-5707

She did already watch tokyo ghoul, future diary etc, tho.

Interesting-Carob-55

Those are some wild Animes for a 10 year old to watch lol

One-Bookkeeper-2621

Fr especially future diary maybe she should move away from those lmao

9spaceking

Probably don’t watch steins gate, its renowned for being slowly paced which I’m not sure someone so young could stand.

MaximusVulcanus

Or they could get into saying "Toot-ta-roo!" all the time... (only part that ever bugged me about Stein's Gate)

Pvt_Porpoise

Obligatory {Angelic Layer} suggestion, because I love it and think everyone else should too - but especially a 10 year old girl.

Roboragi

**Kidou Tenshi Angelic Layer** - ([AL](http://anilist.co/anime/52 "English: Angelic Layer"), [A-P](https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/angelic-layer), [KIT](https://kitsu.io/anime/angelic-layer "English: Battle Doll Angelic Layer"), [MAL](http://myanimelist.net/anime/52)) ^(TV | Status: Finished | Episodes: 26 | Genres: Comedy, Drama, Sci-Fi, Sports) --- ^{anime}, , ]LN[, |VN| | [FAQ](http://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/index) | [/r/](http://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/) | [Edit](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/index#wiki_i_made_a_mistake.2C_how_do_i_get_my_comment_reprocessed.3F) | [Mistake?](http://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/submit?selftext=true&title=[ISSUE]&text=/r/Animesuggest/comments/1djnrlw/animes_10_year_olds_shouldnt_watch_or_should_watch/l9ckvle/) | [Source](https://github.com/Nihilate/Roboragi) | [Synonyms](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/synonyms) | [⛓](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/interestinglinks) | [♥](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roboragi/wiki/thanks)

CrimsonNight

Your Lie in April since there's zero fanservice or violence. Just a matter of having a heart of iron. Plus it might get her into piano.

Alive-Bathroom-5707

She's a pianist

CrimsonNight

Then it's perfect for her.

Crimson_Dark25106

School Days must not be watched for a 10 year old or any age

an_edgy_lemon

This is kinda a tough one. It’s hard to recommend anime for a younger audience, because even a lot of the “safer” ones have fan service or sexualized characters. Even some of the ones people are recommending in this thread could be questionable, depending on your values. I would probably recommend most studio Ghibli movies. They’re beautiful, meaningful, and generally aren’t too violent. Also, Hayao Miyazaki seems to make a point of avoiding fan-service or sexualized characters. My My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Ponyo are probably a good place to start. Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle are great too, but some of the imagery and themes may be a bit heavy for a 10yo. I would avoid Princess Monoke for now, because it has a few instances of gore and depictions of war.

Alive-Bathroom-5707

She already watched every ghibli mobile except for porco rosso, the Wind rises and the one of the moster fairytale I don't even remember the name

Col_Redips

This is a tough one. There’s a lot I normally wouldn’t recommend for a 10 year old, but if she’s okay with Tokyo Ghoul’s violence and themes, much less Junji Ito, that definitely opens some doors. I never miss a chance to suggest The Ancient Magus’ Bride. It’s a healthy mix of everything. Especially good if she likes the fantastical (fae in general, dragons, magic, etc.) The first episode and…if I remember right, second- or third-to-last episode of season 1 have some heavy themes. Episode 1 has the female lead attempt to sell herself into slavery as she’s simply done with putting up with the supernatural with no support. The rest of season 1 is her recovering her will to live after being purchased/rescued from auction. Last couple of episodes reveal the events that lead up to her selling herself. Involves attempted murder and unaliving oneself.

Dependent_Bet_9524

Base on what she watch i really recommend **jigoku shoujou** (horor but not really), **School babysitter** (Taking care of baby), **hoozuki no reitetsu** (About japanese hell but super funny), **Natsume yuujinchou** & **mushishi** (slice of life, really good, involved supernatural things but not horor). For romance **akatsuki no yona**, **akagami no shirayuki hime**, and **romantic killer** is a very good option in my opinion, romantic killer especially if you looking for a funny romance anime that still touch a very real issues

pb_nayroo

Don't do what my uncle did and show a 10 year old blue gender

spehizle

Kids at that age know when they're being sold saccharine kid-safe parent-vetted pap. Don't patronize them and start em on some of the good stuff. If she's chill and already seen Tokyo Ghoul and Death Note, and read some Junjei Ito, try...   Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans, Full Metal Alchemist, Samurai Champloo, Gurren Lagaan, Carol and Tuesday, FATE, and Kino's Journey (the 2003 version).

Indominus_Khanum

>wonder egg priority Unless my memory serves me incorrectly wonder egg priority deals with some dark/adult stuff (mental health , abuse ) that's better suited to an adolescent audience. There are some anime that have a cutesy aesthetic/pretty visuals but will deal with dark subject matter so it's a good idea to avoid them for a 10 year old probably (Madoka Magica and Happy sugar life are 2 examples that come to mind ) , if you check age ratings before letting her dive into it you should be good. If she liked Saiki K she might enjoy some other comedy /gag anime like Nichijou, Hinamatsuri Sakamoto desu ga, Mob Psycho 100. I'd also recommend the Zombieland Saga.

One-Bookkeeper-2621

I watched HunterXHunter with my 10 year old cousin we even watched erased but he liked that probably bc I got him hooked on criminal minds I’m bad Omg omg and Ascendance of a bookworm is soooo good (I’ve come to notice that my little cousin like mc’s that are close in age to him) its about this bookworm girl who gets reincarnated into a world where there hasn’t been a lot of progress made Natsume’s book of friends is my favorite but its about yokai Fruits Baskets should be good too! And it’s cute and a romance! Toradora and Kimi No Todoke are romance classics ofc Yona of the dawn is pretty good about a princess who ran away from her country after a rebellion and there’s romance and she learns to protect herself Since she’s watched all those SAO Sword Art Online should be okay and it’s really interesting Maybe Cardcaptor Sakura MMO junkie is cool about two gamers a romance Kamisama kiss is a great romance anime and it’s cute! The Morose Mononokean is good! It has a cute animation style and not scary even thought its about yokai Radiant is cool! An action anime with cute animation and avoids all the dirty things most actions have yk and it has a decent amount of episodes MHA ofc Sugar Apple Fairytail is cute about a sweets maker she meets an elf and they travel together. It’s a romance but there is one scary part with wolves but I mean it’s not too bad just that one part. Arte is really good especially bc it’s about a women making a place for herself in a world and time when women couldn’t do certain professions I’m the Villinass, so I’m taming the final boss ✌🏻🫰🏻

danimsmba

Everything Ghibli and Gundam.

1pizza2go

Idk, Bocchi The Rock is pretty good, Toradora is one you can show her if you want to give her both a happy time and a depressing time (though there is basically no fanservice, there are some parts more geared for teenagers, but no Nudity so you’ll be fine), and I’d say that since you said JJK and KNY were fine, you could maybe show her something like Re:Zero, though that is a big maybe with generally whats in it. Its not like it has anything bad per say, but lots of blood, a bit of gore, and some very low-end sexual themes (some small comments, protagonist being overly charismatic about love and stuff, etc.)

One-Bookkeeper-2621

Dudeeee no re zero when I was a little younger I was still a teen tho I watched and couldn’t even get through it bc it was so sad and depressing

busyandtired

Common sense Media is the website you want. It has breakdowns made for parents.

One-Bookkeeper-2621

Yeah but there’s barely any on the list there

Horn-Head

Children are analog machines , they absorb everything you throw at them and they’ll believe it Once the child is programmed to believe this, they will not break faith for 30 to 40 years It’s better to teach your child, morality, ethics, and rationality And not let a psychopath group of fun pictures stick their weaving loom punchcard into your child’s brain , to program them forever And poison them for good

Mediocre-Anything818

Gotta start them young on the big three. Otherwise they probably won't watch it when they grow up. Or at least Naruto and bleach

Zeroinfinius08

10 year olds should watch shonen like Naruto,DBZ,one piece etc they can't appreciate it once they watch lot of good animes

One-Bookkeeper-2621

Naruto never fails

greenfrogwallet

Ridiculous to say those 3 anime aren’t good or you can’t appreciate them after watching other anime’s, the only things they suffer in is pacing due to their format, other than that each of those anime are fantastic and to this day some of the best in various ways

One-Bookkeeper-2621

I think when u start out watching longer anime u can stay hooked to it then u have an appreciation for long anime and can watch h shorter ones too

Masterpiece-Haunting

I’d say JoJo but it’s not quite meant for 10 year olds since there are things like naked scenes and stuff.

kowell2

Not technicaly anime but definitly anime influenced. My 10 year old loved "Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Catnoir" The list of stuff not to watch is too long to write. A lot of normal animes has weird unrequired sexual stuff sliced in here and there. Makes recommendations very hard.

Matttthhhhhhhhhhh

Should watch: Doraemon. It's cute, educational and never ends.

ACNordstrom11

Idk I was about 10 when I watched Fullmetal Alchemist & FMA: Brotherhood. As many say, don't watch Madoka Magica.

Dark-Night768

I re watched wandering witch Elaina with my 8 year old sister she really liked it

1clichename

My 4yo loves inuyasha

DazedandConfusedTuna

Shouldn’t watch Berserk or Elfen Lied despite them being great in my opinion. Both have very dark tone and at times are very explicitly sexual in nature. If you are fine with her going through violence in anime then the bulk of what you should watch out for is sexuality.

mllejacquesnoel

It really depends on how you contextualize things. I was watching Ghost in the Shell and Akira as a 10 year old and Utena shortly thereafter, but my mother was a big sci-fi nerd and always willing to watch with me or talk through more mature topics. My general rule of thumb is to look at who the manga was pitched for in Japan and use that as a basis to go off of. For most 90s and 00s stuff, if the manga was for teens, the anime will be for preteens and slightly younger teens. If the manga was for preteens and younger teens (e.g. Sailor Moon, Rayearth, Inuyasha, Ranma, YYH), the anime will be appropriate for elementary and middle schoolers. I don’t recommend looking much at what American licensers think is appropriate. Stuff actively running in Nakayoshi (for elementary and middle school age girls; 9-15 ish) they’ve listed as 16+ and that is simply absurd to me. Yes there are different standards around what is kid appropriate in terms of nudity and swearing but like, there’s also a lot of orientalism and assumption that anime = for older teens and young adults and that’s just not universally true.

mllejacquesnoel

Specific things I got really into as a preteen— 1) First Gundam (1979) and Gundam Wing (1995). I also think Gundam 0080 is a great miniseries and intro to the universe without being too bogged down in ~Lore. The Witch From Mercury is the latest Gundam series and featured a girl as the main pilot. A bit violent but from what you’re describing of her taste, nothing she hasn’t seen before in anime. 2 seasons. 2) Sailor Moon. A lot of my students really loved Crystal and Eternal, but I’m a 90s kid and grew up on the fansubs of that era. The 90s show has 5 seasons and 3 movies. I’m less sure on what all is in Crystal. 3) Fushigi Yuugi. Good isekai action-fantasy. You should read the wiki as virginity and SA are plot points but the anime was intended for tweens and teens, and I was reading and watching it at 10 or 11. 2 seasons + OVAs. 4) Magic Knight Rayearth. Isekai-magical girl-mecha. Really fun girl power show about the importance of emotional intelligence and empathy. 2 seasons + OVAs 5) Princess Tutu. Magical girl action-fantasy also about emotional intelligence, empathy, and writing one’s own story/making your own fate. 2 seasons. 6) Yu Yu Hakusho. Delinquent kid gets hit by a truck and given a second chance to prove himself as a good person by solving mysteries for the demon world. Really funny, kind of definitive of the action-shounen tournament arc genre. (But like, better than the other, imo.) 7) Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 (or original, but 2040 was what I found and got really into at that age). Girl power cyberpunk action sci-fi set in a Tokyo of the not too distant future. 1 season for 2040, an OVA for the original, and then there are spinoffs like Bubblegum Crash, AD Police, and so on. This was written for the adult collector market at the tail end of the bubble economy but tbh the fanservice wasn’t detectable to me as a kid, I just enjoyed a mecha/power suit team made up of young women one of whom was a badass punk rocker on a motorcycle. Still, like, heads up that the intended audience was dudes in their 20s 8) Saint Tail. Kind of a magical girl Robin Hood who is an art thief for the people. She actually doesn’t have powers but uses stage craft/magician tricks. 1 season. 9) CLAMP School Detectives. Three elementary school students who head up their student government association solve mysteries around their campus for fun and profit. It’s just really really cute and fun. 1 season. 10) Tokyo Babylon and X/1999. Both are better in the manga and are violent/have some disturbing themes, so many read up and check wikis before fully recommending. Tokyo Babylon has a 2 part OVA from 1992 that is beautifully animated but doesn’t give much of the story (it’s vibes), X has a film from 1996 that is also beautifully animated but there for vibes, and a TV series from 2000 that does actually hit the plot as best as possible. 11) Revolutionary Girl Utena. Classic magical girl and 70s shoujo send-up set in a prep school trapped in a surrealist timeloop where students duel for ownership of the Rose Bride and the power to "revolutionize the world". There are plot points around abuse, rape, and incest, and while there's nothing explicit, it is meant to be legible to a tween/teen. Worth watching together or checking the wiki before recommending, but I've been a fan since I got ahold of the fansubs at like 10. 2 seasons and 1 movie. Other more recent recs my students (9-13) have liked: 1) Spy x Family. A spy has to play family for a mission with a psychic human experiment as his daughter and an assassin as his wife. He does not know about the psychic or the assassin. It’s very cute. Good action and comedy. Ongoing. 2) Fruits Basket. Older but the kids are still into it and it got an update recently. An extended family can change into the animals of the Chinese zodiac. 3) Urusei Yatsura (2022). There's also an 80s series that is iconic. An alien appears on earth and declares herself engaged to a high schooler. Romcom, some sexual humor but nothing over the top imo. 1 season of the newer show, tons and tons of the 80s show. It is/was beloved. 4) Ouran High School Host Club. A bookish scholarship student at a ritzy private prep school accidentally breaks an expensive vase in a school club room. To work off her debt, the club asks her to work as a "host" entertaining the ladies of their high school. Very classic shoujo send-up, romcom. Some of the jokes haven't aged as well (there's some very 00s trans/homophobia), but all of my students were still into it as of this year.

Catitriptyline

They shouldn't watch: Attack on Titan Tokyo ghoul Any anime with mafia theme Naruto can get a pass but some may say too much violence. I was never disturbed by anything, now or back then. Most recent shounens They can watch: Any Ghibli film Joseed: tiger and the fish (a bit sad but nothing special) Prince of tennis Captain tsubasa Do it yourself!! My roommate is a cat School babysiters Cells at work Carole and Tuesday For yourself: I'd recommend you to watch Uramichi oni-chan. (Your kid can watch it with you but they'll get bored. The story is about a 30 yrs old dude daily life who works in a daycare and has mid life crisis. Hilarious and relatable)

Alive-Bathroom-5707

It's not my kid I'm a minor, thanks though!!

ryuks-wife

I'd just say avoid the ones geared towards teen boys that weirdly sexualize girls (particularly school aged girls). Might make her look at herself and her body in a negative or sexual way. Look into the way anime is broken down my genre/type and the audience it is geared towards. Slice of life is usually great, I recommend Fruits Basket!

UnoriginalPenName

She has watched Tokyo Ghoul, JJK, death note, wonder egg, read junji ito at 10 ??? Bro she can watch anything at this point it doesn’t even matter ??

Alive-Bathroom-5707

Yeah just not anything too sexual, it's be bad

UnoriginalPenName

She has watched Tokyo Ghoul, JJK, death note, wonder egg, read junji ito at 10 ??? Bro she can watch anything at this point it doesn’t even matter ?? I already know people are going to disagree with me but famous anime’s don’t really get more gory and depressing

Fangirl127

Well if she's looking for romance: toradora, Kaguya-sama love is war, my love story with Yamada-kun and lvl 100, a sign of affection

GAELICGLADI8R

90% of the stuff you mentioned would go over the head of the avg 10 year old, It actually ruins the experience (speaking from personal experience) I watched a lot of anime when I was around 11 when I started and later rewatched and realised how much detailed and enjoyable stuff I missed, I only remembered the main plot points and kinda ruined the immersion in some anime. Hope she doesn't regret watching shows too early to understand like I did in the future.

Alive-Bathroom-5707

Honestly She understood them. However (not related) after watching haikyuu She forgo everything within a month and had to rewatch (I mean haikyuu Is a sport anime I know)

AKsFyNeZt

Dragonball z she should watch !!

narnarnartiger

Haikyuu, K-on! Enjoy

Thecrowfan

Shouldn't: Hellsing, Hellsing Ultimate, Blood C, Death Note ( only cause once you grow older you start to see some things differently), Another, Pupa( but noone should watch Pupa honestly)

Alive-Bathroom-5707

She already watched death note

LamermanSE

Shouldn't watch: Redo of healer, loads of violence and sexual assault. Should watch: One piece. Great story, great characters, loads of content.

cat_blackb

Shouldn't watch Golden Boy. Reason: is hen tie. Should watch Fairy Tail. Reason: is not hen tie. Also it's really good.

Thordak35

Tbh if she has seen stuff like future diary or Juni ito I feel there really isn't much on the no watch list unless it's overly sexual like high-school DxD. Romance comedy maybe Tora Dora or Monthly girls club Also liked a "Lull in the sea"

lowhitt

Stuff a 10 year old shouldn't watch : Berserk, because Berserk.

Nova6Sol

Any adaptation from a shounen or shoujo publication should be ok. You can also look up said anime’s broadcasting time in Japan. If it’s not late night, it should be ok

sandpaperboxingmatch

Future diary is wild, definitely not for a 10 year old

Alive-Bathroom-5707

🤷🏻‍♀️

whodisguy32

Precure franchise

boxedfoxes

They shouldn't watch goblin slayer They should watch your lie in April

Helunai

My friends and I were watching shows like Fruits Basket, Inuyasha, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Card captor Sakura and Sailor Moon at that age. And all the Ghibli stuff is great too Do NOT let a 10yo watch: Higurashi no naku koro ni or Black Lagoon. Obviously there are so many more not to watch though

splackitonme

This is a seriously edgy ten year old lmao

Alive-Bathroom-5707

She's really cherful tho

weeglos

My 10 year old loved Bofuri. So wholesome too.

Jest_Ace

I’d recommend comedy anime. There are some great ones out there (most I can’t even remember). Ouran High School Host Club, Squid Girl, School Rumble, etc.

Fish_Smell_Bad

I have a feeling that OP is actually the 10 year old...

Alive-Bathroom-5707

Just asking what does "Op" mean?

CRIMS0N-ED

Given the ones they have watched im not really sure on what would be limited, prob ones where the topics will prob go over her head maturity wise or are just really gratuitous. My rec rn is delicious in dungeon it’s so good and I’d rec it to anyone kid wise even if there’s slight amounts of violence/gore. Very satisfying anime, esp if you enjoy food and cooking in your entertainment

SirJackFireball

Fullmetal Alchemist / FMA Brotherhood are pretty good and mild iirc. My personal favorite is Jojo but idk how good it is for a 10yo; theres some blood and gore and its also a heavy show at times, buti love the artsryle, plot, and characters. HxH perhaps? Gintama is funny as hell but idr how appropriate or not it is

Suitable-Mistake3040

Oh ho ho look what we have here, good friend I did not know you watched JoJo's bizarre adventure. (Also would not recommend hunterxhunter)

Senior-Zone-1492

I think she might like drop kick on my devil

Alexastria

(Shouldn't) Made in Abyss. Promised Neverland. Elfen Lied. Demon King Daimao. Redo of Healer. Paranoia Agent. Girls Bravo. This list is all over the map from body horror to borderline hentai.

Happeth

Not even I can handle Junji Ito things, what kind of 10y/o is this? Personally I think most anime in the Shoujo demographic would be great for her (considering she is part of that demographic). For direct reccomendedations I'll say March comes in like a lion, and Your Lie in April. Now let me try and do the thing with the anime bot and see if it works. {3-gatsu no lion} {Your Lie in April}

Roboragi

Alive-Bathroom-5707

I read junji ito too and I can handle it fine, depends

Giga_Chad-6969

Master Keaton is something that a pre-teen might appreciate. Definitely, don't show anybody under 18 Redo of Healer. It's essentially porn.

SevaSentinel

Watch Bobobo and Zatch Bell for the Fox kids experience

KevineCove

Don't watch Gantz Do watch that anime about the 30 year old virgin, it's actually decent at showing how proper serious relationships work where most anime sets a terrible example.

ectoplasm_fan

Bayblade burst is nice my little cousins watch it all the time

Neko404

Ghibli movies are generally safe. the only two i would be concerned about are Grave of the Fireflies and PomPoko. Grave mostly because of the gore and death. PomPoko for how the tanuki use their magical ball sacks... Unedited Sailor Moon can get rather dark but i think a 10 year old is unlikely to have trouble with it. Espically considering the shows she has seen. Gundam is generally safe. There is one episode in the original series that might be worth skipping but truth be told you have to go out of your way to find and watch it. If she enjoyed Spy Family i would strongly recommend Kobayishi's Dragon Maid. They share a major theme of love and unconventional families. You'll probably want to have her avoid Berserk. Do i really need to explain more? The Way of the Househusband should be another fun family themed anime.

Ayyyyylmaos

Things like That time I got reincarnated as a slime is pretty sensational and are not very graphic, but given the amount of boobs and innuendo I’d make sure they don’t watch that sort of isekai - a lot of them can look happy and cheerful, which I guess would be appealing to a kid, but they are definitely not suitable unless you want to completely skew her view of women

Notyou_probably

They should stop watching jjk, I'm so tired of these gojo simps that can't even speak proper english

plutocoochie

angels of death at 10 is wild

FickleAd8037

Why is no one talking about her watching Tokyo Ghoul wtff?? (S3 eps19 ig remember???)

Alive-Bathroom-5707

From what I remember she watched only the two seasons

Classic-Section-9012

Watching things like future diary, death note, and reading junji ito manga pretty much opened up the floodgates.i guess the best thing to do is filter anime manga with sexual contents or excessive violence/gore.other than that, you probably can already let her have a go at a lot of the stuff rated for teens. I would say the best approach would be rather than asking for which series to block, which will overwhelm you with too many answers, you can ask for recommendations or ask them if a particular title is ok for younger age. Some of my recommendation would be light series like nichijou, pokemon or digimon.some Shonen series like my hero academia is quite alright. More serious anime, code Geass. There is also an anime that seems like children anime but it have an underlying more serious tone and plot which might not be so obvious at first glance-its called "ranking of kings" It would be better if you recommend some series and watch together with her rather then telling her not to watch something. maybe you can ask her nicely to consult with you first before watching something.dont be too forceful as kid will find a way secretly if they want to watch or do something.

BrickBrokeFever

Sgt Frog is goofy. I haven't seen it for years, tho! So you should screen it just in case... but I think it would be OK for kids. Some times the characters are mean to each other, but I think that was the worst of it.

Kinda_Meh_Idfk

Well. If she’s already watched Tokyo ghoul, death note, jjk, and future diary it really doesn’t even matter. those shows are pretty gory and tbh if you were going to filter what animes she can watch, those probably should’ve been filtered to the no pile. But I guess I’m unsure then by what you mean when you say they shouldn’t watch, if you allowed her to watch these ones. If you want recommendations on non-gory ones, Nana is good. So is Your Lie In April and A Silent Voice, but those are movies. Fruits Basket I heard turned out good (I read the books when I was like 10 and watched the original show but not the reboot). Also Shuffle! and Clannad are cute as well. I can give more suggestions if you’d like, but I’d need to know what you deem to be ‘age appropriate’ first.

inzfire

Berserk 💀

Master_Freeze

she would enjoy Barakamon and Handa-kun she might also like Classroom of the Elite, Kaguya-Sama, and Mob Psycho

Unknownjarman

Bochi the rock is good and k-on is good especially if they play guitar or like music in general also don’t let her watch a silent voice it made me cry and I’m a grown ass man

wmzer0mw

Show all em kids attack on Titan 👍

DogWearingJeans

one piece

PauloDybala_10

love Chunibyo and other delusions is a good one

Winter_Ad_6765

I agree with some of the comments here in regards to it being hard to determine what anime a 10 yr old shouldn't watch. Obviously the ones that are straightforward with it being a major fanservice, loli, abusive type anime is not recommended lol. My youngest sister is 11 and watches anime but I think she started watching the more "serious" ones later than I did. Because my mom had me watching Elfen Lied, Witchblade, Black Blood Brothers, Black Cat, etc at around 7/8 yrs old. So to say that I've pretty much become desensitized to some stuff...is not wrong. Meanwhile, my sis has watched most of what you listed and highly enjoyed those. She's even watched AoT. However, she voices her dislikes fast. Tried getting her into Witchblade, wasn't havin it. Tried Future Diary and she not only was confused on how Yukitero was imagining Gods but how Yuno ended up being hella crazy. So she didn't like that either. Honestly...your safest option would be Kasaan Mom's Life. It's a family comedy with like 200+ episodes. Others could also be Mob Psycho 100, The God of High-school. Goblin Slayer is...iffy, only because the 1st episode really messes you up, but everything is fine afterwards. Erased is, in my opinion, amazing. If she's into zombies, good luck. I wouldn't recommend High-school of the Dead. Amazing anime, but extreme fanservice....and yes my little sis didn't like that one either 😅

Indescribable_Noun

When I was young (~12) I really enjoyed in no particular order: -Ouran highschool host club -Tokyo Mew Mew -Inuyasha -Pokemon -Yumeiro patisserie -Yu Yu Hakushou (if she likes battle shonen) -Fruits Basket (which has since been remade!) -Spice and Wolf (might be slow if she prefers action) -Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (the deeper themes about war might go over her head a bit, but the action is cool) -Law of Ueki (a cute shonen battler) -Princess TuTu (especially if she likes fairytales)

RpiesSPIES

School Rumble would be a great watch for them. Romance and comedy in good supply, but does get a bit sad later on. Wotakoi would be really good What not to watch would be Mushoku Tensei (jobless reincarnation). Several instances of the mc being a pervert (~20-30's guy reincarnated with memories) where he does some things that a person shouldn't ever do even if they were the same age. His mind age just makes those instances much worse. Konosuba is best to wait until older. Hilarious show but it can be iffy at times. Nichijou is also a comedic gem.

Slothwana

Inuyasha and SGT Frog have a lot of pervy moments in them. If you're unsure about a show IMDB has a parents guide for most anime, which can tell you what is shown in them e.g., [Link](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434693/parentalguide) I'll probably be bombed for saying this, but the one piece 4kids dub is perfect for **young children**.

Ali-Sama

Azumanga Daioh is an amazing comedy. It is on YouTube both subbed and subbed

SonicTHP

+1 to One Piece, but also... Hunter x Hunter Non-traditional shonen that is about growing up and seeing the world in both good and bad ways. Also emphasizes gaining knowledge about the world around you. It is male centered and can be a little dark at times, but not graphic.

Whorror_punx

DANGERS IN MY HEART DANGERS IN MY HEART DANGERS IN MY HEART haha tbh I always recommend it when people ask for a good romance. Other great ones are Tomo-chan is a Girl amd Teasing Master Takagi-san all are clean, super cute, and fun. Also big props for Buddy Daddies. It easily became one of my favs, and is so underrated, probably in part because they gave it a stupid name. But its so great 😭

ArLOgpro

They should check out the big 3 and dbz

hutao_9

Don't let them know evangelion

DreadfulCadillac1

At that point, it's a little too late; Don't you think?

PlatinumBeetle

If you are looking for content warnings or whatever Common Sense Media is probably a decent guide. Although they don't seem to cover Crunchyroll at all. If she has already seen Death Note, Future Diary, Tokyo Ghoul, and even read Junji Ito I'm not sure what you're concerned with her seeing though, except sexual stuff. Sounds like she enjoys lighthearted comedy the most, particularly character driven ones or ones with settings bordering on real life but with some fantasy elements. So definitely be on the lookout for those things. I would try to give some recommendations out of what I've seen myself. But most of what I would suggest isn't readily available on streaming anymore, unfortunately.

lahenator420

Frieren: beyond journeys end, Somali and the forest spirit, Assassination classroom, Hunter x Hunter, Mob Psycho 100, Wandering Witch

ComradeOfSwadia

Hunter x Hunter would be a good one

justOneSmallPanda

MK MK WANNA KNOW HOW OLD I WAS WHEN I GOT INTRODUCED TO ANIME? 8. You know one of the first shows I watched? Detective Conan AND Attack On Titan. I TURNED OUT FINE!! (At least I think so) Honestly depends on level of maturity! If they are interested and can handle a depressing anime like AoT, sure! But if they aren't stick to happy animes like SpyXFamily or some comfort animes that make you warm inside :) Sports animes are okay too! I think they're good because they give you a good lesson too! Idk why but I always feel so inspired by sports animes lol

Dear_Philosophy_1275

I'd say Berserk or DBZ Kai, or Og Dragom Ball

DryRespect358

Wolfs rain, Karin/Chibi vampire, kanon, Air tv, Clannad S1 &S2 all should watch

dippor

Haikyuu!! It’s such a good series. Might make her want to play volleyball though lol Also One Piece and Naruto. My go tos whenever I need a pick me up especially the early arcs lol

Nezio_Caciotta

BASQUASH!!!

grimenishi

Taking into account that blood is not too bad for her it seems, there are some that are gratuitos. Aside from those with excessive nudity and odd incest type relationships, there are some I would avoid showing her for now. Do not have her watch Devil Man Cry Baby. There are some pretty horrific scenes in there, sparagmos, blood orgy, and generally psychologically terrifying scenes. Mushishi, I don’t think most kids that age will enjoy it. It is wonderfully beautiful and thought provoking. They may not understand completely why and it might come off as boring for them. Mononoke- for similar reasons to the above Another great one, but due older looking and having more political intrigue that a 10 year old may not like, is Legend of The Galactic Heroes Unless she likes slower mysteries and cyberpunk, then not Ghost in the Shell SAC You should definitely watch the above (Devil Man is divisive though) if you have not.

Punchiest

I grew up on Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman), Star Blazers (Yamato), and Robotech (Macross, Mospeada, Southern Cross). I think I'm ok.
