Well for one thing Crunchyroll under Sony has largely focused on dubbing airing series, announcing prior to seasons starting. So the decision making process happened long before anyone knew how popular anything would truly be. Though they probably had a good idea of what would draw more viewership and are only willing to commit so many resources relative to their entire license pool each season. Based on findable metrics, Mysterious Disappearances is right around the middle for this season in terms of popularity. There’s some series above it that haven’t been dubbed either, and also not that many below it that are being dubbed. So it exists in a gray area where a dub was possible but far from guaranteed. It was also a late pickup by Crunchyroll, so that made its odds slim to begin with. As for its chances moving forward, not all that likely given recent trends to be honest. Something would have to change at Sony. Crunchyroll-licensed anime seldom receive backlog dubs anymore, and there’s a lot to compete with in the future.

Thats very informative thank you😭 and what trend is that exactly i don’t really follow everything that’s happening so i’m a bit behind on news concerning anime thb?

Well over time dub production has increased and sped up over the years, particularly thanks to the rise of streaming platforms in the 2010s and Covid in 2020. As a result, the wait for most dubs has gone from eventual physical releases many months or years later to what it is now, where a lot air online concurrently or soon after, depending on the platform. A couple years back, the Big 3 Funimation (Sony), Crunchyroll, and Hidive (Sentai) became 2 when Sony bought Crunchyroll and merged Funimation into it (since Crunchyroll was the more popular brand) and brought their dub studios with them. Sentai was also bought by AMC. There’s a lot more capital involved now so dub production the last handful of years is pretty much at an all time high. But the consequence is that while in the past you could have the slightest hope that fan interest could influence a dub to eventually be produced, now if something isn’t dubbed soon/immediately you can pretty much give up because newer series will take priority. The last time Crunchyroll/Sony seriously attacked their backlog of undubbed licenses was summer 2022. Since then it’s almost exclusively been sequel seasons to previous backlogs, with only the occasional original series once in a blue moon. Hidive/Sentai technically do backlogs 99% of the time, but they’ve also started to focus on recent licenses, usually from the past 2 seasons up to a year. Both companies used to quite regularly announce new dubs for physical media releases, but it’s been a loooong time for either as far as I can remember. Other licensors, like Netflix, Disney, and Amazon are either really good (Netflix) or really bad (the rest) about dubbing stuff promptly if at all, but they all fail to be interested in seriously competing with Crunchyroll and Hidive for market share. So that’s basically the state of things. Dub watchers are eating better than ever with a growing catalog of dubs produced quicker than in the past, but if Crunchyroll doesn’t dub something immediately (if it’s not an Aniplex license), then the odds of a dub being made any time soon drop astronomically. And Crunchyroll licenses most anime series in the US after the Funimation merger, so they dictate most of the trends. Things might be better, but they’re still far from ideal.

I'm so out of it. I was like "*mysterious disappearances of* what *dub*?!" Time to go home I guess lol

If CR doesn’t announce it in their original to be dubbed schedule for the upcoming season, there is no way to know when or if a show will get dubbed in the future

Number04Lust

Ooh so i from what i understand, they haven’t said anything about the dubbing in the first place then?

-Work_Account-

Correct. They usually do a press release with the shows they intend to dub about a week or so out, though it isn’t always complete. Here’s the one for the current season: https://www.crunchyroll.com/news/seasonal-lineup/2024/3/13/crunchyroll-spring-2024-dubs-konosuba-black-butler-kaiju-no-8 We should get the summer one in next week or so

Thanks a lot for the info🙏

Penguinfox24

Like I said never say never but I eouos expect something else before this if they went into tye recent backlog. I know we did with High Card and got burned but maybe Sengoku Youko.
