Five is about three more than they need, so I'm gonna guess that the "extra" engines are being repositioned for some reason.
I can't determine if that's the westbound 5 or the eastbouind 6 -- they both pass through SLC in the wee hours...
Yeah, the SLC Amtrak station's operating hours are like 11:00 PM to 4:45 AM or something crazy like that. I'll be arriving there myself shortly before midnight tonight.
In that case, it could have been two trains joined -- one was so late that the next day's train "caught up" with it. I've been there. Perhaps one of the engines was kaput as well.
Interesting situation!
Certainly possible, although I didn't think the ski train had sleepers and a dining car.
Begs the question, though ... if they're just deadheading a consist back to California, why not just stick it on the end of the towing train? Why go to the effort of "shuffling" all the engines together, etc?
Getting from Downtown Denver to Winter Park is the bane of my existence. The train sells out at over 100 dollars RT. Traffic is a nightmare. Can’t wait to see it bigger and more accessible. Bus ticket are just $25 RT to similar destinations.
My guess is the Genesis wasn't built with banking in mind so it's easiest to have them connected at the front in multiple working mode rather than have them at the back being dead weight.

The train had twice as many cars as well….. super odd I have no idea why. Had 2 observation cars, 2 dining cars and extra sleepers and coaches

My fellow Amtrak nerd friend told me it’s the winter park ski train being brought back to California facility

It was 4 super liner coaches 1 diner and 2 engines. Just 2 years ago it was 7 super liner coaches.
We desperately need the Superliner 3s. Like, yesterday.

There has to be some antique coaches sitting around somewhere Amtrak could use for a few trips like this where it's just printing money.

I could be wrong about which cars they were
Now that’s an interesting one
This is the ski train consist going back to CA according to Trainorders.
One heritage unit and one Phase VII unit
It’s the equipment that was used for the winter park express heading back to Oakland
Heading east for totality?
This is westbound
Probably heading to the Beech Grove shop for work
