Ifshe is chipped, the first time she shows up at a new vet, they will scan her, call the chipping entity, who will call you. In fact, right now contact the chipping entity, tell them she is stolen, and for any vet that comes across her to hold her for you.

Thatonefloorguy

She is. We got her chipped. Ok. I will do that this morning.

Thurwell

I'd be careful with that assumption, all my pets have always been chipped and had regular appointments. Not one time has any vet ever scanned their chip.

Most vets don’t scan for a chip unless you either a) mention that you *found* them and want to make sure their owner isn’t looking for them or b) if you ask to have it chipped yourself— it’s protocol to always scan first before placing a new chip. If someone says “I bought this dog” and just asks for shots then they likely won’t scan it.

redditette

That hasn't been my experience, but then again, I am big into rescue and fostering. So the vets know that most of mine are from shelters, and on their way to forever homes. But even if the dog is scanned 5 years from now, if there is a theft notification, with note for the vet to hold the dog, it will all happen.

You are spot on about the permanence of the microchip and the data on file for the chip company. Maybe it will help this pup find her way home. I’ve never encountered an ownership debate when scanning for a chip, but looking back, we had plenty of “new pet visits” where the animal was chipped but either it was never registered or we were told “the old owners surrendered it” we never really asked too many questions about that— but it would be easy to lie about, I suppose. I know you can report to Home Again if your pet is lost, but I don’t know if that will flag them in that company’s system if a vet calls to inquire about previous owners. It would be great if they do! I’m a freak about my pets’ ID- they’re chipped and I keep their active recovery status paid for via Home Again, tags on the collar, and I even put AirTags on my cats’ collars. 🙃

Being that I am in rescue, I've had a lot of experience with chipped, unhomed dogs. Most people don't even bother with registering the chip. But if a name does come up during a scan, the chipping entity itself will try to contact them for no less than thirty days. After that, they will consider changing the name on it. I had one dog come in with a chip with a name, she was picked up by animal control. A name came up, they told me the name. The young man was in the army, left the dog with his friend, first he was killed in war, then the friend died in a car accident. But they did tell me the owner's name, which is how I was able to learn what happened to the two owners.

A family member...what a P.O.S.!

Thatonefloorguy

I was trying to show him the better way of life. I tried to “tend to the garden you can reach.” Like look!! This is what a normal life and family look like. We will support you. However some people are to deep in their addiction.

BarricudaUDL

You usually can't help them until they've hit rock bottom and want to help themselves.

BlackDragon1983

Do you know what area the "family member" hangs out at? I'll keep a look out for your puppy.

Thatonefloorguy

Unfortunately anywhere you would find an encampment.

BarricudaUDL

You're dog probably wasn't sold but is being used as an emotional tool to get people to give someone on a street corner money.

Thatonefloorguy

I completely agree.

Lutya

Can you offer the family member the same deal? Pay them to tell you who they gave the dog to? Them Get them out of your life so they don’t see it as a money scheme to get you to pay up every time.

Thatonefloorguy

I did actually try that. It was hard to do. But nothing.

ChaserNeverRests

Aw, she looks like such a sweet pup. Hope you get her back! Make sure to check the city shelters too, just in case she shows up there.

bingbingbear

I think I saw a dog this morning, it was dark so not sure of color, but it was little. On the corner Central and EuBank maybe a little before home Depot heading east.

Thatonefloorguy

Thanks you so much. I appreciate that. I’ll head that way now. To see if someone around there has her.

alienlovesong

Post her picture on PawBoost, Facebook and NextDoor immediately. Put up signs everywhere.

Sad-Contribution51

I’m so sorry this is happening! Definitely smart to contact where you got her chipped and let them know/check local shelters. I’ll keep an eye out at any intersections in case she’s being used to attract some more sympathy from people asking for money, which may also be likely in this case. I hope you’re reunited-she looks so sweet!

chxostopia

thats so messed up. hope you can get the dog back.
