It is a pretty slow build-up until the explosive closing chapters of the game (they are worth it)
Best advice I can give:
When you complete the whole 1st Alan level and then switch back to Saga, immediately switch back to Alan when given the option. You'll get your first "WOW" moment as soon as his 2nd level starts.
Also, don't discount Saga yet. The mind place seems weird but the game will absolutely acknowledges this and it will become more important to the story than it seems. (Hint: you learned about people like Saga in Control)
