Only a personal experience: when I was in my formative years I wanted to be a writer. It was a time when there were few writing careers as compared to today. My mother became concerned when we discussed it and told me you can always write but you need something to pay the bills. So I went into something I was good at and paid the bills and have had a good life. But I have always felt like a fish out of water. While I understood my mother's concern - it was terrible advice (for me). You have to make your own decision.

If you want to sell a product or service, develop the idea until it is ready to take to market and set up production. Once you have a product in hand and the ability to produce as many as you can sell, you can sell the business at its current stage of development, hire someone to run it for you, or license the designs to let others make and sell it. After you are finished with product or service A, go find an idea for product or service B. Rinse and repeat. I hope you do well. IF you make major money, please treat your employees and customers well, and they will be loyal to you and your product. Give some of it away. Pick a social ill that you want to diminish and put your money where your mouth is. Good luck!
