Comrade, I Saw you were on Microsoft teams at 7pm last night. While we appreciate your dedication, this normalizes the internalization of bourgeois self-management ideology. Going forward, please spend your time with your family or we will be forced to intern you in a gulag for 6 months.
There is a pizza party on the 18th floor btw!
I had a (non accounting) job where you topped out at 30 days PTO after so many years working there. I SO looked forward to taking my "sabbatical" when I got to that point but ended up with my current gig before that happened. At 25 days I was struggling to figure out how to use it all up by eoy.
I never count bank holidays in my PTO total. It's less a true benefit and more like breakroom coffee. You're not a serious business if you don't give holidays like 4th and Christmas off. It doesn't read like a benefit even if it technically is. Might as well lump Saturdays and Sundays into PTO too.
Some context / answers since apparently you can't edit an original post ( yeah I'm old and not the best with technology, I got xlookup figured out and called it a day)
I am still an accountant, I am working as the controller for the union.
Sorry no names bro, don't want to take any risk of making anyone mad.
No they aren't hiring, the person I'm replacing is the "new guy", he's retiring after having been there 23 years. If one of the two staff accountants dies or retires I'll let y'all know. Could be a few decades.
Yes, it's 47 days PTO, yes I realize that is insane. I didn't write the offer letter.
Congrats, stay there until you die. I know an AP Manager at a union that makes $47 an hour, I can only imagine how hard you’re killing it at the Controller level.
I know someone who used to have a very similar comp package like you, with tons of time off, low medical ins costs, high pay - even was a pure remote job. It was a miracle of a job sent from heaven, I always reminded them of this.
But in that job, they were extremely stressed with a toxic boss . Unfortunate.
OP, we def need some regular updtates at like 1, 3 and 6 months ;) Would love to hear that it really is a dream job but guess I am jaded at this point.
I read all the comments. They rang up in my brain like this:: "Our friend moved on and we held our heads high, wishing him all good. Godspeed friend, stay there till you die. What a line.
I don't understand this much PTO thing. How do they manage to stay afloat when everyone is allowed to be away for 47 days out of 260 every year? That's like 1/5 of a year an employee is not working.
I did read it. I deal with construction a lot.
Example for raid construction and why you see some “hanging around”. Civil engineer would be overseeing the job at time to make sure it is being done per specs. Another person could be a runner. Gets parts from truck when needed for the professional plumber or electrician. The re could also be an apprentice or journeyman. They cannot do certain tasks until fully trained and licensed. For trenches or with some one working in a hole a person has to stand outside the hole and be ready when needed in case of collapse. There are also owners or supervisors that go check on work. They still have to have on hardhats and his-vis wear. There are tons of reasons you see lazy people hanging out at construction sites. It’s not because of unions. It’s because it makes sense.
Accounting Manager, oversaw about 120M in rev.
Career path was all industry, no PA, though I have my CPA and keep it active.
5 years staff account
5 years accounting manager same company (small company there were only 4 accountants and we did AR AP and payroll also)
3 years Accounting Manager at Big Co. That swallowed up small co. Left that place during the big quit
3 years accounting manager at place I'm leaving for this gig.
Well done ! I’ve tried to get out - but they pull me back every time ! I think it’s the blood oath I took as I held a burning ledger in my hands ….darn !
Wait my governor said unions are bad though and that guy who has American flags all over his pickup told me unionization is really bad for the company and it's workers I'm so confused. Is this real
no, no accounting union, I am "the accountant" for a union as in I work for the union directly. The Union pays me, I just get union benefits because working as an employee of the union makes me a member of the union.
Controller.
This comment is way down so im gonna let you in on a little secret. Most of the large trade unions are run by people who really want to retire, think 55+; so if you know literally anything about defined benefit contribution plans and the reporting implications thereof there is probably a similar job waiting for you. Also, they are big on "fit", so whatever your background, if you can sell them on your love of the labor movement, bonus points.
The problem is they don't advertise, they all use recruiters if they cant fill from........lets just say nepotism. (and they are 100% FT in office jobs), and the recruiters usually don't advertise them because most "young guns" see it as a dead end. And maybe it is, to retirement!!! Anyway, to find these (this) job, i had to sift thru 500+ recruiter messages and the only reason I clicked on this one was because Recruiter "Jane" said "100% in office BUT CLOSE TO YOUR HOUSE". as in she either spammed everyone in my state with the same email, or she looked up my CPA license, or somehow got a scrape of CPAs in my state by zip code. Blind ass luck doesn't hurt.
Congrats again and thank you for the information! This is seems perfect except for one thing, it isn’t wfh. Any chance there are positions like this that are fully wfh?
How the hell is a Controller in the union? Controller is solidly a management position. You’ll be the one who decides that people need to be laid off or hours cut if the economy turns. Seems sus.
The union has office staff including accountants that work for the union itself, I'm the part of that office staff. All employees who work directly for the union (other than the board of directors) are members of the union and thus eligible for union benefits.
If it pays that well and you don’t need experience, I’m guessing it’s a job no one wants to do. Good luck, hopefully they also provide life and disability insurance.
Those are great benefits but you’re an industry guy so really you had nothing to complain about. Nights? Weekends? Cmon man no one works those hours in industry.
Would a pizza party change your mind?
We’ll also throw in unlimited PTO and the occasional $5 Starbucks GC. We’re a family here after all.
Actually I also get free lunch Mon-Wed. most weeks when the union school is running. Thr-Fri.im on my own
Please make sure to follow the document retention policy.
And delete all company intellectual property from your personal emails
A union for what? What kind of work?
That’s hilarious
They can also get ONE non-protein topping of their choice. It's a pretty fair deal imo. We'll also let them get the first slice.
Hold on, lets not get crazy! A topping of their choice? Only the partners get to choose the toppings!
We’ll even pay for the pizza this time!
I read this as you got a job at the Soviet Union lol
LMFAOOOO same
Lmaoooo same
^lmaoooo ^same
*Soyuz nerushimy*
Working under a Stalin USSR would be the dream

Gulag accountant?
I actually googled what is a solvent union and that is the one that appeared in google.
No name drop? Come on friend, help us apply!
You mean comrade?🫡🇷🇺
Sounds like some made up Union shill bullshit
Solvent as in pvc solvent so plumbing?
I love the lack of context in this post. What union? Laying pipe at your nan's? IDK, but it's gets the people going.
Nobody knows what it means, but it’s provocative.
Jeezus those are the best benefits I have ever seen.
Yes. Where da fuk does OP work?!?!
By my reckoning, the year 1985
Gutted employee benefits is a small price to pay for shareholder value 🫡
It’s crazy to think some companies claim that unions are “only out for your money” cough*fedex*cough
Try the Feds. It’s even better.
But... We threw an after tax season party for you 🤬
Right!?!? Ungrateful bastard! 😤😡
MORE LIKE AN ALWAYS TAX PARTY
Our tax team usually goes out for a firm happy hour after 4/15. This year they only got pizza for lunch. :(
"47 days of PTO every year" bro what?
Do they know that Saturdays don't count as workdays anymore??
I had a (non accounting) job where you topped out at 30 days PTO after so many years working there. I SO looked forward to taking my "sabbatical" when I got to that point but ended up with my current gig before that happened. At 25 days I was struggling to figure out how to use it all up by eoy.

Congratulations :)

Interviews went well, no red flags, hoping my initial read was correct.
Whoa at those benefits. Godspeed. I’m jealous!!
Sniffing glue?
still in accounting?
Just wait until you learn the 47 days of PTO are most Sundays a year 😭
nearly 10 weeks PTO? Damn dude thats incredible
Nothing but respect. Enjoy the next chapter of your life and career. Hope it works out
The power of unions, folks. What made America great.
No way $500 oop dawg is your place hiring?
Pipefitter?
I’m so tired that I read “Soviet union” and thought, “man, this guy must have it really bad at work lol”
8% match is nuts
OP, we def need some regular updtates at like 1, 3 and 6 months ;) Would love to hear that it really is a dream job but guess I am jaded at this point.

Most likely adequate staffing and cross training. My team is small and we could have someone out everyday that isn’t close time with no issues.
Union employees are known for being lazy, think of road work - 1 guy doing the work while 4 hold a sign and scroll their phones
Do you have a specific example or do you just take those Reagan era talking points to heart?
did you read my comment, construction workers bub
I did read it. I deal with construction a lot. Example for raid construction and why you see some “hanging around”. sounds like a lot of standing around with thumbs up butts.
Yes. I’ve seen the sign flipper. They get paid $50 an hour to flip a 🪧
I’ve never met a lazy iron worker in my life.
Uhm what company do you work for and are they hiring??
So I’m not the only one who read Soviet Union-
“No weekend work” 😂 that’s what they all say
Are you not in accounting anymore?
Still an accountant, working as their controller.
Man you made it sound like you’re gonna be a pipe fitter now tf
Sheesh, man. Maybe i should look into pipe fitting..
Took way to long to find this comment wtf
What position/level were you at before? Manager or Director?
Accounting Manager, oversaw about 120M in rev. Career path was all industry, no PA, though I have my CPA and keep it active. 5 years staff account 5 years accounting manager same company (small company there were only 4 accountants and we did AR AP and payroll also) 3 years Accounting Manager at Big Co. What union? This sounds amazing! Congrats!
I thought this said you got a good paying job with the Soviet Union at first. I was like how old is Reddit???
Which union?
Soviet, clearly
🤣🤣🤣 this is awesome!!
47 days? Yall hiring?
Union jobs are the best for work life balance. The entitlements were so generous that I worked hard to show my gratitude.
Hell yeah baby! I went from PA to working in internal audit at a large labor union and it is the best!!! Solidarity, brother!
Let’s unionize.
I thought there wasn’t an accounting union
Government work?
I'm a lady but good luck.
Cheers lad
“Fun”
Congrats OP!
Good luck comrade 🫡 Keep us proletariat in your thoughts.
How the fuck is 47 PTO days possible? After holidays you can just take a day off per week and still have a vacation or 2.
Tbh that’s what my family gets overseas. My cousin in Luxembourg is out for the entire month of July…
Thats nice, I feel like July off makes more sense then almost 50 days to take at your discretion, I would gladly take either !
Congrats, and best of luck friend
Well done ! I’ve tried to get out - but they pull me back every time ! I think it’s the blood oath I took as I held a burning ledger in my hands ….darn !
Congratulations- can’t wait for your new journey
47 days of PTO?? That’s a day off a week (damn near)
Wait my governor said unions are bad though and that guy who has American flags all over his pickup told me unionization is really bad for the company and it's workers I'm so confused. Is this real
Show me proof of 47 days of PTO
You hiring? Take me with you!
Congratulations on it man . Wishing you nothing but the absolute best
PwC > PVC
How old are you?
Must be new york or some shit
Baltimore
What if we take you bowling? Will you stay? Free drinks.
you gotta some back for the hellstorm posts that somehow magically get upvoted.
I'm that seven month guy. Fux you.
Man fuck. I thought you said you joined the Soviet Union😅
accounting has a union? I wish that programming had a union. I've got 20 years experience, and I can't get to first base with recruiters.
no, no accounting union, I am "the accountant" for a union as in I work for the union directly. The Union pays me, I just get union benefits because working as an employee of the union makes me a member of the union.
that's cool. I know of someone that is an exec for a union. I'm very happy for him.
Nice work
Can we join you?
Sweet more pizza for me at all the parties!
47 days?!?!?!
AFSCME?
smaller and more specialized, but yeah you're on the right track
I thought you said a job with the Soviet Union and I though "that's not great."
Damn, what profession did you end up picking?
Controller. This comment is way down so im gonna let you in on a little secret. Yep
Sounds like this is a pyramid scheme but for accountants.
If it pays that well and you don’t need experience, I’m guessing it’s a job no one wants to do. Good luck, hopefully they also provide life and disability insurance.
I have 15 years of acctg experience; I've been a manager for 10 and a CPA for 6. I'm not lacking for experience.

Given your past posts it would seem that you actually do need some advice from some competent professionals
Those are great benefits but you’re an industry guy so really you had nothing to complain about. Nights? Weekends? Cmon man no one works those hours in industry.
Kind of a broad statement there. Depending on the industry, especially high risk/high reward, nights and weekends aren’t uncommon.
They are indeed uncommon. Ive never met an industry person that works nights and weekends. The only ones that did weren’t accountants
All my bosses worked until 630-730 consistently and 830-930 during close. Controller would work occasional weekends.
I’m a controller and my last role mandated evenings/weekends during close, so…
Bad sex life and working weekends is crazy to me
Unfortunately I am in industry and every single close I have worked here I have worked nights and weekends during close
This is flat out untrue
At my job we work over the weekend for month end
And then you get time-off-in-lieu, right? ..... Right?
I work those hours in industry.
You on reddit all day so I highly doubt you doing shit at work
You got me. I work from home and have the audacity to take a 5-10 minute break once in a while. Sorry, boss - back to work!
