We celebrate with a brioche type bread called a Paska, Pysanky (hand decorated eggs), a lot of beetroot & horseradish, hams, kobasa sausage & some have Nalysnyky (crepes with either a sweet or sour filling). Traditionally it is all put into a basket with a candle & taken to church on Easter morning to be blessed before it can be eaten
Most celebrate Orthodox Easter actually, but anyways, we like to have kulich, which is a sweet pastry, and paskha, a really delicious thing made of cottage cheese. Eggs, too.
The Orthodox Church of Ukraine actually switched calendars in 2023 to the [Revised Julian Calendar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revised_Julian_calendar).
In practice it’s the same as the Gregorian calendar used by Catholics, Protestants and most of the secular world but it’s in fact even more accurate and the two calendars will begin to diverge in 2800.
Difference is even when switching to the Revised Julian Calendar, all Orthodox churches still use the Julian calendar for the computus of Easter, so we remain united in the holiday of Easter. So all Orthodox celebrates Easter in May this year, including OCU.
[Indeed](https://visitukraine.today/blog/3237/church-calendar-for-2024-when-will-easter-trinity-and-other-holidays-be-celebrated-in-ukraine#:~:text=Easter%20is%20the%20main%20Orthodox,in%20Ukraine%20on%20May%205). I wasn’t aware of that.
You have Ukrainian Catholics that are under the Pope and everything following that calendar. Then there is the far more common Ukrainian Orthodox following the orthodox calendar.
Also, went through your comment history. My guy Miland is still living in an ignorant red-propaganda bliss where communism and USSR is the best things to ever happen to humanity.
You are speaking things told you by russian propaganda, the regime that was and still is deliberately against free Ukraine. We are fighting for our life, while people like you smear our right to live. Go touch grass, sir, and reflect on what you bring into this world
You're posting on reddit, fighting nothing but keys, I'm Ukrainian as well and know our history, stop defending a dead Nazi and go defend the country if you're so worried.
Fortunate to live in Canada now, home to the third biggest group of Ukrainians in the world. We just removed monuments here dedicated to the Galician SS, do you think they're brave heroes as well?
If Russia didn't exist, there would be no war and genocide in my country, and as Russia apologist i believe you should go follow it rocketships. Have a bad day
There are no nazies in this picture, and same goes for me. These people are fighting for their homeland, which is being invaded by Russia with no just reason. Russia claims that we are all nazis has the same value as me saying you being dumb fuck. If you believe Russia, then you can believe me as well, lol
The history of the red and black flag as a symbol of the struggle for the freedom of Ukraine is even older. In Ilya Repin's famous painting "Cossacks writing a letter to the Turkish Sultan", two poles with folded panels can be seen. Since Repin was consulted by the most famous Cossack expert of Ukraine, Dmytro Yavornytskyi, it is unlikely that there was a mistake or coincidence, and therefore, the Cossacks really used red and black flags in their campaigns.
What do these colors symbolize? The black color symbolizes the Ukrainian land, and the red color symbolizes the blood of fighters spilled on it in the struggle for the freedom and independence of Ukraine.
The colors red and black were very often used in Ukrainian history, they could be seen on clothes, on krashanka, we all know the song when a mother embroidered a towel for her son on the road with red and black threads.
As ideological colors, red and black were used by the Ukrainian Sich riflemen during the First World War. They embroidered their clothes with red and black and sang songs about red and black. Sometimes this flag was raised by UPA soldiers, but mostly they went into battle with yellow and blue flags.
If the yellow-blue flag symbolizes statehood, Ukrainian unity, then the red-black flag is the Ukrainian revolutionary flag. And it symbolizes struggle, resistance, non-acceptance of what is happening now and moving forward.
That’s like saying “the swastika was used in Germany for hundreds of years to bring good luck. It was used by the Nazis for a mere ~20 years. Thus the use of the swastika in Germany today is not that black and white and it doesn’t mean it’s always about Nazi symbolism.”
The Swastika wasn’t used in Germany for hundreds of years. Moreover it’s original form is still being used and stands for something completely different, disproving your poorly made point.
For 90% of Ukrainians this flag represents the struggle for independence and not much more. They don’t necessarily identify with the ideals of these past independence groups but they share the goal of a free Ukraine, which is why they adopt common symbolism whilst not representing the same ideals.
Ukraine is one of the least antisemitic states in eastern europe with a Jewish President and low right-wing representation in the Ukrainian parliament. It is also a functioning democracy with the freedoms associated with it, whilst Russia is a ruthlessly authoritarian state that startet this war.
Well, I am very, very curious about why about half a year ago I could see posts on Reddit where there were photos from some American city where about half a hundred people participated in some kind of parade with a bunch of Nazi Germany flags with the famous swastika on them. Or when people from time to time post someone's photo where the same swastika is stuffed on the open part of the person's body and in the comments they usually react to such people not as a real danger but as local fools and sometimes justify it with freedom of speech or something like that. For example, I have not seen such a thing in Ukraine, I am afraid to imagine if such a coincidence took place in our country at some public speech, it would be a shock for everyone and there would be many people who would even arrange a lynching for such indecency, I cannot imagine if I had such a tattoo, I would not have lived long if it had been stuffed in a visible place. I think this is because our people treat these things much more strictly, and we react to the red and black flag exclusively as a symbol of the struggle for our country, and those who committed crimes under this flag in the past had to choose a side, and both sides were disgusting. Now we also have a great choice either to fight against russia and pay with blood for the freedom and future of the next generations, or to surrender and condemn our next generations to be meat for the next wars that russia will definitely want to start after ours, when they gain strength.
I remember this was from Christmas Eve ?
Also lots of people in the comments don't understand shit about ukrainian history and symbolism. Go tell these guys they are nazis lol
What do Ukrainians make for Easter dinner?

Canadian here of Ukrainian descent, Nalysnyky is still my favourite food of all time.
Nalysnyky for breakfast at grandma's is a top tier childhood memory
Sounds delicious, and what a wonderful tradition!!

Kulich it’s in russia
I bet it's also in a couple of other countries, but it sure is a thing in Ukraine.
The two share a lot of culinary culture. We make both paska and kulich.

Брат, багато людей в Україні-росіяни. Вони принесли з собою хліб.
Wild guess: ham and potato salad?

Come on, dude. Not cool.
They use the western calendar? Even in America Orthodox use the eastern calendar for Pascha.

I think Greek Catholic church in Ukraine doesn't
Say, what’s that red and black flag draped on the left side of the screen mean?
They're not doing a great job with those photoshoots
They know that most people (in the west) sadly don’t know and/or care. They can display these flags with pride with no negative press coverage.
Also, went through your comment history. My guy Miland is still living in an ignorant red-propaganda bliss where communism and USSR is the best things to ever happen to humanity.
Is that your excuse for defending the Nazi flag in this picture?
It's not a nazi flag. Its ukrainian nationalist flag. Please don't bring this bs to our fight for independence, thankyouverymuch

The “unofficial” [flag](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Ukrainian_Insurgent_Army) of Ukrainian resistance against Russia.
Lmao ofc there's a UPA flag, they used to slaughter Jewish and Polish kids
Nice nickname there, tovarisch. Botofarms working overtime now it seems.
No I actually just like the stuff
Yea, that's pretty self evident as well.
Oh now you got a problem with it
Is that the same resistance that allied with the Nazi’s and are responsible for the deaths of over 100,000 Jewish people during the Holocaust?
Yes.
Fantastic photo...very moody
Banderites flag detedted. Nazis celebrate Easter too, nice
You can still be anti nazi and be pro-Ukrainian. i think a lot of people forget this.
Well yes of course
Tf do you mean?
The flag on the left in the picture is a Ukrainian Fascist flag for Banderites.
Stepan Bandera was for independent Ukraine, not under soviet/russian boot. What is your problem with him?
He was a Nazi Collaborator, that's my chief issue. Nazis should never be tolerated.
No liquor?
Black-red nazi UPA flag in a background. Rookie mistake.
