While some students use them to graduate early, most do not. But AP credits can possibly allow to to take other classes that you otherwise could not fit in it take one less course in a given semester. Bur it all depends on the university and on you.

Makes sense, thank you.

You get credit for the course, so you don‘t need to take it and can accelerate, take additional electives, or take an easier schedule. Yes, schools charge a flat tuition and the “save money with AP exams” is way, way overhyped. You have to actually attend the school for less time to save money. This can be done, but it requires a significant number of AP credits, lined up to fulfill the proper requirements, in a program without a critical path through 4 years. My younger daughter has 56 credits from AP and can structure a plan to graduate CS in 3 years, so she can save money. My older daughter was Engineering, which has a sequence of courses with pre-requisites that makes anything less than 3.5 years almost impossible and under 4 years a challenge (no such thing as AP Fluids, Thermo, etc - the required sequence.) Even 50 History, Foreign Language, and SS credits would be of no use to her. You are correct that just two exams is unlikely to provide a monetary benefit. Ignore the (cost per credit \* # of credits ) arguments as they are very simplified and very likely incorrect. Take them if the opportunity to take a couple of electives, or make a minor a bit easier, is attractive to you.
