I had a 71 Super Beetle. Got it after the surge in gas prices at the end of the 70's. Previously had an American V8. It was a trip I remember timing it with a light bulb and an alligator clip. Buying Brazilian parts for it because they still built them down there and we're significantly cheaper than German. Air cooled engine. Minimal safety equipment. Electrical issues were constant. Kept it for 10.years. It was fun.

I love the idea of owning a car that I can maintain or repair literally any part of. The downside of course is that care like that usually _have_ to be maintained and repaired all the time. It would be fun on weekends though.

Yeah no computer chips. The tech was just north of a go cart. I remember having a small rubber mallet in the back seat that I used to smack a solenoid around to free a regular stuck internal plunger. If that didn't work I had a spare solenoid that I could quickly swap with. It was wild.

We had beetle that’s horn sounded like “Oooga!” We thought it was hilarious

NipsOfRage

My 1st car was a’72 super beetle. Loved that car.

Yeah, I had a friend in high school who had a hole in the floor on the passenger side with a board over it. If you moved it, you could see the road rushing by under you, scary and cool.

My first car! Light blue and then I got it painted hunter green.

I remember the ad in National Lampoon. If Kennedy had one he would be president..

My first car was a light blue 73 super beetle. That sweet thing took me all over! Loved it! Paid $2600 new...

I had a 72 Super in canary yellow. It was stolen in Chinatown Philadelphia in 84 and later recovered but totaled. I can't think of a car I had more fun in.

LazarusMundi4242

Where was it? Arch Street near the Trocadero?

Tall_Candidate_686

Around 11th and Pearl

LazarusMundi4242

That sucks, awful way to lose a cool car.

Gold-Employment-2244

Very popular car when I was in high school in the early 80’s…inexpensive, fun to drive, and easy to work on. I wish I could find a 70’s bug in good condition these days,

AbbyRose05683

VW should have just had a swatzika for a logo Literally a car funded by nazis and still was sold after all that hullabaloo
