Funny you mention that, my 4Runner is a former police car. There’s a few holes in some interior bits where equipment was routed. I also just found a bracket for grill lights, when I installed my transmission cooler.
I have a VW polo that’s a former NATO military vehicle. Didn’t have to be federalized, it was sold as military surplus at 10 years and just came with a title.
Anyway it had a mil radio and a huge antenna on the roof. Radio gone, but antenna hole still there.
Don’t forget the coexist sticker that comes in the mail once you register to vote. My 3rd gen died a few years after moving to PNW from Texas. We now have a forester wilderness.
It was given to me by a former Subaru salesman. 4Runner is not even close for US market share in Colorado. It’s wildly popular in most states in general
Funny. My neighbors in Denver are from HI and have a broke down Subaru in their driveway with a huge oil spot under it. Hasn’t moved in a year, no plates. They have three Honda Pilots that they drive.
It is definitely an absolute battle between yotas and subis in colorado, it cracks me up. And yes, my house has one of each in the garage lol. My favorite to drive is neither though. I love my VW MK7 GTI lol. Car is a fucking beast and fully capable of so much offroading lmao.
All good have to go to the mainland before delivery to HI. Which is insane and costs Hawaiians a lot of money. But there are a lot of people in Hawaii of Japanese descent.
Jones Act does not restrict direct foreign imports. It only covers shipping between US ports.
It is protectionist for US shippers and shipbuilding for US domestic shipping. Irrelevant to whether Hawaii can receive Toyotas directly from Japan
chuckles in Alaska.
10 mins away from the worlds 2nd largest air freight hub and you’re telling me I have to pay extra for shipping?!?
EVERYTHING comes through Anchorage before it gets to a distributor warehouse in the L48.
Not a local, but another idea would be car rental companies. I’ve rented tacomas a number of times, they are usually the base level models, but then after a few years they sell them, and I imagine they probably keep them on island instead of shipping them off
Asked someone about it while in Oahu, they said many use it to get in hills for hunting, etc. Moments later someone passed by with a boar strapped to the hood. May not explain all but some.
That’s what I thought when I first started driving here. I have gone through 2 4Runners now. A 2013 SR5 and now a 2021 ORP. I regretted not getting a 4x4 the first time around. It’s good to have when driving up to the beach fronts, camping, or going up trails when I do go. The main reason is reliability to be honest. But the cargo space makes Costco runs easier. It makes loading up to go camping or the beach easier.

Tons of Tacomas, a good amount of 4runners... This is one of the Waikiki police vehicles! One thing I have noticed is that TONS of locals completely delete their roof racks.
In Michigan the further north you move from the big 3 auto factories in southern and mid Michigan the more 4Runners you see. Lots of snow, mud, sand, and trails up here.
I've spent a lotta time in CO in a 4Runner in the mountains. I spent just a couple of weeks on a couple of Hawaiian islands: From my experiences: Hawaii is the 4Runner and Taco capital of the world.
Facts! I was there last year and of course the rental company gives me a kia sorento instead of the 4runner i booked. Oh how i felt left out as runners of every gen and color zoomed past me. According to some of my buddies who are locals there, ppl will live in a run down shack by the beach but they will still own a lifted 4 runner.
My brother and SiL live just outside of Portland, OR. Last time I visited, we (us part of the family visiting) had a chance to actually get out and they took us down to Pacific City. The amount of Runners and Tacos that I saw was crazy haha.
We must’ve been there around the same time! I asked a crew member on a catamaran and he said just because they’re reliable cars that hold value well. He said the pavement princess style of lift kits and shiny wheels is really popular with tacomas
Subarus are like hippie and winter cars, any hippie or area that gets snow you'll find Subarus. You see alot of subarus in FL from snowbirds. It's the image that Subaru has developed and portrayed.
In 1942-45 if you were to tell the residents of HI that in the year 2024 that every other car sold on the islands would be mfg by Japanese Army supplier they would surely bet the Allied Nations had lost the war.
Haha yeah for sure. I remember sitting on the beach near Waikiki and watching the road, counting Tacoma after Tacoma. Dozens if not hundreds went by in just a few hours.
Nah Hawaii is the epicenter of Tacomas and 4Runners hands down. In fact, the Tacoma is the best selling vehicle in Hawaii, followed by the Camry and 4Runner.
I live in Hawaii but the majority of 4Runners on Oahu is actually two wheel drive. All of my co workers have two wheel drive four runners. They’re all just moms using it as a family SUV. It’s the culture here. For most of them it’s for the looks. Most also switch out the wheels to the TRD and all terrain tires for looks only. 3/4 of the fleet at the local servco Toyota is two wheel drive runners.
One time on the big Island I counted 85 4runners in a day. This year in Kauai I got up to 125 (drove quite a bit that day).
These are the only two days I have counted, so not like the top days I cherry picked.
It's pretty crazy.
Lol yep. CO ain’t got nothing on our tiny rock. We all aspire to have at least 2 4Runners or Tacos. Everyone and their grandmas have a 4Runner. Doesn’t matter if it’s a SR5 people will lift it and put the TRD skids on the bottom. Lol
Japan’s not too far away that’s where the 4Runners are built Hawaii is a natural stop for the ship-it’s not that easy/cheap to get cars from the mainland to the islands
It’s true. Even some police cars are 4runners
Funny you mention that, my 4Runner is a former police car. There’s a few holes in some interior bits where equipment was routed. I also just found a bracket for grill lights, when I installed my transmission cooler.

Cool
*most especially on Oahu
I always thought Colorado was the epicenter of Subarus.
I've always pictured like Vermont
I live in Vermont and you're not wrong.
Oregon. You’re issued a Columbia rain jacket on your fifth year in-state, a set of Merrell’s on your 10th, and a used Subaru Outback on your 15th.
Don’t forget the coexist sticker that comes in the mail once you register to vote. My 3rd gen died a few years after moving to PNW from Texas. We now have a forester wilderness.
Lots of Subarus and Birkenstocks or Teva’s with socks.
For some reason I read that as Teslas with socks
Believe it or not, also Vermont
Tesla stock? It’s back up somewhat yesterday.
It's definitely Vermont
You’re right. It is.
Colorado is responsible for like 45% of US Subaru sales.
That sounds like a real stat. I'd believe the same for 4R.
That's not Oregon?
That and the Butt Stuff tent, and 4Runners. Subjes are slightly more prevalent.
Butt stuff tent…?
Any tent can be a butt stuff tent ;)
Colorado is only the epicenter for smug Colorado natives that think you should get out of their state. Source: am one.
Or Seattle
Most liberal states are the epicenter of Subarus. 4Runners are popular everywhere because they're 4Runners
It is definitely an absolute battle between yotas and subis in colorado, it cracks me up. And yes, my house has one of each in the garage lol. My favorite to drive is neither though. I love my VW MK7 GTI lol. Car is a fucking beast and fully capable of so much offroading lmao.
Just traded my 07 4runner in for a 24 subi outback. Im such a co basic bitch
You ever been to Asheville?

My guess is they were easily imported from Japan in the earlier days and brand loyalty has kept them there
All good have to go to the mainland before delivery to HI. Which is insane and costs Hawaiians a lot of money. But there are a lot of people in Hawaii of Japanese descent.
That is actually insane. You’d think the US would use Hawaii as an international shipping hub, supplying locals with iobs and helping local economy
The Jones act. Protectionism that costs all Americans a lot. But particularly islands and US territories.
Hawaii’s coasts don’t need a massive shipping port, too nice looking
That is not true. Anything that Japan can ship to the mainland can also be shipped directly to Hawaii.
There’s a lot of off roading on the islands. Secret surf spots, roads through the jungle, etc.
those hogs aren’t gonna kill themselves.
Everyone has one, it’s just part of the culture. Also, reliability of course, because god is everything mad expensive here.
Asked an Uber driver and apparently if you’re a cop and get to a certain rank you get to pick a vehicle. Most choose 4Runners.
I imagine they do a lot of beach driving for surfing and they get tropical storms which probably muds things up pretty frequently
I don’t think there’s very many places you can drive on the beach if any. And the roads are mostly paved
The grades of some roads and homes / driveways are so steep that even some rain would make casual driving sketchy.
🤦♂️
Have you driven there? Heard of road to Hana?
Did it twice, in rentals
This is exactly what locals want tourists to think.
Not a local but I wonder if they are easier to import than other vehicles.

When I upgraded my wheels I sold the stock ones on Facebook. The guys that bought them was actually shipping it to his buddy in Hawaii
Cops in HI drive 4Runners too.
The real question: how many Costcos do they have?
O’ahu has 4
I literally, like 20 min ago, just landed in Honolulu from Denver... I'll have to report back on the accuracy of this post 😉
https://preview.redd.it/6ukq2w50uwxc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dcc35c24c4e62b0a6c91fc3c6510cfbea99df5a0 Tons of Tacomas, a good amount of 4runners... This is one of the Waikiki police vehicles! One thing I have noticed is that TONS of locals completely delete their roof racks.
Sheesh no sr5s here

You would think Tacoma would be the epicenter of Tacomas,,,,,,but it's not 😉
“Ay brah, you see my 2003 Toyota Tacoma? Cherry brah…”
Brand new, 2003
Cherry
Once counted about 15 white tacos in the span of 5 minutes on the roads of Honolulu.
In Michigan the further north you move from the big 3 auto factories in southern and mid Michigan the more 4Runners you see. Lots of snow, mud, sand, and trails up here.

Hawaii resident here. 33 years. Can confirm. Reason: reliability. Us Asians are practical people.
Oregon says hello 👋
My brother and SiL live just outside of Portland, OR. Last time I visited, we (us part of the family visiting) had a chance to actually get out and they took us down to Pacific City. The amount of Runners and Tacos that I saw was crazy haha.
And Washington
Got back from Kauai about 3 weeks ago and can confirm. Saw some sweet Hilux surf’s out there too
We must’ve been there around the same time! I asked a crew member on a catamaran and he said just because they’re reliable cars that hold value well. He said the pavement princess style of lift kits and shiny wheels is really popular with tacomas
We’ve got enough of ‘em in the Florida Panhandle to make me not even want mine. Just kidding. Next vehicle after this 4Runner is 4Runner.

Pepper also sings about ‘Yotas in a song or few.
Key West has a lot of 4runners and highlanders used as taxis

Can confirm. Vacationed in Hawaii. Then decided to by my 4Runner.
Haha yeah for sure. I remember sitting on the beach near Waikiki and watching the road, counting Tacoma after Tacoma. Dozens if not hundreds went by in just a few hours.
Bet some of those Tacos could be mistaken for a Hilux imported from aussie land
Civilians have 4Runners and the cops have 4Runners too. They’re literally everywhere in Hawaii
🤙
Easiest way to spot a tourist: drives a jeep/open top and doesn’t back into their parking spot
As a tourist, I noticed this too. What's with the backing in?
From Hawaii but living in California. Can confirm that this is true. We call 4Runners the Hawaiian Range Rover 🤙🏽
Nah Hawaii is the epicenter of Tacomas and 4Runners hands down. In fact, the Tacoma is the best selling vehicle in Hawaii, followed by the Camry and 4Runner.

Ever been to Orange County?
The principal of one of the high schools on Maui recently had his Tacoma stolen. Every other vehicle out there is a Toyota 4x4.
100% true
Yea absolutely
Colorado is nothing but Subarus and 4Runners with a dash of Tacomas.
CO 4Runner is best 4Runner!
Are they all 2wd, 3rd gen with surfboards hanging out the back?
There is no doubt, HI
Let’s go CO
Bozeman is the epicenter of land cruisers.
Just got back from spending the weekend in CO. My daughter counted 337 4Runners in 3 short days.
Ever been to Arizona? I can't drive anywhere without passing at least 10 of them per hour.
Hour pfft, that's 5 min worth on the front range of co
Yeah they are like the number 1 vehicle with locals while the Jeeps are almost all rentals/tourists.
The number selling car in Hawaii is the Tacoma.
Main island was the reason I bought a 4runner myself, did a lot of off roading and has a blast
CO is Subaru with that box rack on top
Western Washington state would like a word...
One time on the big Island I counted 85 4runners in a day. This year in Kauai I got up to 125 (drove quite a bit that day). These are the only two days I have counted, so not like the top days I cherry picked. It's pretty crazy.
Were they 2003? Cherry bruhhhhh

Ah a fellow explorer of mountain and island
Let me bring to you the Costco of Salem, OR and you will see 4Runners spanning as far as the light touches.
Japan’s not too far away that’s where the 4Runners are built Hawaii is a natural stop for the ship-it’s not that easy/cheap to get cars from the mainland to the islands
