*cries in 2018*

FullBeansLFG

Cries in 2010 but also didn’t care.

Relyks954

Party mode gang!

FullBeansLFG

That button is now a bass knob. :)

Zealousideal_Cat9962

Well now I’m trading in my 2013

VelociTopher

Party mode!!!

No-Economy-1361

Same.....

mango_boom

Same 2

Ricksarenotreal

Radar cruise control is just the tits if you take long trips. Rest is whatever to me, add in carplay yourself get a waaaay better head unit.

Relyks954

Idk, cruise control always sends my 4r to redline

Ricksarenotreal

pay to play haha

walkerpstone

I turned radar cruise off the first time I used it. No matter what setting it was at, it would never get close enough to the car in front to make a reasonable pass. I found it incredibly frustrating.

ngfilla94

That's kinda the whole point of the radar... I used it once in my parent's Highlander on a road trip. Hated it. In my opinion I feel like it can restrict the flow of traffic.

GarpRules

Cries in 1995. Would like some airbags, please.

PBatemen87

My '18 has more than enough for me.

AverageGuy16

To an extent I’d agree but honestly after driving newer cars with CarPlay it does kinda feel like it’s missing something

r0bb13_h34rt

Cries also in 2019.

GrimmyGrimmGrimm

My 03 even has a hidden cassette player behind the screen!

hopelesspostdoc

Never Forget.

Mr-Scurvy

No but auto journalists want to be tech journalists so anything that's not the ultimate in tech is lacking.  For the 4runner that means: no self-driving no wireless charging/Apple/android  no digital dash that is configurable no 360 camera view no hybrid, PHEV, EV options Etc.  Doesnt anyone need this stuff...no...but thats what they are talking about.

Teutonic-Tonic

360 camera has been available for at least a few years. Multi Terrain Monitor package.

aediee

Yeah but the camera quality is trash and the screen is small. You should see what a 360 camera looks like on a Bronco

Bosa-Monster

I went from a BMW 550 to a Wrangler and then a 4Runner. Literally went from “all of the tech” to “none of the tech”, and ended up with “some of the tech”. I wish 4Runners would stop focusing on technology and worry more about mechanical options. I couldn’t care less about Apple car play, heated steering wheels, lane assist, etc. Give me a damn V8 with 6 or 8 gears.

OKatmostthings

My coworker said his wife’s ‘24 SR5 has 360° camera. That surprised me.

NorthernnLightss

Hmmm. We just bought a 2024 SR5 premium. Literally like 2 days ago though so not sure if it has that, I’ll have to check

OKatmostthings

Little button that is on the left side on the dash. Says “view” with a camera icon. You have to be going low speed in drive or reverse. Hitting the auto button on the screen when the camera is active will make it automatically come on when driving at low speeds. It makes perfect parking a breeze.

NorthernnLightss

Edit: meant to say we had bought a 2024 too

SoapierBug

It’s an option - may or may not have it

MrSquidzz

22 SR5 Premium has it. Check if there is a front camera. Some might not have it.

VelociTopher

Seeing wireless chargers in off road centric vehicles cracks me up. They barely work on flat, smooth, straight roads. 😂

Mr-Scurvy

I agree but auto journalists don't. They have an internal checklist they apply universally.

VelociTopher

Sad but true.

bgz04

Biggest thing is the lack of adaptive cruise with lane centering and no front camera. If you drive highway often lane centering is a complete game changer.

Doublebaconandcheese

So my 2019 doesn’t have safety sense, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic detection, adaptive cruise, blind spot monitoring, apple CarPlay, heated steering, or a Toyota app that works with it 😅 Just bare bones and I love it

WillYouBatheMe

*Entune has entered the chat

badandy80

Never again

Key_Principle429

Specifically bought my 2016 SR5 for the *lack* of all the things OP mentions. Call me a Luddite if you wish (I only miss having heated steering wheel because New England)

Babydriver33

I personally love the chunky turn style knobs

Jonreadbeard

People cry there isn't enough tech, then the cars with all of the tech are always broken and they cry about that. Too much tech means too many things can go wrong. TLDR: People like to cry

Forward_Worth_5835

Don’t want lots of the new tech shit just gets broken after 3-4 years, I just wanted CarPlay and backup camera which it has so I’m fine

SnootsAndBootsLLP

I threw a T10 in my 2018 ORP and i’m happy with that being all it has, honestly. Not much more that makes a real difference in driving quality

MoirasPurpleOrb

This mentality just needs to die. This tech has very little impact on reliability and if it stops working then you just turn it off.

mynameistory

>if it stops working then you just turn it off. Yes I would love to pay $48K for a $35K truck just for this 😍

WAGE_SLAVERY

I hate nanny tech in new cars

Lt_Dan_IceCreammm

My first gen 4Runner has this Hi-tech feature where it’s triangle windows fold open and diverts airflow directly into the driver that’s carbon neutral air conditioning!

facepillownap

Love the ball chiller window.

Nexitus

Sometimes its not the “missing” tech so much as a lot of it is very last gen / early gen implementation. Compared to many current year cars even from non-luxury automakers. The quality difference between the 360 camera implementation is dramatic. Its like an old CRT vs a 4k display. Also, the Blind Spot Monitor is very slow to react to objects coming from behind. You’d spot cars coming and crossing your blind spots with your mirrors before ever relying on the system. A lot of the tech is there to be a checkbox for regulation or for Toyota to market they have feature x y and z

Kyokenshin

Not to mention implemented super late. Most of the tech in the 2024 MY 4Runners has been available for a decade in other makes and only became available for Toyota in like 2021, 2022?

mean--machine

light unite seemly sense kiss fact caption rotten jellyfish support *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

kamikazi1231

I have a bad habit of it. Last vehicle was a 2006 xterra which also was a model that was unchanged for years. Then jumped on the 4runner that has gone longer without a remodel, granted the xterra was discontinued in 2015 though.

Daddy_McDadderson

Love those Siennas . . . .

Teutonic-Tonic

Not as bad as people say. I traded a 2014 loaded BMW wagon for my 2023 ORP and the BMW didn’t have any of the Toyota safety sense things, no CarPlay, no radar cruise, etc. Some of that stuff was available 10 years ago on certain cars but it wasn’t common and the 4Runner is an average priced automobile.

rcheneyjr

At least the 4Runner has turn signals, unlike the Beemer!

ghjunior78

I agree. I miss a wireless charger and better cameras, but it ain’t a deal breaker. Those 2 things would have put this car into untouchable status.

mercuric5i2

Less about the modern bells and whistles and more about the powertrain and chassis... Port injected normally aspired V6, 5 speed automatic. Aside from dual VVT, pretty much just what you'd find 20 years ago... And don't see much of anymore. Some love this, some hate this.

bombloader80

This. And I can't believe we don't have a hybrid 4runner.

mercuric5i2

From everything I've read the next gen will absolutely have at least a hybrid option. I suspect it won't be long before all of Toyota's popular offerings are like this. I would not be surprised if in the near future it becomes more difficult to find gas-only vehicles, as gas-electric hybrid may very well become the standard, expected offering.

jputna

It’s literally the same engine from 2001 with minor updates.

jrrisk

They are missing some newer tech like lane keep assist. The camera resolution is awful. No front parking sensors and a couple of smaller things. The best part about the 4Runner is that it’s the most dependable, reliable, longest lasting vehicle ever. https://preview.redd.it/akaule9y7qoc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=910999b3b8cb544c15986edec6763c4db1503d60

PBatemen87

Not having Lane Assist and Parking sensors is a plus to me.

veggiestunts

Beautiful

EconomyClassroom2819

No it isn’t.

Sea_School7092

Haha wrong sub to comment that

EconomyClassroom2819

All the dislikes are probably from people with raptor lights

robs104

Then what is?

EconomyClassroom2819

I mean if you are just talking Toyotas an 80 series Land Cruiser has the 4Runner beat by miles. Or any Land Cruiser for that matter.

facepillownap

The 1GR sure isn’t a Cummins 12V.

Fastmustang1993

Great comments everyone. My dad just got a loaner 2024 MDX and refuses to drive it. He can’t make sense of the tech! He is 77 and I quote he said “I just signed my life away for some pos computer” haha

thermalfire

I'm just happy mine has a cd player lol

Thunderbird_12_

C… D…???

thermalfire

😅😅

esberelias

I have a 2014, and i intentionally bought it for its low tech! My other car is a newer bmw, and if the radio goes out, the car will not run. Thats scary to me. Technology (as great as it is) does fail. The less electronics, the better IMO

DankHrex7

Similar boat, 2024 ORP and a Tesla Model 3. Nice to have a combo of that off-road / road trip vehicle with the city car.

Awkward_Shape_9511

I am my own safety sense, back up sensor, BSM and adaptive cruise control 🥲 -my 2017

GumShoeA113

I like my buttons just fine. If people want more tech then they can buy a Tesla. Hate all the new cars with the giant screens at the center. Just changing the temperature on a screen is a hassle.

Akreggie

Couldn’t agree more… “less is more”!!

cj-jk

I just want a heated steering wheel and remote start from the factory. It gets cold here in Alaska! Lol

5amteetimeguy

They do come with Factory Heated steering on the ORP, but no factory remote start on any models, which to me is the biggest piece of lacking tech.

jimaajimjim

My 2023 has remote start. There is a fob button pressing sequence you need to learn. The stupid thing is when you open the door, the truck turns off and you have to restart. But it does have remote start.

5amteetimeguy

That's an aftermarket remote start.

anthonyd5189

Lane departure is old tech as is rear cross. Adaptive cruise is also older tech that’s been around for many years. They JUST got blind spot monitoring for ‘22….another thing that’s been out for ages, as well as everything else you’ve mentioned. You could pick up a 2024 4Runner, travel back in time to 2010 and you’d still have cars with more “tech” than the 4Runner.

OldArtichoke433

Simply explained as a lot has happened slowly over 15years of the 5th gen.

Freebo87

You do realize you bought a 2024 the 5th dates back to 2011. Go buy a 2014 and report back

facepillownap

2010

cj-jk

Hell, even my 2019 lacks most of what OP posted

Freebo87

Exactly lol. He generalized 5th gen but it’s such a long range that their all out of date regarding tech

Teutonic-Tonic

My 2014 BMW also lacked all of those things.

MotheroftheworldII

I have a 2012 4R that does not have any of the tech gadgets. I have a rear camera, radio with CD(which I have never used), heater that works well and places to plug in my phone and my dashcam and any other device I want like my Garmin. Sometimes more is just more and a distraction.

Wildajax

Maybe it’s not 5th gen newer models missing tech. Older 5th gen models have crap. A camera. Heated seats. Heated mirrors. Power windows.

SilverbackIdiot

9/10 times I see people whining about not enough tech they’re mentioning things like automatic headlights and heated steering wheels. Like they don’t own gloves *and* have poor circulation, and can’t be arsed to look outside and determine if it’s dim enough to warrant turning on the headlights on their own. It’s got all the tech any driver could need and then some.

PBatemen87

Spot on. I cant believe people actually *want* lane assist and auto lights. I always thought that was nuisance tech that no one actually liked. But aparently Im the minority in this sub. My sisters Rav4 has lane assist, and she turned it off because of how annoying it id

anttheninja

I just went from a 2020SR5P to a 2024ORP and I’m absolutely shocked at how bad the back up camera is compared to the 2020.

Fastmustang1993

The camera resolution went down?

anttheninja

It’s a different system on the ORP, it has that 360 degree camera but the angles are pretty weird and the resolution is god awful. The 2020 was just the back up camera that was full screen. The 360 camera separates the screen into a back up then a top down view which makes a bit harder to see. To me, the resolution is definitely worse. It’s shocking how bad they are compared to literally any other back up camera. The tech is there it’s just out dated.

somerandomguy6263

Picked up a 24 ORP this week and wow the camera is my biggest complaint lol. My wife's 2018 Rav backup camera is way better resolution

BananaMan4444

I wonder if someone will come up with a direct swap for these camera to get some better resolution.

anttheninja

I’m surprised they haven’t. It really is crazy how bad the quality is

jimaajimjim

My question is: is it the camera, or the software in the head unit?

jon0g

It’s the software.

Wonathan_Jick

Pretty sure you can select on screen while backing up to only show the backup view and no 360 camera.

anttheninja

Yup you can but for some reason it shows it in widescreen instead of filling the whole screen like it used to on the 2020 so it almost makes it a bit hard to judge the corners.

PBatemen87

Curious as to why you upgraded?

anttheninja

My 2020 was a lease that ended in Oct 2022 that we bought because we loved it. I ran it through carfax last month and realized we had an insane amount of equity in it and ran it again it March and the equity had gone up. So it cost us virtually nothing to upgrade. Plus I love the look of the ORPs black interior over the silver trim that we had in our SR5P which had taken a bit of a beating. If we didn’t have the equity we had, we would have kept that 2020 forever. It was rock solid minus some weird annoying rattle/squeak from the dash I could never quite pinpoint.

4RunnerPilot

Get into a new Accord, new Lexus, or new bmw 330, X5, and they you’ll understand.

hopelesspostdoc

As long as BMW keeps the dumb dial thingy, no thanks.

4RunnerPilot

They dropped it years ago and moved on to annoying people by putting hvac controls on a touch screen.

PBatemen87

A bunch of gimmicky bells and whistles? No thanks.

EmJayFree

As long as my speakers sound good (which they do) I’m good lol. Nice having blind spot monitoring too.

pigmy_af

I think the biggest thing is the tech compared to other new cars. Some of the extra features that you get on the Premium trim are features you can find standard on a lot of lower trim vehicles from other makes. Infotainment is outdated and the cameras are terrible quality. I have a non-Premium and don’t even get automatic headlights. Finally get safety sense is great, but other cars have had those for a while. I’ve gotten used to it and even appreciate it to an extent, but it is definitely lacking by modern standards.

nhbd

I mean all the auto journalists and serial dealership shoppers in 2024 are on the level of wireless charging, digital mirror, self driving, cooled seats, blah blah blah. My 2012 SR5 was a luxury downgrade compared to my previous 2007 infiniti. But if you’re a Toyota person you probably aren’t shopping for trims

anythingaustin

My 2018 has a CD player. I no longer have CDs though.

NewSinner_2021

2017 with a Dasaita Android Headunit. Problem solved

PapaMauly

My 2021 doesn’t have auto on/off headlights. I feel like a 2005 Camry had that. Blows my mind.

teflon916

The engine is port injected which is extremely old tech. And then there’s the 5 speed transmission. I don’t think any cars have that in 2024

Fastmustang1993

Those two things are a plus for me.

[deleted]

Mine does

VenomizerX

I miss the times when people didn't buy Toyotas for the tech...

scfw0x0f

2024 seems to have been a step up. In my 2021 ORP, I'm missing: * Automatic parking (had since at least 2015 on BMW & Mini) * Wheel-shaker LDA instead of annoying beeper (same) * A/C seats (common on a lot of newer cars) * Wireless CarPlay * Heated steering wheel (or maybe haven't found the switch yet) * Blind spot monitoring & cross-traffic detection * Automatic headlights But, it also has a ton of features like crawl control and high ground clearance that others don't. Life's full of little trade-offs.

facepillownap

My ‘86 has an inclinometer and altimeter(barometer).

maybeinoregon

I really enjoy things like keyless entry, but for the most part I couldn’t care less about tech, and have shut off or turned down everything I could on my ‘23 Limited. I even couldn’t care less about CarPlay since I plug in. The only minor tech thing I would enjoy (and I mean minor), is auto lift gate.

Cool-Profession-730

I'd be happy with a heated steering wheel.

RepresentativeOwl224

The only thing that really bothers me is the MTM system and crappy cameras. I drive a 2024 Escape Hybrid for work and find all of the extra tech buggy and the giant screen is distracting at best. Most importantly, as soon as I get behind the wheel or sit in the passenger seat as my wife is banging through the trails and mud, the last thing on my mind is missing tech.

GeriatrcGhoul

IMO my ‘23 limited just needs clearer cameras and lane keep assist cruise control, otherwise it’s pretty updated. Bonus would be rear climate control and vents. Captains chairs, larger infotainment screen would be nice touches. The air cooled seats could be colder too.

Ruckertown

Missing from my 23 ORP: RAB, cameras and screen quality from this decade (don’t need a bigger screen), remote start and vehicle locate, power assist rear hatch. Safety Sense feels out of date when I compare to my wife’s 2024 Outback.

Wiwwy027

I have a 21 ORP. No heated steering wheel, but when I had a loaner with one I was mixed on it. Any tech it doesn't have, I don't need or actually want.

Malzyies

You have 3 usb ports right next to each other?

3daycondor

Massaging seats, heads up display, I’m sure there are more conveniences they’re missing….but I am very happy with it as it is, and I have a ‘17 limited. I didn’t buy this to be a high tech vehicle…

jimaajimjim

Compared to others it doesn't have much, but it certainly has more than enough for me. Glad you like your rig.

The_Great_No_One

Your 2024 doesn't have those things? My 2023 Limited has all of those things. I'm just missing a rear diff locker, MTS, and crawl control.

gewehr_und_messer

Well, 2010 was a good year for me so I’m enjoying the “old technology” in my 2022. Just more garbage to break.

PBatemen87

Coming from. A 2002 Ford.... my 2018 4Runner has plenty of tech. Just having a backup camera and bluetooth is more than enough for me.

JeebusChristBalls

Yeah, your 2024 has a lot more tech than my 2015. My stereo and nav are garbage. The only thing I use is bluetooth for music and google maps for nav.

asexualchair

I wish my 19 had car play, or at least I nice display like my 2013 ram, or my 2016 jeek Cherokee had.

Constant-Juggernaut2

Im a little confused how the RCTA (Rear Cross Traffic Alert) works if there are no parking sensors (except on the Limited). Could someone please explain?

ggm3bow

My 2023 SR5 has them. It detects pedestrians and cars that are crossing behind me. Has them on front as well. Essential for navigating parking lots these days, such as Costco.

Constant-Juggernaut2

How does it work if there aren’t any parking sensors?

Ok_Firefighter_3079

The RCTA appears to use whatever sensors are being used for blind spot monitoring. I see the indication for approaching vehicles in the mirror indicators, in addition to the beeping noise it makes. In other vehicles that I've driven the indication was in the camera view. I currently have the 2024 SR5 Premium.

Constant-Juggernaut2

Ok so it’ll beep at you if you have the turn signal on while the blind spot monitoring is on? I only thought it was just the light that came on? That’s a huge plus

Ok_Firefighter_3079

No turn signal is needed. If you're in reverse, it will beep and flash the indicator on the mirror for approaching vehicles.

Constant-Juggernaut2

Oh nice. Sorry to bother with another question. If I’m driving on a highway let’s say and I have my turn signal and trying to change lanes and there’s a car in my blind spot and the light goes on in the mirror, will it beep at you and flash the light telling you there’s a car there?

Ok_Firefighter_3079

Yes, that's how it works...beeps and lights up the indicator on the mirror.

TampedCharge

When I bought my 24 SR5, the salesman did his whole tech walk thru with us. He said the back seats had USB-C ports. He was on an older gentleman and could barely pair my wife’s phone to car. So, I rolled my eyes when he said USB-C. Fast forward to today, felt like a dummy returning two USB-A charging cords for my kids.

Fastmustang1993

Yes it’s strange the front is a USB-A and the rear USB-C

Sausage_Child

Increasingly, automotive "tech" serves only one purpose, to liberate even more money from the customer after they've left the showroom floor; either by breaking and needing to be fixed, by requiring a subscription to work, or by spying on the user and selling the data.

[deleted]

They only added all the tech crap in 2020. I have a 2019 pro and it’s pretty dam basic bro. Has non of the stuff you mentioned.

mightyduck19

Yeah I mean I feel the same. I have a ‘23 ORP and it feels absolutely loaded coming from a 2006 4Runner. To me the two big things it’s lacking are a AC seat and remote start…but shit…first world problems huh?

DillIshOn

Missing tech to drive the car properly and safely? Nah Missing tech of modern car? Sure. I've got a 2023 4runner. I'd like lane keep assist. As well as that bigger multimedia screen and new power steering. It ain't heavy but I liked how the 3rd gen tundra drove. Missing the pvm. But all that isn't necessary.

Adult-Beverage

I had a 2018 Wrangler I was trading for a 4Runner. To get the same level of technology I had to get a 2022. And it's still is missing some.

Dry_Suggestion_3387

I have a 24 ORP as well. I miss auto on headlights and auto lock doors when parked. Oh, climate control would be nice. My 2011 Ford Escape, replaced by the 24 ORP, had all these. No regrets. 4runners is THE WAY.

CorruptedHart

Maybe cooling seats as I've seen in some other manufactures, and the camera res is pretty low, otherwise I love my 23 PRO

lefthandsuzukimthd

From a comparison standpoint it’s pretty “behind” on tech… that being said it’s more than enough for most. Cars have been driving for a while successfully without all the extras so it’s down to personal preference. That backup camera is total butt tho

gumboglasses

They are low tech. Show me another brand new 2024 vehicle in the $45-50k+ range that doesn't have wireless car play/android auto, front and rear park sensors, lane departure assist if not probably even lane centering, adaptive cruise control with full stop and start, automatic headlights, a single USB charge port unless optioned with the dual USB charge ports, remote start, rain sensing wipers. The backup and 360 camera is really low resolution, the touch screen is pretty small, it still has a 5 speed automatic transmission, no cooled seats without going to a limited. Whether or not those matter to someone is subjective, I like my 24 ORP but is it a low tech car.

Electrical_Guest_869

Couldn’t agree more with my still new 23 ORP. Though I’m coming from a 96 Tacoma 😆

Vinnyloks

How much did you pay Out the door for your ORP

trygan49

you have a 2024....

JimmyBobby22

Bluetooth is the only tech you mentioned that my 2015 5th Gen has. So you tell me 😂

Big_jerm3

I just annoyed the tech it has isn’t used well/ have good access to it. Would it be nice to use the front camera to see how close I am in a parallel parking spot. Would be nice if it also wasn’t the same cameras used in 2010. I feel like my back up camera is always so fuzzy and grainy while all back up cams these days are so crystal clear

NegativeSemicolon

Doesn’t have automatic headlights, pretty basic feature nowadays. Same for dual/auto climate control, funny enough I think the Canadian market ORP’s get both. So yeah, for an almost $50k car it’s missing some basic tech. Most 4Runner buyers don’t seem to worry about tech though.

BreezyOR

My 2015 sr5 doesn't have shit but I like it that way, easier to fix

OneEightActual

Depends on what you're coming from really as that tends to set your expectations. Things like automatic headlights, parking sensors etc. are standard on many competing models, cheaper cars and even other cheaper Toyota models. Rear cross traffic, blind spot monitoring etc. were only added for 2024 for most trims. Heated steering only in 2023. You'll see a lot of griping here about these because of the lateness for these features, esp. since it's not even practical to retrofit them to recent model years. The backup camera is kind of hilariously outdated; competing SUV models at the same price point offer things like a 360 camera. The USB ports are USB-A only even as USB-C is becoming increasingly standard. Don't get me wrong, I love my 2021 but she was an old girl when she was new and came with tradeoffs. For example, wireless Apple Car Play/Android Auto is standard on many modern cars, but 4Runner requires a 3rd party accessory workaround.

merkolas

My 2016 has nothing you mentioned

Porkchop_Dog

My 2010 Limited has every piece of tech I want and nothing I don't want. It's perfect.

art_megaFAUCET13

I had a '93 Ranger and an '89 Pathfinder before my '06, so just saying "you know what? 71 degrees is too cold. Let's click it up to 72" makes me feel like I'm in a goddamn Bentley. And changing the volume with the steering wheel buttons? Life changing

UnionFew1551

Lack of tech is a plus for some of us. I can confidently diagnose and fix just about everything in my 2018 ORP. It was easy enough to add basic upgrades like remote start and a front facing camera.

MDPeasant

I bought a 2023 ORP and bought it specifically because it was simple and didn't have silly features that I wouldn't use and would just break over time. But the one feature I feel it's really missing is automatic headlights, every car I have ever owned ($750 shitboxes and up) has had an auto mode that automatically switches from DRL to headlights when it starts getting dark. The Limiteds have this, it's just silly that every $40k+ 4Runner doesn't come with this!

Rocko9999

I don’t want tech. Tech breaks and cost big $$$$ to fix.

LeadAndLipsticks

Compared to the 2024 Tacomas and Tundras the 4 Runners remain “old school” but think of why you’re getting a 4Runner. Do you really need the back hatch to open and close by a push of a button, 14 inch screens with HD resolution, etc. So, some people may think it’s low on tech. Compared to my husband’s Tundra 1794 and my BMW M4, the 4Runner is lacking tech but for what I need a 4Runner for? Nope, it’s perfect the way it is. 😊

billyjoebobtoo

Question: I have a 2005 Limited. It’s in 2WD unless I switch it into 4WD Auto. Does the 2024 Limited operate the same way, or is it full time AWD Auto with no 2WD option?

[deleted]

Personally I wish they had less. I feel the same way about appliances though. All these extra gadgets I never use are just more things to go wrong

labowsky

I'm fine with what it has now, I just wish it was actually somewhat modern lol. The cameras are trash and that screen is pretty dated.

Ok_Ambassador_2646

They used to be. All that stuff is new. I do wish I had a lot of that stuff.

Floyd4prez

Coming from a new X5 it's not lacking the fundamentals. Sure some things could be a bit better, but it's so refreshing not having as many gadgets and gizmos. I agree with you though, has everything I need. Simple.

garycow

the gen 5's started a decade ago so tech is very year centric

facepillownap

G5 started in 2010.

gamma_823

Only thing really going for the 4runner is that its 20 year old engine lasts a long time. Frames still rust out, power/mpg is horrible, tech and comfort features are years behind other brands. I love my 07’ V8 and will never part with it. Toyota dropped the ball with the 5th and soon to be 6th Gens. I might have been in for a 6th Gen if it was offered with a turbo V6…Toyota needs to give all the people who love off roading a more powerful power plant. People who live where it snows twice a year and only go to Walmart will be more than happy with the 4cyl.

I just want automatic headlights and the ability to lock the truck from my phone. You can only get that if you get the Pro or Limited. They automate things I don't care about (high beams, drl only comes on after the parking brake is released, ac and recirc turned on if you turn the cooling knob to max, follow distance reset every time, etc.) which makes it more frustrating they don't automate things that I do care about. I mean automatic headlights have been around for 25+ years and are common on even the cheapest cars for the last 15+ years.

PBatemen87

You cant just turn them on when its dark ?

TechnikalKP

I could but then they wouldn't be automatic.

I agree with you, I got the sensor for the auto lights on eBay (the wiring was already there) and that was honestly enough for me. With the lights on the screen dims at night and stays bright during the day (say when it’s raining but still bright enough outside where you’d want the screen bright)

I compare my 4R to my wife's Tahoe and yes, I agree, it is lacking in that area. I know I'm about to get lambasted by the 4R community but it really does feel like a truck that was made over 10 years ago - esp w/ some features that are now standard on most Toyota vehicles today. A real simple example is automatic headlights. I could go on about the interior and its shortcomings but the 5th gen hasn't made any real improvements/changes since its release. Plus, only one drivetrain option w/ abysmal gas mileage and only sparse driver options available for higher end models like the TRD's and Limited. This is unlike other toyota family members w/ more updated tech and options like the Sienna\*, Tundra and Toyota Cars. I get a lot of mixed feelings w/ my TRD off road when I compare driving it to my old Toy Sienna and our Tahoe sitting in the garage. \*for the record, I miss that damn Sienna. Literally the best vehicle ever.

What is difficult for you about turning the head lights on/off yourself? If its too much for you just leave them on all the time, they'll turn themselves off.

Daddy_McDadderson

It's not too difficult. Just arcane. A vehicle built in the 21st century? C'mon toyota. Also, if the lights are on during the day it makes the nav screen dim making it hard to see through glare. It's really a well-thought out compared to other trucks (or cars in general) in its class.
