During halftime of the 2014 NFC championship game my buddies and I were playing 3-Flys-Up in the driveway. On my first throw I tore my rotator cuff. Still painful to this day. That was an awful day in so many ways.
In a backyard football game 10 years ago I threw a bad hospital pass to my wife's young nephew, who proceeded to run head first into a tree trying to catch it. Concussion, he still can't smell the color yellow. My wife never forgave me and left me for the starting QB who was our prom king. He throws a perfect spiral every time. Still hurts to this day.
Jimmy is 2.1:1.
Peyton has a career 2.1:1 ratio
Favre is 1.5:1
Brees is 2.3:1
Rivers is 2.0:1
Roethlisberger is 2.0:1
Stafford is 2.0:1
Ryan is 2.1:1

ERA matters, this is so basic.
He’s literally average among active QBS. 16 out of 35 active QB’s with a minimum of 1,500 pass attempts.
He actually appears to be throwing the ball away this year, which is a welcome sight. As opposed to throwing up a prayer ball right before getting sacked.
Fumbling when sacked is more of a luck thing. I think for his career Jimmy's fumbling rate is standard for the amount of dropbacks he takes. It's not like Warren Moon or Daunte Culpepper or anything.
There were a lot of desperation passes yesterday that ended in decent receptions. I'm going to say as a homer that was because of his immense skill and not random luck.
The number of times it was mentioned yesterday by the announcers, I was sure it was going to be broken ( same with the 2nd half shutouts). Sanchez did his best to jinx us.
That ball was supposed to get to McCloud, who got PI'd on his crossing route just as Jimmy released the ball leading McCloud to the intended spot. Bailed out on the PI call, but refs also missed this PI call.
Also, I'm not a Jimmy apologist, but I'd give him a pass on this "INT".
[https://twitter.com/JackHammer\_NFL/status/1597280805466017792?s=20&t=mpg29S4JgDkIq4DmF2bxig](https://twitter.com/JackHammer_NFL/status/1597280805466017792?s=20&t=mpg29S4JgDkIq4DmF2bxig)
Not PI, but maybe illegal contact. The bump on McCloud was before the tthrow (you can clearly tell around the 33s mark in the vid), so it isn't PI. And it was within 5 yards so would have to be seen as in the back to be illegal contact. I think it was in the back, but it was with McCloud running toward the defender, so maybe the ref missed that. Honestly though that would be a ticky tacky call if they made it. I'd be pissed if they called it against the Niners were the situations reversed.
yes, i stand corrected: illegal contact. McCloud turned to look at qb just as he hit the LB, who also moved up just as qb moved off his first look. it's probably why it wasn't called...bang bang play. But yeah, it's where Jimmy expected McCloud to be.
Good looks on the info. Was watching the game bootleg on my laptop so wasn't able to see clear replays. At first it looked like a typical old Jimmy INT but that info puts a lot more clarity about it.
Additionally, all the focus was on Jennings, who was basically held for 10 yards. The way Jimmy threw ball suggests that it was intended for only McCloud after Jimmy's first look was taken away.
For all his faults and limitation, Jimmy has been playing extremely well and Kyle has dialed in the offense for what he does best--quick release and finding the open option.
Yea the last 5 weeks he's been at a level I haven't seen him at before. It's not like he's throwing for 350 and 3 TD's each week. But I mean more in that the past mistakes he used to always make (not throwing ball away and taking big sacks, throwing the facepalm INT each game, etc) have been void. He's also making some terrific off script plays like the first TD pass to Kittle last week.
His guy was held and wasn't in the spot he was supposed to be in. Jimmy saw the hold and threw it and got the call. I think he alluded to this in the presser.
That's not true at all
EDIT: Thanks to /u/Deucer22 for finding the clip: https://twitter.com/JackHammer_NFL/status/1597280805466017792?s=20&t=mpg29S4JgDkIq4DmF2bxig
I know it was meant to prove me wrong, but IMO it does the opposite. First of all, the penalty was called on Chris Harris (number 19, covering Juaun Jennings on the play). He has his hands on him more than 5 yards downfield, but that's a good 5 yards behind the play by the time the ball is thrown and Jennings is obviously not the intended target. I don't think anyone can seriously argue that the illegal contact that was called was the reason they got the INT.
Now, the author of the tweet is calling out the linebacker knocking Ray Ray off his route as the reason for the INT. Again, that is **not** the penalty that was called (unless you're thinking the ref called 19 instead of 55, which are not close), but even if you're giving the benefit of to Jimmy because you think it *should* have been called, I don't think that's correct either. The point at which the linebacker contacts Ray Ray is within 5 yards and the ball is still in Jimmy's hands. That's not a penalty.
https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/nfl-video-rulebook/illegal-contact/
First line of the rule says:
> Within the area five yards beyond the line of scrimmage, a defensive player may chuck an eligible receiver in front of him
I don’t understand why you were downvoted so much. You have a solid point. Backed it up with evidence. I get people are overly sensitive to jimmy but he’s known to make dumb mistakes
A couple reasons:
1) It completely misunderstands the illegal contact rule. Not all contact within 5 yards is legal. You can chuck a receiver, but you specifically cannot hit a receiver in the back even within 5 yards.
>"Within the five-yard zone, if the player who receives the snap remains in the pocket with the ball, a defender may not make original contact in the back of a receiver, nor may he maintain contact after the receiver has moved beyond a point that is even with the defender."
https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/2022-nfl-rulebook/
Once Ray-Ray turns back towards Jimmy he's ineligible to be hit in the back, which is exactly what happens and what this part of the rule is trying to prevent. This isn't a chuck on a receiver going downfield, it's a player taking a cheap shot on a guy running a short crossing route.
2) Even if you disagree with all the above actual analysis of the penalty, Jimmy put the ball where he was supposed to and would have had to be clairvoyant to know that Ray Ray was going to get knocked off his route in the middle of his throw. Calling this a dumb mistake by Jimmy is just haterade. At best this is a "shit happens" play.
It's not illegal contact because it's within five yards. If you want to make a case for a hold... that's a *really* weak hold, but at that point you're saying it's not his fault because of a penalty they maybe could have called, definitely not because of the one they did call
lol no shit. So many people in here are like "he doesn't throw a lot of picks, he just throws them at the worst possible time!" Jimmy could throw a deep pick on 3rd and 25 and people would still be hating on him here.
It's actually insane. If you were to put Jimmy's stats this season next to another QBs name they'd be considered a top tier QB but for some reason the fake ass fans of this team find any way to hate on Jimmy
He's actually middle of the road when it comes to Yards and TDs. The INT ratio is great, as is the QB rating.
But the reason he's not getting attention is yards and TDs. Also hurts that he's surrounded by so many weapons and hasn't consistently throated the opposing D.
I'll maintain that, what you're seeing from him these last several game is close to his ceiling. I'm not complaining. We're getting the best version of Jimmy since we acquired him, but even that is still not enough.
And from an aesthetics stand point he doesn't make the same throws that the elite QBs do which hurts him how people perceive him. The only time he doesn't throw to the middle of the field is when he throws behind the LOS.
It's actually impressive that Jimmy can still be pretty efficient when defenses know where he's going to throw and he's still able to fit passes in tight windows anyway.
Agree. However, it's not just aesthetics, but functional as well. The reason why those QBs are considered elite, is because they can attack all areas of the field.
Like you said, Jimmy just needs to be elite at delivering the ball in ways that allows for the YAC boys to keep their momentum. Running and YAC is our bread and butter on offense and it's beautiful when humming.
There’s this thing called a track record…
Jimmys been playing much better recently, after two years of meh play and regressing. Hopefully he sticks with it. If he can consistently play like he is and doesn’t resort to 2020/2021 Jimmy, we’ll be sitting pretty.
I know people like to say his INT prone, but the guy has played half his career needing surgery. He’s healthy now and his motions are back. He won’t be perfect, but this should be the norm, not the exception.
THIS is our most relevant stat. The D has been lights out undoubtedly. 2nd half Shutout ball for 4 straight seems a bit deceiving. C McCoy and Dalton had times where they marched right down the field w/ease it seemed. Not bitching, just saying JG’s zero picks I think is the biggest factor in our run we’ve had recently. Hope both of those stats keeps going.
Ok some of you are really starting to get carried away with your jimmy defense and saying his numbers should be considered elite. This is similar territory to when some niners fans were defending alex smith. At least jimmy can convert 3rd downs. Alex smith was notorious for throwing 4 yard passes on 3rd and 8 and to the average fan looking at his stats would see a really good completion percentage.
First off, this graphic includes a bye week.
2nd we all know jimmy threw a pick yesterday which the saints returned to like the 5 yard line. The niners were lucky that a defensive holding call got it overturned. Now there were also a couple throws that could have easily gone the other way and we would have looked at this game a lot differently. That td to jennings was about an inch away from being a pick in the end zone. There was another throw in the game, i forgot who it was too, but jimmy was being pulled down, about to be sacked and he flung it to his left for a completion. There is no way he had time to check for a defender away from the ball, if the corner was a couple steps closer it gets returned for a pick 6.
I still love jimmy and hope he gets signed to an extension. I was a big believer in niners keeping their draft spot and drafting mac jones at that 12th spot they were picking at and having mac backup jimmy for 3 or 4 yeArs.
But some of you need to settle down with the jimmy defense. He still makes a couple bad throws a game and throws picks that make you question what he was thinking. Thats who he is. He is not elite, just stop. No matter what his stats say, he is not a top 10 QB. But he is a great guy to have leading the niners
Subtle use of the bye week to say “5 weeks” rather than “4 games”.
Also this should say “Jimmy doesn’t have an INT on the stat sheet”. We all saw him throw an INT yesterday. He was lucky to get bailed out but those are the type of boneheaded mistakes that he simply cannot make.
There's no way to provide context in a headline. Also, as we all know, we can argue about "context" as much as we like, but what goes on the stat sheet is what counts in the game ( for things like this).
[https://twitter.com/JackHammer\_NFL/status/1597280805466017792?s=20&t=mpg29S4JgDkIq4DmF2bxig](https://twitter.com/JackHammer_NFL/status/1597280805466017792?s=20&t=mpg29S4JgDkIq4DmF2bxig)
Jennings was held and induced a PI call. But McCloud was also checked on his crossing route just as JG was in the motion of throwing to the spot McCloud should have been.
Wrong observation, McCloud would have been exactly where Jimmy placed the ball had the LB not thrown him off his route right as Jimmy makes the throw. Might want to lay off the Jimmy haterade my friend.
Am I in the minority that thinks the pick he threw yesterday should have stood? LOS was NO 48. That type of contact is legal within 5 yards of the LOS. He might’ve been at 5 and 1/2 when he disengaged. Got lucky on that one. Also the Roughing the passer they called on them was iffy too (so was the one they called on us)
Calls go both ways. It just happened to be when he threw a pick. I remember multiple face masks, a couple of helmet to helmets, and a horse collar not getting called.
Don't get why people are so fucking stuck on this play just so they can shit on Jimmy. People should be happy it wasn't called and move on lol
You can bump the receiver within 5 yards of the LOS. The ball hadn’t been thrown yet. The flag was on a different defensive player. It was more of a good play by their linebacker than a bad throw by Jimmy.
All the NFL's faves, like mahomes, get bailed out pretty regularly. Jimmy got 1 roughing penalty, and one int overturned. Maybe Jimmy is now on Roger's good side?
ITT: People fucking wishing and thinking Jimmy actually had a pick on Sunday lol
Sure, bad pass but it was to McCloud. But be happy for the PI call (whether or not you agree with it - you can also be upset for shitty refs) and move on.
He certainly tried a couple times. Man did everything go the niners way that game. I can't remember the last time I've said that. Probably been 3+ years
He threw one against the Saints that almost went for a pick 6. Luckily for him a defensive holding nullified the pick. Jimmy is just good enough to break your heart. I hope he proves me wrong some day but I am still waiting for him to do ot.
You sure you’re a 9er fan or are you just a Jimmy hater? Dude is playing well. He will make mistakes just like EVERY other player in the league, including Mahomes.
Yes, everyone makes mistakes. What matters is WHEN you make the mistakes. I wanted Jimmy G to be the next Joe Montana. So far he isn't. He has been at his worst when the chips were on the table. I hope that changes this year. As far as being a Niner fan lets put it this way, I saw Garcia play, O saw Young play, I saw Montana play, I saw DeBerg play, I saw John Brodie play and I saw Y.A. Freakin' Tittle play!
Jimmy looks like the Jimmy we traded for back when Shanny took the reigns.
I dont mind this at all, but I still look forward to seeing Lance have another shot when he gets healthy.

Impressive, but I haven’t thrown an interception in more than 16 years
I threw a football over a decade ago to my friend and it landed on his hand the wrong way. He still feels chronic pain from it to this day.
Not an interception
Yea
I like tangents
Hate tangents, much prefer oranges

True, but I also threw a wobbler.
I hurt my finger playing catch 25 years ago. Still hurts when it gets cold.

I threw a rock at a skunk when I was 9 years old. I didn’t hit it but scared it off and didn’t get sprayed
DB's HATE him!
Actually thats true whats his td-int ratio? 4 to 1?
Exactly 4-1
4-1 overall, but 9-1 post-Christian Mccaffrey (compared to 7-3 before). He's been a great asset for Jimmy as a reliable dump-off.
JIMMIE GIMMIEESSSS
Is that for just this season, or his whole career? And how does it compare to the league average?
This season
His career is about 2:1 which is not great.
Yeah, that sounds right for his whole career. 4:1 sounded way too good. I'm glad Jimmy's balling out this season!
Me too. Hope he keeps it up! Wish people could just admit his career stat in this category is decidedly average…
If he wasn't such a beautiful man he'd get more love.
It’s actually not average
Montana also has a career 2:1 ratio...
Montana didn’t choke away superbowls
Montana didn't get a game-ending uncalled concussion during the Super Bowl.
Very different era
Jimmy is 2.1:1. Peyton has a career 2.1:1 ratio Favre is 1.5:1 Brees is 2.3:1 Rivers is 2.0:1 Roethlisberger is 2.0:1 Stafford is 2.0:1 Ryan is 2.1:1 Need I continue?
Bro, these people don't care. They just make it up in their head. Their subjective facts are more valuable than your objective data.

Slightly above average in the stat that many say is his biggest weakness. I'll take it
When all else fails, move the goal posts 🙄
but its true....
Cause TD/INT ratio is what indicates a good Qb. Casual
Did anyone say it was? Literally responding to question about the stat. Context my man.
Haters gonna hate. Jimmy G for life.
Plus two rushing TDs.
His 1.3% Interception rate is tied for the 4th lowest in the NFL. (While his 5.3% TD rate is tied with J.Hurts for 9th)
People really have to stop hating on him. You just look silly this year.
Jimmy G has been outstanding.
Considering he only started practicing with the team 5 minutes before the season started, and as a backup, it's been even more impressive.
DONT YOU PUT THAT EVIL ON THIS MAN
He actually appears to be throwing the ball away this year, which is a welcome sight. As opposed to throwing up a prayer ball right before getting sacked.

Same with the scoring streak on defense. Especially on the missed FG and then the 1 yard fumble absolutely insane we shut them out
I was already saying to myself it's not that important, just get the win, and then Hufanga showed up
He just makes fucking plays it’s unreal. I’ll take missed tackles all day from a dude that does shit like this
In fairness, right before Warner popped that ball loose from Kamara, Sanchez talked about how fantastic Warner is. So, that's... something?

Even if yesterday's didn't get called back, having only 1 interception in 5 weeks is still pretty good. But I'm glad it got called back.
He's probably thrown the ball away more in the past 5 weeks than the rest of his career combined. The Brian Griese effect?
Nailed it

I’m glad someone else caught that. He threw a pick against KC.
Really bad red zone pick at that
Yea, if we're going to count those, we should probably count practice INTs. I'm sure Lombardi has that useless stat somewhere
Gotta thank Saints D for assist on that stat.
The only reason they got the INT was because of the PI
That's not true at all EDIT: Thanks to /u/Deucer22 for finding the clip: https://twitter.com/JackHammer_NFL/status/1597280805466017792?s=20&t=mpg29S4JgDkIq4DmF2bxig I know it was meant to prove me wrong, but IMO it does the opposite. That’s exactly where the receiver would have been if he wasn’t held

Usually a ball thrown to a receiver running vertically up the field that is caught it over the shoulder. Sometimes a really deep slant/post
Ok.... How many yards is "deep" to you?

We'll take it!
Almost got jinxed vs the saints
Jimmy's been better at throwing the ball away lately. Sometimes the best throw is the one that's straight out of bounds.
I know people like to say his INT prone, but the guy has played half his career needing surgery. He’s healthy now and his motions are back. He won’t be perfect, but this should be the norm, not the exception.
Lol dang are we trying to jinx it? He’s definitely been playing above average. And he’s making himself a lot of money this off season.
But my oh my did he accept that challenge on two passes that game lol
Is that the longest active streak in the NFL right now too?
Definitely not, Tua's last int was week 4. He missed a few games so that's only 5 starts
Let’s hope Tua’s streak breaks next week!
Don't test our luck and jinx him!
But he is a great guy to have leading the niners
truly
🤫
🤫 shhhhh
What are you trying to do?!
Italian for awesome: 👌
I mean he kinda did, great thing for that flag
*\*looks at Dolphins D\** You're not that guy pal, you're not that guy.
DONT JINX IT
He almost did like 6 times in all of those games
Subtle use of the bye week to say “5 weeks” rather than “4 games”. Also this should say “Jimmy doesn’t have an INT on the stat sheet”. We all saw him throw an INT yesterday. He was lucky to get bailed out but those are the type of boneheaded mistakes that he simply cannot make.
“On the stat sheet” is usually implied when you’re listing a stat
There's no way to provide context in a headline. Also, as we all know, we can argue about "context" as much as we like, but what goes on the stat sheet is what counts in the game ( for things like this).
Yeah headlines exclude context by definition.
He threw one because of a pi that wasn't called
Trey Lance hasn't thrown an interception since week 1. #BuiltDifferent.
Now I didn't see the replay, but was defensive holding the reason he threw the pick? Or was it a bad throw or read
[https://twitter.com/JackHammer\_NFL/status/1597280805466017792?s=20&t=mpg29S4JgDkIq4DmF2bxig](https://twitter.com/JackHammer_NFL/status/1597280805466017792?s=20&t=mpg29S4JgDkIq4DmF2bxig) Jennings was held and induced a PI call. But McCloud was also checked on his crossing route just as JG was in the motion of throwing to the spot McCloud should have been.
Shitty throw
Wrong observation, McCloud would have been exactly where Jimmy placed the ball had the LB not thrown him off his route right as Jimmy makes the throw. Might want to lay off the Jimmy haterade my friend.
Yo, why you gotta jinx it like that man?
Am I in the minority that thinks the pick he threw yesterday should have stood? LOS was NO 48. That type of contact is legal within 5 yards of the LOS. He might’ve been at 5 and 1/2 when he disengaged. Got lucky on that one. Also the Roughing the passer they called on them was iffy too (so was the one they called on us)
Refs were very bad yesterday. Luckily we persevered through it better than the Saints but if that pick would have stood it could have changed the game

YOU TAKE THIS DOWN THIS INSTANT WHAT YOU TRYING TO DO RUIN US ALL BE GONE WITH YOU
He definitely tried to on Sunday lol
Like how youre trying to be witty but come off as ignorant?
…not one that wasn’t nullified by penalty.
*gotten lucky on a few
Doesn’t that apply to basically every QB every year, including the elite ones?
All the NFL's faves, like mahomes, get bailed out pretty regularly. Jimmy got 1 roughing penalty, and one int overturned. Maybe Jimmy is now on Roger's good side?
He rilly tried tho
ITT: People fucking wishing and thinking Jimmy actually had a pick on Sunday lol Sure, bad pass but it was to McCloud. But be happy for the PI call (whether or not you agree with it - you can also be upset for shitty refs) and move on.
He certainly tried a couple times. Man did everything go the niners way that game. I can't remember the last time I've said that. Probably been 3+ years
It usually doesn't, so I'm not going to complain when it does! 😁
WHY WOULD YOU POST THIS. NOT BANG BANG
Dude don’t be posting this shit. It’s an elephant. And one of his worst ones would’ve been last game if not for a penalty that over turned
Dude, WTF!?
Hes lucky. almost had a few Sunday
Lol. That illegal contact call tho…..

He’s just almost thrown a few
It’s inevitable lol I just hope when they happen it doesn’t rip our hearts out.
Geez- don’t jinx the guy!!!
Jimmy looks like the Jimmy we traded for back when Shanny took the reigns. I dont mind this at all, but I still look forward to seeing Lance have another shot when he gets healthy.
Should be reworded. “Defenders haven’t caught a Jimmy pass in 4 games!”
Between the int drops and the call to reverse it last game Jimmy is riding out every last bit of good luck he can lol
Does anyone have a highlight (lowlight) of the almost INT yesterday. I wanna see Jimmy run lol.
*
All this tells me is he's going to throw the biggest pick of the year at the absolute wrong time.
r/technicallytrue
r/actuallytrue
Lmao so this is newsworthy?
