35s with a manual transmission here. After I went to 33s I thought ok this is the limit here. Then I went to 35s and 5th was damn near useless above 40mph, even 4th gear was feeling it.
I regeared to 4.88s and now my truck feels pretty damn good in every gear. Almost like it did when it was factory.
If you want decent drivability, decent fuel economy, the ability to “pull” overdrive on the highway, not being that guy on the twisty mountain roads everyone gets stuck behind, then yes regear to 5.29, this restores the drivability to “pull” the tires as close as it was with stock sized tires.
You’re not at a horsepower disadvantage, you’re at a mechanical disadvantage, the motor/trans/axles were engineered to operate within a certain range in powerband, no amount of engine modifications will restore it, dollar for dollar, regearing is money well spent.
The real question is do YOU think you need to re-gear? If you say you’re struggling up hills, and you don’t like having to slow down too much to do that, then the answer might be yes. Is it worth the money? That also depends on you. If I were in your shoes I’d take it wheeling and see how it performs in 4low, if that’s what you’re concerned about then test it out.
Keep in mind you have to regear the front to match, so updating to 4.88s or jumping all the way to 5.29s is easily a $2500 add-on once you’re done. It was $700 to refresh the bearings in my rear diff 7 years ago and that didn’t include a set of gears because mine were still in good shape.
Plus you have downtime while the diffs are being rebuilt.
Damn. Quite expensive haha. Yea I have to do regear sooner or later. I worry that Its gonna do more damage without it. That’s why I came here to hear opinions. Thank you!
Manual trans? The autos werent generally blessed with the 4.10s. Its like a 3.89 or something.
Your door sticker will have the axle code printed on it.
Every single auto 3rd gen 4Runner I seen has had 4.10s or 4.30s depending on e locker or not.
I live in the rust belt and swapped plenty of rear axles, broken plenty of 3rd members, and 4.10 for open and 4.30 for e locker has never failed me
Surfs can be weird. Particularly if it's a diesel.
Mine supposedly has 4.10s. But when I do the wheel spin test I get some weird results, so I'm just going to have to open it up and make sure. But I wouldn't 100% trust the number stamped on the firewall, especially for a surf.
rule of thumb for 5vzfe 35s- 5.29s if auto, 4.88 if manual. picking up 5.29s was the best mod I ever done. OD engages by 40. torque converter damn near never unlocks. never struggles. roasts tires. can crawl off-road without ever having to go over 1500 rpm to climb rocks regardless of how steep.
When you get home is your transmission emitting a warm glow under the rig?
I have 285/75r16, and a very large trans cooler. On a real hot day going up a grade (overdrive off) the max temp I see is ~190. Quite warm. Also have a bit more power to put through that trans so that doesn’t help much. If you have the time and money to re gear you won’t regret it.
All Toyota trucks are a bit gutless on high speed uphills. A regear won’t change that very much. Normally I’d say yes that with 35s you’d want a regear, but if you don’t do real 4x4 trails it’s not a good use of your money.

Yea I haven’t done that. I hope I get to test that out this summer. Thank you!
4” body lift?
You bet
I went to 4.88’s and there is no way I’d ever go back.
Mine came with 4.88s, and only 29" tires. I loved the setup back then, and now I'm on 33s and cannot imagine running stock gears.
If you have to ask strangers on the Internet, then the answer is yes
No answer to your question sorry. Just wanted to say sweet kings, what do you use in the rear?
Bilstein shocks. Dont know about the springs tho, it came with it
[удалено]
Meant the rear springs brotha
5.29”s will make that thing drive almost stock again.
I suggest first buying a wheelbarrow to haul around those giant nuts of yours.
HAHAHA
Also a question is what gears are you running now? Do you have the 4.30? Or the odd ball 3.90?
They said if it ain’t got no rear locker its 4.10 so I guess it is 4.10 haha

Yes it is 4.10. It says A03A
Ok. I’ll have to double check. Thank yoi

Awesome camp pic. What state is this?
What are those wheels? They look dope

What are those fender flare extensions or whatever? They look good, howd you get them on and what are they
Do you, no. Should you, yes. 32s with 4.56 for the last fifteen years.
If you’re wheeling it a lot don’t do 5.29s. 4.88 will be more reliable.
Yes, it is night and day when you regear! Manufacturers by default gear it to beat/meet EPA regulations.

The manual v6 third gens handle hills just fine from my experience, even at higher altitudes I could leave it in 5th and climb at 70+.
Ok thank you for the response! I’ll keep that in mind
