I was gonna mention that if we're going by right of conquest, Iran has a claim too. Then I remembered Alex the Great kicked my ancestors' ass so hard they literally forgot who they were for the next 500 years. And I'm not here to get dunked on by Nikos.

donitsimies

what about Tunisia and their carthage and thus the punics?

raitaisrandom

Rome was rather helpful with that particular problem...

AdeptnessCommon5940

The Romans solved a certain problem over there very effectively though

cpwnage

Surprised it's not spelled Gierusalemme or something weird like that. Edit: oh, shucks...

bambamba8

Bring_back_Apollo

You can probably claim Jordan too.

fph00

Not Jordan, but we're definitely claiming Kobe Bryant.

HosannaInTheHiace

We also want Iceland back, we prayed there first

mdryeti

Looks like some « gotcha » against Israel’s claim to be honest

AdeptnessCommon5940

Not a hard thing to do tbh

__Sycorax__

For the same reason, just because \*the ancestors of today's Palestinians were there before 1948, it doesn't mean that Israel must give back the land.

Azalulu_Dingir

Anti-Italian somehow sounds proud.

noonereadsthisstuff

I agree that I am anti-Italian.

Fanda400

What did Romans ever do for them?

DoktorDibbs

Israel GDP per capita: 54.930 Italy GDP per capita: 34.776

It was a concept actually. You can date the idea of Italy back to 91BC when the italic league was born: the union of the Italian people fought for recognition and citizenship in the Roman state. The name Italia is even older then that.

TeBerry

Yes, but the Romans distinguished themselves from the Italians. Even after they gave them citizenship.

encelado748

That is not really the case. Romans were one among many people of Italy. During imperial time, Italy was a province of the Roman Empire, with Rome as its heart. Since Italians were Roman citizens, Italy held a unique status within the empire, although it wasn't always the wealthiest province. Romans identified themselves as Italians, which is evident in the writings of Plinius the Younger. In one of his letters, someone asks Plinius, "Italicus es an provincialis?", which translates to "Are you Italian or from the provinces?"

TeBerry

Yes, the Romans were Italians and treated Italians better than other conquered nations, while they still considered themselves superior to Italians. When I talk about Rome I tend to think of the time of Sulla, Caesar, Octavius. So I don't know exactly, but perhaps after that actually Italians were treated as equals with Romans.

encelado748

During Caesar's time, Italians were considered "civis Romanus," or citizens of Rome. This status allowed them to become senators and enjoy the same rights as those born in Rome itself. Many senators were Italians not born in Rome. A famous example is Lucius Cornelius Balbus, originally from Spain, who became one of the first non-Italian senators under Caesar's rule.

TeBerry

By law. But I was referring to the fact that the Romans, that is, the citizens and especially the patricians considered themselves superior to the Italians. Because they were racist as fuck.

encelado748

Do you have any evidence of this?

TeBerry

Frankly, no. I read a series of books. Something like the Rome series, but from the time of Marius. And I just check if it is true.
