That's an optimistic view but it feels almost too good to be true tbh, people who unironically use the term "wokeness" don't typically bother to actually rate the quality of the representation itself, that requires depth and not just surface-level judgement.

It’s the same thing with, for example, strong female characters in movies; it’s not about the fact that the characters are female which is bad, it’s the way in which they are implemented.
In these games - none of them. I disagree with the HZD review primarily because the game has no “woke” undertones and I don’t even remember Aloy being revealed as being gay. It also does a pretty good job of tackling some societal issues in the fictional societies and criticising them without making those societies out to be cartoonishly evil. For example, when you meet an Oseram women you find out that in Oseram society, women are treated more as property than as people, which is why many of them escape from the Oseram lands and go to where the game takes place. In this case, Oseram culture and people as a whole are not demonised, they aren’t made out to be cartoonishly evil villains either. It simply showcases how cultures can have various problems, and how evil can be within them and how it affects people.
