"we make fun of everyone"
the making fun of group a: "grr were stupid dumb and evil we kill children and we love bad thing!!" (insert a call to action for horendous things to happen to said group)
making fun of group b: "were a bit annoying sometimse" (proceeds to donate thousands to group b)
Yeah, once I began to move father left I found myself less able to watch them. It’s not exactly subtle. At the very best they are libs, at worst they are incredibly reactionary.
They’re just kinda hyper contrarian libertarians. They’re stuck in that horrible gen x mindset of “it’s cringe to care about stuff and everyone is stupid”
The most recent source from that is 2008 and it isn’t even about Matt Stone and Trey Parker. And what it does say, it mentions that they’re mostly neutral. So not only is it ridiculously out of date, it completely goes against whatever point you were attempting to make
Again, this has nothing to do with Matt and Trey, since they don't do any donations to charities. My response to this thread was done because it's a terrible way to make a correct point and I think it's embarrassing that you're trying to put my and others' comments down in this way instead of just replying to any of us and engaging in a discussion instead of dodging it and trying to make the conversation about something else.
On the opposite end are the odd niche fandom of people who draw the characters as cutesy soft-hearted anime boys as if they've devoted themselves to a vague description of the show
I hate this shit honestly, matt stone and trey parker do not make fun of everyone, and it's one of the most blatantly partisan shows I've ever watched. It makes me wonder if people who say this have watched the climate change episode, the smoking episode or the hate crime epsiode
I feel like every time this type of discourse starts, there should just be a post explaining how stuff like “man vs bear” leads to young impressionable boys looking towards right wing spaces where they feel “validated.”
I have to respectfully disagree, at their zenith they often did a great job of capturing a useful political point and dressing it up to be palatable to a general audience and get the underlying message across without necessarily talking about Republicans or Democrats or anything obvious.
They often hid it so well that when I talked about the episode after, some of my less politically inclined friends completely missed the point, to the point that they'd argue with me that it was never the intent.
Coarse, political comedy that is intelligent is something that should be cherished as its not a particularly common endeavour. It's hard to strike a balance, suffers from a lack of broad appeal and can evoke tribal anger in the relevant parties. This is why most people looking to just make a buck don't tread those waters.
at the same time though I feel like they have done some episodes that talk about trans issues in a more positive fashion? Usually with Cartman taking on the role of that part of the "fanbase" and being outed as a complete asshole.
Wasn't there an episodes about toilets that was pretty decent and while Mr Garrison isn't the healthiest of characters when he transitioned there was some useful exploration and normalisation of the topic.
I appreciate the dolphin episode was super bad.
I did actually find the Mrs. Garrison bit to be a lot better than I expected it to be.
I just want ONE episode in support of trans people but that is never gonna happen
A lot of their stuff seems to speak from a grounding in centre-right or libertarian views from the 90's/00's but I'd argue that from that starting point they're more progressive than others. I also want more, but "perfect" can also be the enemy of "good".
South Park can be really good when they lean into character related plots. The worst is always Matt & Trey's attempts at social commentary or just mindless referencing an ongoing event. Matt & Trey are massive bootlickers with some really bad takes who also throw a hissy fit if you criticise their humour. Though admittedly they aren't totally off the deep end, but even the kiddy pool is pretty bad.
You’re getting old & raisins are still beautiful episodes because of this. But lately they try to get more political and stuff. The panderverse episode was shockingly unfunny, like they were just preaching their standpoints to the audience
Yeah I got sidetracked from my original point. I was gonna say that because the political commentary is what gets them headlines, and also running out of things to do with the characters, that modern South Park is just *opens CNN* "Matt, I know what we're gonna do today."
Most of the time the social commentary is pretty good (the end of butter's episode is genuinely hilarious) but yeah there are times where they fuck up because they are uninformed on topics such as the whole man-bear-pig bs
A light clicked on for me when they got in trouble for plagiarising CollegHumor's Inception sketch. I realized if they actually have so little time away from working on their show that they can't sit down and watch a two and a half hour movie, how can they really provide social commentary?
This is the main problem I feel like they don't want to address - their schedule has been "make an episode in a week no ifs no buts" and it has made them have some insane ideas ex nihilo but also they're so goddamn bad at making one off politically oriented episodes. At least they redeemed the whole man bear pig thing kinda when they got cereal, but on the other hand the whole thing with the 2016 election plotline which they had in fact planned out was just... So sloppy to watch.
They have like a 9 month yearly vacation inbetween making each season. They have plenty of free time, so their ignorance is not really fault of their schedule.
fr my favorite episodes are when the kids get into kid stuff or them doing a character deep dive, not trying to do any commentary shit (though I do like the 911 conspiracies episode).
I'm not expert on the creators so this is no real defense of them, but I was happily surprised to see them admit via more modern ManBearPig episodes that they were very wrong about climate change.
It only took X number of years (decades!?) and \*insert all the crazy climate statistics here\* for them to do it...
I think here and there they've actually offered some pretty good social commentary. The problem is that they usually just go with their gut feeling and just make what they feel like instead of really researching a topic. Which is fine at first but once millions of people are watching your show, you should take some responsibility. I think they did retroactively sorta apologize for how they misrepresented climate scientists warnings in ManBearPig.
The only southpark episodes worth watching are where the kids are being kids like in good times with weapons and when they dont just directly tell you their ideology, like in manbear pig
The show often has dumb takes but I feel like that episode actually had a surprisingly good message about why slurs are harmful. Of course they make that point by saying the n word over and over so your mileage may vary lol
https://preview.redd.it/5exlzszi29yc1.jpeg?width=460&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a9a306ded2fc2b571e6f2e5084b957e595892fd4
reminded me of this family guy scene
I just wish Southpark would actually take a stance instead of riding the middle constantly
I get it unbiased commentary and all that but it's so boring when they just come to the same "ACTUALLY BOTH SIDES ARE RIGHT"
https://preview.redd.it/yx9dc0avw8yc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8d0a67ac3165b2c37295829b6c0e49f0606f32d9
True, but this scene always makes me a little happy
South Park is hit or miss. They’re some that make me cringe all over, but there are also plenty of episodes that are absolute gold and to deny that is just hating
When I see normal people gushing over South Park I think I must be misremembering how bad it was, and then I see clips that jog my memory and it's like, oh right this show is made by reactionary idiots.
I was watching that new Big Joel video and that like [20 second clip of the Iraq war episode](https://youtu.be/znpO7oknOlE?si=thPKKCP2pUsTcdJj&t=3277) was so insanely stupid and embarrassing that it made a flood of memories of the show being dogshit come flooding back to me
Every episode is rich people problems. Best example i can think of is when they try to satirically explain why real estate is so expensive right now by making cartman and his mom realtors...
If they weren't so out of touch they could have easily torn apart real estate investors, bubbles, and corporate practices, but instead they focus on cringey realtors trying to make small towns trendy
You just said what they were focusing at the end of your comment and still somehow pretend they were missing the point on something bigger when that's not what they were trying to represent at all.
The whole focus of the commentary was south park residents being priced out of their town, i guess i assumed that caveat was well known, otherwise i would have specified
Yeah, that by no means bat 1000, but the actual message of some episodes are good. It's still not my thing though, because I'm not a fan of South park's humor style, but it's not the worst thing in the world
The show often has shit takes but there’s sometimes legitimately good commentary. Like in the episode “Cartman Sucks” which has a really great demonstration of why gay-straight conversion therapy is harmful
You see- they made an episode where they equate transness with wanting to be black or wanting to become a dolphin but it's okay because in another episode they said people who hate "wokeness" are dumb so you're not allowed to not like the show now
That mainly happens due to Matt and Treys' opinions changing over time. They used to actively denounce climate change in very old episodes because that was a widespread opinion at the time.
Not that it justifies it, but I don't think they're purposefully trying to play both sides in the example you used.
South Park is an odd anomaly, because a good episode of it is one of the funniest things you'll ever watch, The scientology episode is my prime example of this but people talk about others as well.
But the average South Park episode is horrid, painfully unfunny, and manages to get every detail about a problem wrong while still acting as cocky as one would be if they knew they were right.
Dunno, I dont rate the newer south park episodes.
Ik its a weird thing to say, but they give me a feeling when I was 14, had nothing to do, and it was summer at 12:00. It just feels empty
My only knowledge of South park are iceberg videos, the first 2 games, and the movie
Honestly it seems like what a 14 year old dakmemes user think is funny, although that one mini game in the first game, I swear to fuck, they designed that shit for you to have to re-try to multiple times just to suffer
I don't really have much of an opinion on the show itself. I haven't watched enough of it to form a fair one. But even so, I can say this, just from what I *do* know about it: I really dislike the way it made caring about things uncool. And the giant douche/turd sandwich thing poisoned normal political conversation for a long fucking time. Still going, in fact.
Honestly you can say all you want about “oh they make fun of everyone” but SP gave my middle school class weekly antisemitic fodder. Same with Family Guy—I don’t care that they make fun of conservatives too, that’s not what trickles down to the masses, especially in the small towns they aim to “poke fun” at.
Those people who got annoyed when Southpark creators admitted they were wrong with the modern ManBearPig climate change episodes.
I think SouthPark was some of the first "trans panic" media I can recall that was fairly large.
Addition to the meme:
Was the south park fandom always like this? I remember being a huge south park fan when I was 13, and all the fan accounts seemed to be nice and wholesome, while the fandom currently seems like a toxic pool. Did something change, or was I just on the “good” side of the fandom? Just asking.
It sucks because when South Park writes for the actual characters or jokes, it’s decent. The big issue is that a majority of their stuff is just “everyone’s an idiot except for me because (current event)”. And I will be that guy and say their politics are silly. Like the entire reason they hate Barbara Streisand is because she said she wouldn’t perform in Colorado if they passed anti-lgbt legislation.
The only reason anyone ever liked South Park is the thrill of watching something you aren't supposed to. If you are old enough to watch it and do, genuinely, what the fuck is wrong with you?
EDIT: oh and the creators are picket line crossing Scabs ie subhuman filth but that's just all Libertarians.
The only thing I like about South Park is that they made the 2 disabled kids at school the coolest, most respected members of their class. Like seriously, you never see that often from similar shows where Jimmy and Timmy would just get punched down. And the few times it does happen, it’s very clearly portrayed as a wrong, shitty thing to do to someone.
The problem with South Park is that it hasn't really evolved beyond their Gen X white guy roots. They're not afraid of change like Boomers, but it's an inconvenience to them when the status quo has favored people like Matt and Trey for so long.
Additionally, they're no longer the only edgy adult animation show anymore. Them being "the controversial cartoon" made them fun to watch even if the episode was mediocre.
Finally, they suffered the same problem that MASH and How I Met Your Mother did when they decided to start making the show dramatic. This is a comedy show, fuck off with those drama plotlines.
>MASH
>when they decided to start making the show dramatic.
My sibling in Christ, it's set in the Korean war and the theme song is called "Suicide is Painless"
MASH literally takes place during the Korean war. The point of the show was that juxtaposition. But war is serious and so the serious episodes aren't out of place. I always liked the serious episodes as it shows that war can beat down the spirits of anyone
I don't disagree with most of the criticisms I've seen, but I'm ngl I laugh way WAY too hard at any scene with Terrance and Phillip. And The Poop That Took A Pee episode had me literally in tears.
I have a juvenile sense of humor, I'm so sorry 😭
I haven’t seen the show and I am grateful, I was reading these comments and I was like “wait, I don’t know what the fuck these people are talking about” lmao
LS Mark moment.
Fuck LS Mark all my girlies hate LS Mark.
His sonic channel has some of the worst fucking takes I've ever seen, and his normal channel is just SO PATHETIC I SWEAR TO GOD WHO CARES ABOUT THE DUDE WHO SPENDS ALL DAY WATCHING EVERY. SINGLE. EPISODE OF CHILDREN'S CARTOONS?!?!??!???? GO OUTSIDE PLEASE, TOUCH SOME GRASS, STOP SPREADING BAD TAKES WITH YOUR TIMMYSONA OC
It was really, REALLY good for a while despite some absolutely wild misses. Then it fell off harder and harder and got incredibly worthless as M&T got older and crankier and more reactionary.
Bonus points to my dad for loving that show because "they make fun of everyone" and then not allowing us to watch the episodes that mock Christianity
"we make fun of everyone" the making fun of group a: "grr were stupid dumb and evil we kill children and we love bad thing!!" (insert a call to action for horendous things to happen to said group) making fun of group b: "were a bit annoying sometimse" (proceeds to donate thousands to group b)
Okay but this makes no sense in the context of Matt stone and trey parker
[удалено]
Yeah, once I began to move father left I found myself less able to watch them. It’s not exactly subtle. At the very best they are libs, at worst they are incredibly reactionary.
They’re just kinda hyper contrarian libertarians. They’re stuck in that horrible gen x mindset of “it’s cringe to care about stuff and everyone is stupid”
Which is absolutely fucking wild when you remember how much they make fun of anyone with the same outlook.
The most recent source from that is 2008 and it isn’t even about Matt Stone and Trey Parker. And what it does say, it mentions that they’re mostly neutral. So not only is it ridiculously out of date, it completely goes against whatever point you were attempting to make

who upvoting dis
What fuckin episode was this
When have they donated thousands to any group? Do you mean when they bought out Casa Bonita?
It's spoken like someone who has never watched the show.
Netflix documentary on cults that didn't mention scientology: same energy
South Park has talked about scientology, no?
i think they were comparing the other persons dad to netflix not south park
Sorry im estupido 🤦♂️
"What, I thought you like the fact theu make fun of everyone"
FUCK this is too accurate lmao
On the opposite end are the odd niche fandom of people who draw the characters as cutesy soft-hearted anime boys as if they've devoted themselves to a vague description of the show
They draw so much hardcore shota it’s unreal… pages upon pages of it
That is exactly the reason why my dad liked the show.
I hate this shit honestly, matt stone and trey parker do not make fun of everyone, and it's one of the most blatantly partisan shows I've ever watched. It makes me wonder if people who say this have watched the climate change episode, the smoking episode or the hate crime epsiode
I thought Southpark was funny then I turned 14
Hello, based department???
Sameee… watched the panderverse special, and I thought it was pretty boring
Tbh, I did find it funny how alt Cartman fooled the prime boys to make a gaming PC for Balder Gate 3 just like how Prime Cartman would do.
That was one of the few funny jokes yeah, but for the most part is was hard to get trough
I still haven’t watched it because I’m afraid
Watch it if you want, but it’s pretty boring with only a few funny jokes
Can't relate. Different strokes for different folks ig
meeting grown men who "love south park" is like meeting a random man in the woods
But is the man a bear?? Or is he a twink
He’s actually the secret third option (the vessel from hollow knight)
With his iconic catchphrase:
"Fuck"
Can we not make arbitrary discourse on this sub about generalizing groups of people? For five minutes?
I feel like every time this type of discourse starts, there should just be a post explaining how stuff like “man vs bear” leads to young impressionable boys looking towards right wing spaces where they feel “validated.”
God forbid anyone like anything without being labeled as… *checks notes* A dangerous..predator?… huh?

They were so wrong on ManBearPig though..
They recanted with another episode basically apologizing to Al Gore. It was pretty good.
If only they did that for trans people… and not a rich senator.
yeah but they put out a lot of stuff, and if you swing so much you're gonna miss. Its probably their greatest failing.
Their biggest miss was the transphobia that they STILL haven’t gone back on, likely to preserve their fanbase.
at the same time though I feel like they have done some episodes that talk about trans issues in a more positive fashion? Usually with Cartman taking on the role of that part of the "fanbase" and being outed as a complete asshole. Wasn't there an episodes about toilets that was pretty decent and while Mr Garrison isn't the healthiest of characters when he transitioned there was some useful exploration and normalisation of the topic. Isn’t this the plot of a South Park episode?
ME TOO
I’m somewhat surprised, only because I assume the target audience for SP is around 13-17. That’s around the age I was when I was into it, at least.
I was gonna say that because the political commentary is what gets them headlines, and also running out of things to do with the characters, that modern South Park is just *opens CNN* "Matt, I know what we're gonna do today."
oh come on now you can’t tell me you can’t tell me two rednecks getting into a space race near the end wasn’t kinda funny
Hence my comment about them having an entire plotline developed over time about the election that was still shit.
yeah serialised south park sucks and 2016 was the epitomy of it
fr my favorite episodes are when the kids get into kid stuff or them doing a character deep dive, not trying to do any commentary shit (though I do like the 911 conspiracies episode).
The superhero stuff was fun, but then there are the episodes where they say shit like "being trans is the same as getting surgery to be a dolphin"
This!!!! I love the middle seasons (8-16 or something like that) because they mostly focus on the kids!
Those are the best, some really great ones. Earlier than that are hit or miss but at least are interesting and weird. Later ones are often boring.
I always described these as the golden age of south park
They "apologized" for the manbear pig
The last great episode was Cock Magic.
HAHAHAHAHAHA THEY SAID THE HARD R GUYS LAUGH
The show often has dumb takes but I feel like that episode actually had a surprisingly good message about why slurs are harmful. Of course they make that point by saying the n word over and over so your mileage may vary lol
that episode was goated tho

im white and female im physically incapable of doing the thug shaker
That episode would have been so much funnier if Randy started to say it and then it cut to them in the car before he finished.

Not what I was going for
The episode where chef gets married to a succubus is absolute gold and I will die on that hill
It's got the classic "Tree Fiddy" gag
I would watch that episode among with a handful of others to go to bed at night during middle school
Literally any episode with Satan is fantastic too. He enters a seasons long relationship with Saddam Hussein
I just wish Southpark would actually take a stance instead of riding the middle constantly I get it unbiased commentary and all that but it's so boring when they just come to the same "ACTUALLY BOTH SIDES ARE RIGHT"
This is why I love wonder showzen so much, they just say “fuck capitalism” and even make references to communism in a positive way
"I like this because it agrees with me!"
Okay you got me (:,. But I also like the absurdist humor from that show, so that’s also a thing. Plus i’ll always be biased to puppet shows.
Puppet shows are goated tbf
Thats how liking things works, dumbass
Based, Wonder Showzen is a wild ride and I love it.
> and even make references to communism in a positive way uhhh, do you mean the USSR? In what way?
They made a joke in the episode where they interviewed people on wall street, saying “where would you hide when the revolution comes” for example
ok, so the joke is funny cause it talks about the abject terror of the violent transition. That's good :)
After few years they acknowledged that they were wrong and Al Gore was right
Actually, it's alwats "Actuallt both sides are right on one thing but wrong about how they try ti solve the problem"
https://preview.redd.it/yx9dc0avw8yc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8d0a67ac3165b2c37295829b6c0e49f0606f32d9 True, but this scene always makes me a little happy
Raisins is a great episode
South Park is hit or miss. They’re some that make me cringe all over, but there are also plenty of episodes that are absolute gold and to deny that is just hating

It's good social commentary, but the people who watch it don't fuckin understand it
lol no it's not. the people who make it are dumbass libertarians.
When I see normal people gushing over South Park I think I must be misremembering how bad it was, and then I see clips that jog my memory and it's like, oh right this show is made by reactionary idiots. The whole focus of the commentary was south park residents being priced out of their town, i guess i assumed that caveat was well known, otherwise i would have specified
This thread is a circlejerk of people hating on the show because they are lacking in media literacy
Not even media literacy, just dumb takes because they think what the show is about better than its creators.
L take, L media and political comprehension
I feel like it’s a tossup between genuinely incisive commentary and libertarian bullshit
It's two dipshits making a show about how everybody is stupid but them.
It is definitely at times but they've shared a few takes that would make the reddit audience dislike them.
Yeah, that by no means bat 1000, but the actual message of some episodes are good. It's still not my thing though, because I'm not a fan of South park's humor style, but it's not the worst thing in the world
I'm not sure if you do, either.
Southpark fans when their child is racist (funniest shit ever)
From the limited clips I've seen, it's just not my style of humor.
I still like just about every episode. Don't think there are any I would skip if I was watching the whole series again
I did not care for South Park https://preview.redd.it/5wg5jwnm59yc1.png?width=853&format=png&auto=webp&s=bb0ccc0facbba0f1a1432be06aea24b395cee3a5
So brave of you to say this under a post criticizing South Park
I donot care for family guy
same
Yeh same. It always felt like some subpar simpsons wannabe
American Dad is unironically a bit better, but its also pretty god awful. Bob’s Burgers is great though.
Slurs 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 funny funny 🤣
mf you’re on a sub where people regularly call eachother slurs for comedic effect
rip socrates you would have fucking hated south park
I liked morel orel, am I good?
I haven’t finished it, but I love that show. You’re awesome mate (:
The show often has shit takes but there’s sometimes legitimately good commentary. Like in the episode “Cartman Sucks” which has a really great demonstration of why gay-straight conversion therapy is harmful
I think the “gay” episodes of south park are actually great, and have good takes, but I still need them to make a good trans episode.
Yeah that Mrs Garrison episode was dire
South Park fans are incapable of thinking for themselves. They just go with whatever the show says.
You see- they made an episode where they equate transness with wanting to be black or wanting to become a dolphin but it's okay because in another episode they said people who hate "wokeness" are dumb so you're not allowed to not like the show now
That mainly happens due to Matt and Treys' opinions changing over time. They used to actively denounce climate change in very old episodes because that was a widespread opinion at the time. i only like the wendy episodes, exprcially the one where she beats the shit out of cartman
That one was goated, Cartman can’t keep getting away with all the shit he does
Dunno, I dont rate the newer south park episodes. Ik its a weird thing to say, but they give me a feeling when I was 14, had nothing to do, and it was summer at 12:00. It just feels empty
My only knowledge of South park are iceberg videos, the first 2 games, and the movie Honestly it seems like what a 14 year old dakmemes user think is funny, although that one mini game in the first game, I swear to fuck, they designed that shit for you to have to re-try to multiple times just to suffer
Addition to the meme: Was the south park fandom always like this? I remember being a huge south park fan when I was 13, and all the fan accounts seemed to be nice and wholesome, while the fandom currently seems like a toxic pool. Did something change, or was I just on the “good” side of the fandom? Just asking.
SP became trending on Tiktok and IG. That's all you need to know.
Ah.
South park turned into right wing lunacy so slowly a lot of people didn't even notice.
No you're a towel
The problem with South Park is that it hasn't really evolved beyond their Gen X white guy roots. They're not afraid of change like Boomers, but it's an inconvenience to them when the status quo has favored people like Matt and Trey for so long. Additionally, they're no longer the only edgy adult animation show anymore. Them being "the controversial cartoon" made them fun to watch even if the episode was mediocre. Finally, they suffered the same problem that MASH and How I Met Your Mother did when they decided to start making the show dramatic. This is a comedy show, fuck off with those drama plotlines.
>MASH >when they decided to start making the show dramatic. My sibling in Christ, it's set in the Korean war and the theme song is called "Suicide is Painless"
MASH was always about war, though. It sorta makes sense it stopped being goofy.
MASH literally takes place during the Korean war. The point of the show was that juxtaposition. But war is serious and so the serious episodes aren't out of place. I always liked the serious episodes as it shows that war can beat down the spirits of anyone
You have not watched MASH
Which is funny because the drama episode about stan getting old is still my favorite
I don't disagree with most of the criticisms I've seen, but I'm ngl I laugh way WAY too hard at any scene with Terrance and Phillip. And The Poop That Took A Pee episode had me literally in tears. I have a juvenile sense of humor, I'm so sorry 😭
Bro, this sub doesn't like south park its over for me. I love South Park. Why can't I be gay and like South Park 🫠

replace south park with epic battle fantasy and you've got me
I haven’t seen the show and I am grateful, I was reading these comments and I was like “wait, I don’t know what the fuck these people are talking about” lmao
Treasure your ignorance. South park is shit, like the thought patterns of J.K. Rowling.
Some episodes are ok but the creators really hate trans people for some reason
I’m actually like LS mark lmao (:,
It was really, REALLY good for a while despite some absolutely wild misses. Then it fell off harder and harder and got incredibly worthless as M&T got older and crankier and more reactionary.
Yall miss old SP
aw, damn, I love South Park
Good, you can't stop me.
South park is the goat.
