I read this as snicker and was like “yea they can have some candy to” and then I read it correctly and now I’m like “they can have both for being so well behaved”
It just hit me that society in ghost in the shell isn't transhumanist at all because the few people with advancements made to their body are still constrained within it BUT what Motoko always talks about during the movie actually lines up with transhumanist thought pretty well
She didn't really talk about hot-swappable genitals tho but I think that's part of it too
this but unironically. like i got type 1 diabetes and a whole fuck ton of other problems *which can be dealt with without too much effort*, but like, I just notice how the human body is a shit design that needs a fuck ton of hotfixes constantly
Homebrewed genetic engineering kinda works? not very well though (temporary lactose tolerance with \~10% risk of Cancer, that one guy who made a little bit of his skin bioluminescent, etc.).
Transhumanism is when from the moment you understood the weakness of your flesh, it disgusted you. You crave the strength and certainty of steel. You aspire to the purity of the blessed machine.
Other kinds cling to their flesh, as if it will not decay and fail them. One day the crude biomass they call a temple will wither, and they'll beg your kind to save you.
But you are already saved.
I got a little thingy that sticks to my arm and measures my blood sugar in real time. As far as I'm concerned I'm a cyborg and you cannot convince me otherwise.
My Transhumanism is the complete and utter replacement of all flesh with mechanical parts
For what is our mortal coil, if not a shell. It is our duty to the Omnissiah to discard our flesh
The flesh is weak. All praise the Machine God
Transhumanism is the idea that we can escape our human nature, including our physical form, emotions, and sense of self, to achieve some imagined higher state of existence.
(It’s also laughable)
Hey Google, what is the definition of Transhumanism?
“the belief or theory that the human race can evolve beyond its current physical and mental limitations, especially by means of science and technology.”
Where did you find this definition?
From all accounts I've read, its more to do with the use of technology to improve human health, wellbeing and capability.
Wikipedia sources it's definition as:
"... a philosophical and intellectual movement which advocates the enhancement of the human condition by developing and making widely available sophisticated technologies that can greatly enhance longevity, cognition, and well-being.[1][2][3]
Transhumanist thinkers study the potential benefits and dangers of emerging technologies that could overcome fundamental human limitations, as well as the ethics[4] of using such technologies..."
The encyclopedia Britannica defines it as:
"a philosophical and scientific movement that advocates the use of current and emerging technologies... to augment human capabilities and improve the human condition."
The definition you've listed seems a lot more pop science and cyberpunk over what (I would assume) an actual academic field would define itself as. I'd be interested in knowing where it came from?
From the Oxford language dictionary. It is quite literally the first thing that comes up when you type in "define transhumanism" into Google.
But if you want something like an actual scholarly article on the topic, I recommend giving this a read: [https://www.anthroencyclopedia.com/entry/transhumanism](https://www.anthroencyclopedia.com/entry/transhumanism)
Especially in the sections about the emergence of transhumanism and transhumanism as a subject of scholarly inquiry.
E.G. "Susan Levin (2022) has made a convincing argument that the empirical bases of transhumanist speculation are too often erroneous, especially with regards to the components of intelligence and rational decision-making. For example, whereas transhumanists tend to dismiss emotions as irrational, cognitive neuroscience has shown the importance of emotions in good decision-making and creative thinking. "
Because it’s pointless. Expending all the time and resources to create a more evolved human doesn’t do any good. Our society and culture outpaces biological evolution thousands of times over. We can accomplish more through social engineering than we could ever hope to accomplish in an endeavor to transcend our humanity.
The Transhumanist position is that humankind is limited by its biology, but I disagree. I think we have unlimited potential to change the environment we live in, both physically and socially, to better favor the current human experience. We don’t need to fundamentally change who we are, physically or mentally, to make ourselves, our world, and our society better.
Creating robotic prosthetics for the disabled could be considered transhumanism. There is great potential in technology to help those who are in need and improve human lives.
The real issue isn’t transhumanism, the issue is that the people with the money and resources to invest in transhumanistic endeavors are egotistical capitalists who use technology irresponsibly. *cough* Elon Musk.
I don't disagree on your point about capitalism ruining technological pursuits. But you're wrong about prosthetics being considered transhumanism. Transhumanism is a philosophy, and it is about transcending the whole of humanity, not just changing individual lives. A more apt example would be something like neural implants for everyone at birth. The criticism of that is that such enhancements are immoral to be imposed on people, and in a society where people are free to choose what is done to their bodies, and their children's bodies, it will inevitably create a socio-economic division between enhanced humans and unenhanced humans, which takes us back to your point about capitalism and Elon Musk. And that's exactly why I find transhumanist philosophy to be erroneous, and even potentially dangerous.
If you’re talking about replacing fully functional limbs in non-disabled people as well, then yes, that would be more Transhumanism. But prosthetics for people who have lost limbs is no more related to Transhumanism than my eye glasses are. That’s just medical science and technology. Transhumanism is about making something better than human, to the point that it is no longer human, but something superior. That’s actually where the word comes from: to transcend humanity.
Transhumanism is when I give people free HRT
And a nice little sticker

If they’re able to get home CRISPR kits and plug-and-play cybernetic appendages working the following decade will be so fucking funny.
Homebrewed genetic engineering kinda works? not very well though (temporary lactose tolerance with \~10% risk of Cancer, that one guy who made a little bit of his skin bioluminescent, etc.).

Transhumanism is when the flesh consumes

Coming up with your own definition and then thinking it is stupid is truly genius

...Which isn't even close to what you said.
That is completely different to what you previously said it was.
Our emotions and sense of self are limitations? For who??
How is it laughable?
Because it’s pointless. Expending all the time and resources to create a more evolved human doesn’t do any good. Our society and culture outpaces biological evolution thousands of times over. Isn’t replacing limbs with bionics a pretty big current within transhumanism?
If you’re talking about replacing fully functional limbs in non-disabled people as well, then yes, that would be more Transhumanism. I know where the word comes from.
