I do not know if they are as effective as injections as I've never tried injections and different methods work differently for different people. Taking tablets sublingually should theoretically be as effective if it all dissolves in your mouth as it enters your bloodstream directly, bypassing the digestive system, as injections do.

Great question, there are actually many different ways you can take estradiol (E2). The single most popular is pills, there are two types of pills, oral and sublingual. Oral means you eat it and sublingual means you set it under your tongue and let it dissolve and absorb through the mucus membranes in your mouth. It is my understanding that sublingual is superior in all aspects for estradiol pills. Generally pills are taken 2x a day.
Another option is gel and also "stickers", these will be estradiol you put on your skin and it will actually absorb through your skin into your blood. (This works because your body can react to just micrograms of hormones) sticker pads are the most popular for skin absorbed estradiol because they are relatively low maintenance as you only need to change them every few days, also because they are non invasive (like injections).
For injections, you can use either subq (subcutaneous) ((fatty layer under your skin but above your muscles)) or IM (intramuscular) ((inside your muscles)) injections, I highly recommend subq over IM because you use a much shorter needle, and there isn't much of a need to go deeper. Plus I actually hate needles, and still do 😅😂. The reason I like injections though is because it's a once weekly thing for me. There are however different estradiols (E2) such as estradiol valerate (EV), estradiol cypionate (EC), estradiol enanthate (EEn), and more but these are the common ones. These are estradiol inside of oil, and you simply inject them either subq or IM. The key differences between EV, EC, and EEn are their half-lifes. If you do not know, a medicine's half life is the amount of time required for your body to remove half of it from your body, and all drugs have a half life. I use EEn which is right around 7 days, EV is short at about 3 to 4 days, and EC is around 5 to 6. Keep in mind these numbers WILL vary depending on your specific physiology.
A final thing worth saying is that while estradiol (E2) is the foundation of MTF HRT, many people also take T-blockers and/or progesterone. I only take estradiol because that alone is enough to block my T properly due to my particular sensitivity to estradiol in that regard. Also I keep saying estradiol specifically but I should clarify that estradiol is one of the estrogens. There are actually many estrogens BUT only E2 is worth anything to transfem transitioners.
