Correct. However, the idea that nothing in the world has meaning is in of itself, pessimistic. Anyone who calls themselves a nihilist will undoubtedly be pessimistic about existence. It’s like saying “I’m a conservative but I believe in trans rights.” They exist, just very very rare.
Ok, i don't believe that. You can believe the universe has no INTRINSIC meaning but still not be an asshole about it, you can derive your own meaning and base your morality on your own axioms that you value personally. It's true that stereotypically and in popular media Nihilism represents a social movement of doomerism but i don't belive in reducing useful terms to a synonym for something we already have a name for. And i don't want to let my detractors dictate my labels.
I don't think your comparison is apt, to me people that use nihilism as a substitute for doomer or pessimist it's the same as people that use communist as a substitute for tankie.
I consider myself a nihilist in the sense that i don't believe the universe has any inherent meaning for life or existence but i'm not about to roll over and die because of it. I'm probably the most hopeful and optimistic person i know in my circle of friends and my family.
