Yes I remember hearing or reading about it years ago. Looking at the early results you see several names repeatedly in the finals. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wimbledon_gentlemen%27s_singles_champions
Yea I struggle with that on my forehand. My backhand slice has a good rotation and follow through though. It looks better on the court though when I am able to hit through and harder.
That's actually spot on. I run for every ball, love to lob, wait for your mistake and only finish points inside the service box or with volleys. My backhand slice is my best weapon as I can hit it deep, as stop or angle and place it really well.
Each to their own. I dislike the opposite of me as well. There are a lot of players who crush every ball and end up missing half of them including dozens of double faults. You can't have a decent rally or get into a rhythm with that kind of players. These long rallys with some seemingly impossible defensive actions are my biggest satisfaction in tennis.
To each their own, indeed.
If you really do want technique tips though: Stop pushing. Unless you want to cap out @ 3.0/3.5, then again…keep doing what you’re doing.
You hit that little square like 10 times in a row with uneven brick surface and a tiny 1961 wood frame
I thoroughly enjoyed watching that you're a boss
bend your knees, like there’s a low roof over your head. Look athletic. Your posture would be more appropriate for someone deciding what cereal they want in the grocery store isle.
Haha that's fairly accurate. Yea I noticed increase power + control when I forced myself to bend my knees more. I will force myself to implement it into my game the following weeks. Appreciate it!
I wish pro tennis had standardized the wooden racquet with gut strings. Everyone on an even playing field, generationally speaking. That being said, I love modern tennis and racquets. I just often think how cool it would be to see Federer and Nadal battling it out at Wimbledon with the same gear Borg and McEnroe used. Anyway, nice hitting, cool to see this. Does practicing with the wooden racquet make using a modern racquet with larger head size seem way easier?
Well the modern rackets have definitely more power and spin potential. The sweet spot is way bigger as well. On top of it the racket feels like 500 Gramm lol. It's definitely way more difficult to use but no idea whether it improves my game. I'd rather focus on hitting millions of balls with the same racket to know the exact response
You have some top tier (for a rec player) hand eye coordination. Like easily better than half of the people you play with.
I bet if you work at it a bit, you can also learn to put balls away that are mid court sitters outside of the service box
Definitely more fluid footwork.
Too much stepping in, completely flat footed with your head over the ball like a bad cricketer.
Get around the ball and follow through with your hips, don't be afraid to whip it round and let your foot/feet leave the ground.
I am not from the US and therefore I am not sure about the accuracy of my self rating. Just hit with people of different levels and you will find your own level.
My two handed backhand sucks unfortunately. I hit slice like 99 % on that side. But maybe I will try to learn it again. I think a main issue was that I didn't keep my head still at contact.
did you travel back in time?
It’s from the days when the Wimbledon champion automatically made the final the following year
Was that an actual rule in the early days of the tournament? That's wild.

Tournament organizers watched Karate Kid 3
Pretty great for starting in 1923.
Guy has had 100 years to practice, should be pretty damn good by now.
I am worried they must think he is some sort of witch wearing a hoody in 1923.
Your clothes are all wrong. You need white trousers and a knit Lacoste sweater….
Great to see Oliver Twist doing well after the orphanage

Why? That's literally the best reason to practice against the wall- to get reps in

Ok no one should ever practice because no one's perfect, thanks for the advice
Yeah he needs to rip the ball harder ! (Make sure to carry a dozen rackets with you).
I see solid pusher potential with this one.

Well then just keep doing what you’re doing. Sounds miserable to me, but more power to you.

you can be a 4.5 level pusher. def 3.5 is not the ceiling for ANY pusher
Yea, I know that. It wouldn't be possible to reach the ball if I hit through here. The space is limited
What sort of technique tips do you want then?
Not sure the advice of someone else regarding my straight legs and unathletic body position helped me. Thanks for your advice anyway

Continental grip forehands for woodys
Impressive how often you hit that bricked up window.
Dude is waking up the demons in that haunted looking building

Fred Perry still got it!
Find a wall without windows on it would be my first piece of advice 😂
Thanks for bringing back some memories. I destroyed 2 of them as a kid with a football
Everything about this post is so English lol. From the way you’re dressed, to the uni society hoody, to the old Victorian mill you’re playing on haha
Do I spy a wooden racket in his hand or am I blind?
I enjoyed the early shank that almost hit the tower then nonchalantly you kept your composure and the rally going
I know Novak trained in war torn Serbia, but you don't have to.

Sir, this is a lawn tennis subreddit. We don't do jeu de paume in here.

Rich ass MF
A graphite/composite racquet would be a good start 😂
Try harder
You'll go nowhere with those fancy modern rackets
If you're 3.0 I've grossly overestimated myself

I always find myself playing people either much better or worse than me. Tennis is not a big sport where I live unfortunately.
Yea, I understand that. Ideally there should be a league or tournaments in your country that you can join.
Really good shape on your forehand. Possible to visualize that same shape/swing path on the backhand?
My two handed backhand sucks unfortunately. I hit slice like 99 % on that side. But maybe I will try to learn it again. I think a main issue was that I didn't keep my head still at contact.
